ਆਦਿਪੁਰਖਆਦੇਸੁਆਦਿਵਖਾਣਿਆ।
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ' (ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਯਾ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ) ਨੂੰ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਹੋਵੇ ਜੋ (ਸਰਬ ਦਾ) ਆਦਿ ਕਾਰਣ ਵਖਾਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
I bow before the primeval Lord who has been told as the primordial cause of all.
ਸੋਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸਚਾਵੇਸੁਸਬਦਿਸਿਞਾਣਿਆ।
ਓਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੱਚੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ (ਜਿਸ ਨੇ) ਸਬਦ (ਦੁਆਰਾ) ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਹੈ।
Truth incarnate that true Guru is realised through the Word.
ਸਬਦਿਸੁਰਤਿਉਪਦੇਸੁਸਚਿਸਮਾਣਿਆ।
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ) ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨਾਲ (ਜਗ੍ਯਾਸੂਆਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸਚ ਸਮਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
Only they have realised Him whose surati (consciousness) has merged into the truth after accepting the commands of the Word.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਸਚੁਦੇਸੁਘਰੁਪਰਵਾਣਿਆ।
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਸਚਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਹੈ, (ਓਹੀ) ਘਰ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣੀਕ ਹੈ;
Holy congregation is the genuine basis and authentic abode of truth.
ਪ੍ਰੇਮਭਗਤਿਆਵੇਸਸਹਜਿਸੁਖਾਣਿਆ।
(ਜਿੱਥੇ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਹੈ, ਅਰ ਸਹਿਜ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੈ।
Wherein the individual inspired by loving devotion enjoys the innate delight.
ਭਗਤਿਵਛਲੁਪਰਵੇਸੁਮਾਣੁਨਿਮਾਣਿਆ।
ਭਗਤ ਵਛਲ (ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ) ਪਰਵੇਸ਼ (=ਸਮਾਵਣਾ) ਹੈ (ਓਹ) ਨਿਮਾਣਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਣ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਜਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ)।
Lord, kind to the devotees and the glory of the poor, also assimilates Himself in the holy congregation.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਬਿਸਨੁਮਹੇਸੁਅੰਤੁਨਜਾਣਿਆ।
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ, ਬਿਸ਼ਨੁ, ਸ਼ਿਵ ਨੇ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਇਆ।
Even Brahma, Visnu, Mahesa could not know His mysteries.
ਸਿਮਰਿਸਹਿਸਫਣਸੇਸੁਤਿਲੁਨਪਛਾਣਿਆ।
ਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਨਾਗ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਫਨਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ (ਰੋਜ਼) ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰ ਤਿਲ ਮਾਤ੍ਰ (ਅੰਤ) ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।
Sesanag remembering Him with its thousand hoods could not understand Him.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਦਰਦਰਵੇਸੁਸਚੁਸੁਹਾਣਿਆ।੧।
(੯) (ਜੋ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ 'ਦਰ' (ਸਤਿਸੰਗ) ਦੇ ਦਰਵੇਸ਼ ਹੋਏ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਸੱਚ) ਸੁਹਣਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੈ।
The truth is pleasing to those gurmukhs who have become dervish at the door of holy congregation.
ਗੁਰੁਚੇਲੇਰਹਰਾਸਿਅਲਖੁਅਭੇਉਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਚੇਲੇ ਦੀ (ਏਕਤਾ ਅਥਵਾ) ਰਹੁਰੀਤੀ ਅਲਖ ਤੇ ਅਭੇਵ ਹੈ।
The ways of the Guru and the disciple are mysterious and imperceptible.
ਗੁਰੁਚੇਲੇਸਾਬਾਸਿਨਾਨਕਦੇਉਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਚੇਲਾ ਧੰਨ ਹਨ (ਜੋ ਇਕੋ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਉ ਦਾ ਹੀ (ਰੂਪ) ਹਨ। (ਭਾਵ ਨਾਮ ਦੋ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਰੂਪ ਇਕੋ ਹੈ)।
Guru (Nanak) and disciple (Angad) both are blest (because both have merged into each other).
ਗੁਰਮਤਿਸਹਜਿਨਿਵਾਸੁਸਿਫਤਿਸਮੇਉਹੈ।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਜੀ ਦਾ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਸਹਿਜ ਪਦ ਵਿਖੇ ਹੈ, (ਅਤੇ ਉਸੇ ਦੀ) ਸਿਫਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਮਾਏ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
Their abode is the wisdom of Guru and they both are rapt in the praises of the Lord.
ਸਬਦਿਸੁਰਤਿਪਰਗਾਸਅਛਲਅਛੇਉਹੈ।
ਸਬਦ ਦੇ ਸੁਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਗਾਸ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅਛਲ ਅਛੇਦ (ਹੋ ਗਏ) ਹਨ।
Enlightened with the Word their consciousness has become infinite and immutable.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਆਸਨਿਰਾਸਮਤਿਅਰਖੇਉਹੈ।
ਆਸਾ ਥੋਂ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਉਚੀ ਮਤ (ਵਾਲੇ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਕਲਾ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Transcending all hopes they have assimilated subtle wisdom in their person.
ਕਾਮਕਰੋਧਵਿਣਾਸੁਸਿਫਤਿਸਮੇਉਹੈ।
ਕਾਮ, ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਆਦਿ ਦਾ ਅਭਾਵ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਸਿਫਤ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Conquering the lust and anger they have absorbed themselves in the praises (of God).
ਸਤਸੰਤੋਖਉਲਾਸਸਕਤਿਨਸੇਉਹੈ।
ਸਤਿ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਹੈ (ਓਥੇ) ਨਾਂ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਸ਼ਿਵ ਹੈ।
Beyond the abodes of Siva and Sakti they have reached the abode of truth, contentment and bliss.
ਘਰਹੀਵਿਚਿਉਦਾਸੁਸਚੁਸੁਚੇਉਹੈ।
ਘਰ ਹੀ ਵਿਖੇ (ਭਾਵ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਸਥ ਵਿਖੇ) ਉਦਾਸ ਤੇ (ਮਨੋਂ ਤਨੋਂ) ਸੱਚੇ ਤੇ ਸੁੱਚੇ ਹਨ।
Being indifferent to household (pleasures) they are truth-oriented.
ਵੀਹਇਕੀਹਅਭਿਆਸਗੁਰਸਿਖਦੇਉਹੈ।੨।
(੯) ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਦਾ ਵੀਹ ਵਿਸਵੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਹੋਕੇ) ਇਕ ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਹੈ। (ਅਥਵਾ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖ ਲੇਖੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਹਨ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਬੀਸ ਤਕ ਹਿਸਾਬ ਤੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਇਕੀਹ ਹਿਸਾਬੋਂ ਪਾਰ। ਅਗਲੀ ਪੌੜੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਇਸੇ ਪੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਪੁਸ਼ਟ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਿੱਖ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤ ਦਾ ਅੱਭ੍ਯਾਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਸ
The Guru and disciple have now attain the ratio of twenty and twenty One, i.e.the disciple has gone ahead of the Guru.
ਗੁਰਚੇਲਾਪਰਵਾਣੁਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਜਾਣੀਐ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਚੇਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣੀਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਜਾਣੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
The disciple who obeys the commands of the Guru is called gurmukh.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਚੋਜਵਿਡਾਣੁਅਕਥਕਹਾਣੀਐ।
(ਉਸ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਦੇ 'ਚੋਜ' (=ਕੰਮ) ਅਚਰਜ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ, (ਉਸਦੀ) ਅਕੱਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਹੈ।
The actions of the gurmukh are awe-inspiring and their glory is indescribable.
ਕੁਦਰਤਨੋਕੁਰਬਾਣਕਾਦਰੁਜਾਣੀਐ।
ਕੁਦਰਤ' (ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾਂ) ਥੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਣ ਜਾਈਏ, (ਉਸੇ ਥੋਂ ਕਾਦਰ) ਕਰਤਾ (ਅਨੁਮਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ਦ੍ਵਾਰੇ) ਜਾਣੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
Considering creation as the form of the Creator he feels to be a sacrifice unto it.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਜਗਿਮਿਹਮਾਣੁਜਗੁਮਿਹਮਾਣੀਐ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਆਪਨੂੰ) ਜਗਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਹੁਣਾ (ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ), (ਓਹ) ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪੂਜਨੀਕ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
In the world he feels himself as a guest and the world a guest house.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਤਿਸੁਹਾਣੁਆਖਿਵਖਾਣੀਐ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚ ਸੁਹਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਏਹ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ) ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਕਹਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Truth is his real Guru whom he speaks and listens to.
ਦਰਿਢਾਢੀਦਰਵਾਣੁਚਵੈਗੁਰਬਾਣੀਐ।
(ਗੁਰਮੁਖ) ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਦਾ ਢਾਡੀ ਹੋਕੇ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
Like a bard, at the doors of the holy congregation, he recites the hymns of the Guru (gurbani).
ਅੰਤਰਿਜਾਮੀਜਾਣੁਹੇਤੁਪਛਾਣੀਐ।
(ਗੁਰਮੁਖ) ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ (ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ) ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਕੇ (ਉਸਦੇ) ਹਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
For him the holy congregation is the basis of his acquaintance with the omniscient Lord.
ਸਚੁਸਬਦੁਨੀਸਾਣੁਸੁਰਤਿਸਮਾਣੀਐ।
ਸੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਨੀਸ਼ਾਨ (ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ) ਸੁਰਤ (ਭਗਵੰਤ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ) ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
His consciousness remains absorbed in the graceful true Word.
ਇਕੋਦਰਿਦੀਬਾਣੁਸਬਦਿਸਿਞਾਣੀਐ।੩।
(੯) ਇੱਕੋ (ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਰੂਪ) ਦਰਵਾਜੇ (ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ) ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ (ਰੱਖਕੇ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੁਆਰਾ (ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨੂੰ) ਸਿਆਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
True court of justice for him is the holy congregation and through Word the true identity of it he establishes in his heart.
ਸਬਦੁਗੁਰੂਗੁਰਵਾਹੁਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸਬਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ, (ਅਤੇ) ਧੰਨ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਜਿਸਨੇ ਉਹ ਗੁਰੂ) ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
From the Guru the disciple obtains the wondrous Word
ਚੇਲਾਸੁਰਤਿਸਮਾਹੁਅਲਖੁਲਖਾਇਆ।
ਚੇਲੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਨੇ ਸਬਦ ਦੀ) ਸੁਰਤ ਵਿਖੇ (ਆਪ) ਸਮਾਇਕੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਲਖ (ਪਰਮੇਸਰ) ਲਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
And as a disciple, merging his consciousness in it, comes face to face with imperceptible Lord.
ਗੁਰਚੇਲੇਵੀਵਾਹੁਤੁਰੀਚੜਾਇਆ।
(ਜਦ) ਗੁਰੂ (ਨਾਨਕ) ਨਾਲ ਚੇਲੇ ਦਾ 'ਵੀਵਾਹ' (=ਮੇਲ) ਹੋਇਆ (ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ) ਤੁਰੀਆ ਪਦ (ਦੀ ਘੋੜੀ ਪੁਰ) ਚੜ੍ਹਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
Meeting the Guru, the disciple attains turia, the fourth and final stage of spiritual quietude.
ਗਹਰਗੰਭੀਰਅਥਾਹੁਅਜਰੁਜਰਾਇਆ।
(ਫਲ) ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਅਥਾਹ ਹੋਕੇ ਅਜਰ (ਨਾ ਜਰੇ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਜਰ ਲੀਤੇ।
He holds unfathomable and serene Lord dearly in his heart.
ਸਚਾਬੇਪਰਵਾਹੁਸਚਿਸਮਾਇਆ।
ਸੱਚਾ ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹ (ਹੋਕੇ) ਸੱਚ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਮਾ ਗਏ।
Becoming carefree that true disciple merges himself in the truth.
ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਾਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁਹੁਕਮੁਚਲਾਇਆ।
ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ (ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿਕਾਂ ਪਰ) ਹੁਕਮ ਚੱਲਣ ਲਗ ਪਿਆ ਹੈ।
And by becoming the king of kings he makes others subservient to him.
ਲਉਬਾਲੀਦਰਗਾਹੁਭਾਣਾਭਾਇਆ।
ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹ' (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਦਰਗਾਹ ਦਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਾ।
Only he loves the divine will of the Lord.
ਸਚੀਸਿਫਤਿਸਲਾਹੁਅਪਿਓਪੀਆਇਆ।
ਸੱਚੀ ਸਿਫਤ ਦੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਦਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ (ਆਪ ਪੀਤਾ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪਿਆਇਆ।
And only he has tasted the nectar in the form of praises of the Lord.
ਸਬਦੁਸੁਰਤਿਅਸਗਾਹਅਘੜਘੜਾਇਆ।੪।
(੯) ਸਬਦ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ (ਅਸਗਾਹ-) ਬਾਹਲੀ ਦੇਕੇ, (ਕਈ ਅਘੜਾਂ) ਮੂਰਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਘੜਾਇਆ-) ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
Taking consciousness into the depth of Word he has shaped the unchiselled mind.
ਮੁਲਨਮਿਲੈਅਮੋਲੁਨਕੀਮਤਿਪਾਈਐ।
(ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਪੰਥ) ਅਮਲੋਕ ਹੈ, ਮੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ, ਨਾ (ਇਸ ਦੀ) ਕੀਮਤ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
The way of life of gurmukhs is invaluable;
ਪਾਇਤਰਾਜੂਤੋਲੁਨਅਤੁਲੁਤੁਲਾਈਐ।
ਤੱਕੜੀ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਟੇ ਪਾਕੇ ਨਾ ਤੋਲੀ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਵਸਤੂ ਤੁਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੀ।
It cannot be purchased; on weighing scale it cannot be weighed.
ਨਿਜਘਰਿਤਖਤੁਅਡੋਲੁਨਡੋਲਿਡੋਲਾਈਐ।
ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਤਖਤ ਪਰ ਅਡੋਲ ਰਹਿਕੇ ਡੋਲਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਡੋਲਦਾ।
Stabilizing in one’s own self and not getting frivolous in his way of life.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪੰਥੁਨਿਰੋਲੁਨਰਲੇਰਲਾਈਐ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਪੰਥ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੈ (ਕਿਸੇ ਨਾਲ) ਰਲਾਓ ਤਾਂ ਰਲਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
This way is distinct and does not become defiled even when joined with some one else.
ਕਥਾਅਕਥਅਬੋਲੁਨਬੋਲਬੁਲਾਈਐ।
ਇਸਦੀ ਕਥਾ ਕਥੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ, ਨਾ ਬੋਲੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਇਸਦਾ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਏ।
Its story is indescribable.
ਸਦਾਅਭੁਲੁਅਭੋਲਿਨਭੋਲਿਭੁਲਾਈਐ।
(ਇਹ) ਸਦਾ ਭੁੱਲ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ ਹੈ, ਦਾਨਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਗ਼ਲਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਭੁੱਲਦਾ।
This way transcends all ommissions and all anxieties.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪੰਥੁਅਲੋਲੁਸਹਜਿਸਮਾਈਐ।
(ਏਹ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਪੰਥ ਸਥਿਰ ਹੈ, (ਇਸਦੀ ਸੱਤਾ) ਸਹਿਜ ਪਦ ਵਿਚ ਹੈ।
Absorbed in equipoise this gurmukh-way of life gives balance to life.
ਅਮਿਓਸਰੋਵਰਝੋਲੁਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪਾਈਐ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਤ ਦੇ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਨੂੰ ਝੋਲ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਇਹ ਸਹਿਜ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ) ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The gurmukh quaffs from the tank of nectar.
ਲਖਟੋਲੀਇਕਟੋਲੁਨਆਪੁਗਣਾਈਐ।੫।
(੯) (ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਾਸ) ਲੱਖਾਂ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਇਕ ਪਦਾਰਥ (ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਆਪਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਣਾਉਂਦੇ।
The end result of lacs of experiences is the gurmukh never exhibits his ego.
ਸਉਦਾਇਕਤੁਹਟਿਸਬਦਿਵਿਸਾਹੀਐ।
ਸਬਦ ਦੁਆਰਾ (ਨਾਮ ਦਾ) ਸਉਦਾ ਇਕ (ਸਤਿਸੰਗ ਦੀ) ਹੱਟੀ ਤੋਂ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
From the shop of holy congregation, through the Word, the merchandise of God’s name is procured.
ਪੂਰਾਪੂਰੇਵਟਿਕਿਆਖਿਸਲਾਹੀਐ।
ਪੂਰੇ (ਸੰਤਾਂ) ਦਾ (ਵਿਚਾਰ ਰੂਪ) ਵੱਟ ਪੂਰਾ ਹੈ, ਕੀ ਕਹਿਕੇ ਸਲਾਹੀਏ।
How to praise Him? The measuring criteria of the perfect Lord are perfect.
ਕਦੇਨਹੋਵੈਘਟਿਸਚੀਪਤਿਸਾਹੀਐ।
ਕਦੇ ਬੀ ਘੱਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਊ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਸੱਚੇ ਦੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਦਾ ਹੈ।
The warehouse of the True King is never deficient.
ਪੂਰੇਸਤਿਗੁਰਖਟਿਅਖੁਟੁਸਮਾਹੀਐ।
ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ (ਨਾਲ ਜੋ ਮਿਲਕੇ) ਖੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ, ਓਹ ਨਾ ਮੁੱਕਣ ਵਾਲੇ (ਅਨੰਦ ਵਿਖੇ) ਸਮਾ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Cultivating the True Guru, those who earn through Him get merged into His inexhaustible Being.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਪਰਗਟਿਸਦਾਨਿਬਾਹੀਐ।
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਨਾਲ) ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਬਾਹ ਕਰੀਏ।
The company of the saints is manifestly great; one should always be in and with it.
ਚਾਵਲਿਇਕਤੇਸਟਿਨਦੂਜੀਵਾਹੀਐ।
ਇੱਕੇ ਸੱਟ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ (ਕੌਰੇ) ਚਾਵਲ (ਚਿੱਟੇ ਕਰੋ) ਦੂਜੀ ਸੱਟ ਨਾ ਵੱਜੇ। (ਭਾਵ ਇਹ ਕਿ ਇਸੇ ਵਿਚ ਜਿੱਤ ਲਓ ਦੂਜਾ ਜਨਮ ਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ)।
Husk in the form of maya should be separated from the rice of life
ਜਮਦੀਫਾਹੀਕਟਿਦਾਦਿਇਲਾਹੀਐ।
ਰੱਬ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਪਾਕੇ ਜਮ ਹੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਟ ਸਿੱਟੀਏ।
with strokes of discipline during this very life.
ਪੰਜੇਦੂਤਸੰਘਟਿਢੇਰੀਢਾਹੀਐ।
ਪੰਜਾਂ ਹੀ ਦੂਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਘੇਰਕੇ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ) ਢੇਰੀ ਢਾਹ ਦੇਈਏ।
All the five evil propensities, should be decimated.
ਪਾਣੀਜਿਉਹਰਿਹਟਿਸੁਖੇਤਿਉਮਾਹੀਐ।੬।
(੯) ਹਰਟ ਦੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਾਂਙ (ਸੁਰਤ ਦੇ) ਖੇਤ ਨੂੰ ਹਰਾ ਰਖੀਏ (ਭਾਵ ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ ਚਾਉ ਭਰੇ ਰਹੀਏ)।
As the water of well keeps the fields green, the field of the consciousness should be kept verdant (with the help of shabad).
ਪੂਰਾਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਆਪਿਨਅਲਖੁਲਖਾਵਈ।
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ) ਆਪ ਹੈ, (ਪਰ ਓਹ) ਅਲਖ ਹੈ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਲਖਾਉਂਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
Lord Himself is the true Guru who is imperceptible.
ਦੇਖੈਥਾਪਿਉਥਾਪਿਜਿਉਤਿਸੁਭਾਵਈ।
(ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ) ਉਤਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਤੇ ਲੈ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Of His own will He Establishes or uproots.
ਲੇਪੁਨਪੁੰਨਿਨਪਾਪਿਉਪਾਇਸਮਾਵਈ।
ਉਪਾਉਣ ਤੇ ਸਮਾਉਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਉਸਨੂੰ) ਪਾਪਾ ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾ ਲੇਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
The sin and virtue of creation and destruction do not touch Him at all.
ਲਾਗੂਵਰੁਨਸਰਾਪਨਆਪਜਣਾਵਈ।
ਨਾ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਜਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਵਰ ਸਰਾਪ ਦਾ ਲਾਗੂ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
He never makes anybody notice Him and boons and curses do not stick to Him.
ਗਾਵੈਸਬਦੁਅਲਾਪਿਅਕਥੁਸੁਣਾਵਈ।
ਸਬਦ ਦਾ ਅਲਾਪ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਕੱਥ ਕਥਨੀਆਂ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੁਹਝ ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਸੁਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The true Guru recites the Word and unfolds the grandeur of that indescribable Lord.
ਅਕਥਕਥਾਜਪੁਜਾਪਿਨਜਗਤੁਕਮਾਵਈ।
ਅਕੱਥ ਕਥਾ ਕਰਦਾ (ਆਤਮ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇਂਦਾ), ਜਾਪ ਜਪਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਜਗਤ (ਦੀ ਕਾਰ ਰਾਗ ਦ੍ਵੈਖ ਦੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ।
Eulogosong the ineffable (Lord) he does not indulge in hypocrisy and guile.
ਪੂਰੈਗੁਰਪਰਤਾਪਿਆਪੁਗਵਾਵਈ।
(ਐਸੇ) ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਨਾਲ (ਜਗ੍ਯਾਸੂਆਂ ਦਾ) ਆਪਾ ਭਾਵ ਗੁਆਚਦਾ ਹੈ।
The effulgence of the perfect Guru finishes off the ego of the seekers of knowledge.
ਲਾਹੇਤਿਨੇਤਾਪਿਸੰਤਾਪਿਘਟਾਵਈ।
(ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ) ਤਿੰਨੇ ਤਾਪ ਉਤਾਰਦਾ ਤੇ ਸੰਤਾਪ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Guru effacing the three suferings (god-sent, physical and spiritual) lessens the anxieties of the people.
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀਮਨਧ੍ਰਾਪਿਨਿਜਘਰਿਆਵਈ।੭।
(੯) (ਐਸੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਟਿਕਦਾ ਤੇ (ਜਗ੍ਯਾਸੂ) ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Getting satiated by the teachings of such a Guru, the individual stays in his innate nature.
ਪੂਰਾਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਤਿਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਭਾਲੀਐ।
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸਤਿ (ਸਰੂਪ) ਹੈ, ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਹੋਕੇ ਉਸਦੀ) ਭਾਲ ਕਰੀਏ।
The perfect Guru is truth incarnate who is realised by becoming gurmukh.
ਪੂਰੀਸਤਿਗੁਰਮਤਿਸਬਦਿਸਮਾਲੀਐ।
(ਉਸ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੀ ਪੂਰੀਮਤਿ (ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਦਾ) ਸਬਦ ਦੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰੀਏ।
The desire of the true Guru is that the Word should be sustained;
ਦਰਗਹਧੋਈਐਪਤਿਹਉਮੈਜਾਲੀਐ।
(ਅਤੇ) ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਸਾੜਕੇ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਤ ਧੋ ਲਵੀਏ (ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ?)
Burning the ego one will get honour in the court of Lord.
ਘਰਹੀਜੋਗਜੁਗਤਿਬੈਸਣਧਰਮਸਾਲੀਐ।
ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ) ਜੁੜ ਜਾਣ ਦੀ ਜੁਗਤ ਧਰਮਸਾਲ (ਸਤਿਸੰਗ) ਵਿਚ ਬੈਠਕੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਵੀਏ।
One should learn the technique of merging in the Lord by considering one’s home as the place for cultivating dharma.
ਪਾਵਣਮੋਖਮੁਕਤਿਗੁਰਸਿਖਪਾਲੀਐ।
ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਨੂੰ ਐਉਂ ਲੈਕੇ ਪਾਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕੇਵਲ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Liberation for them is certain who abide by the teaching of the Guru.
ਅੰਤਰਿਪ੍ਰੇਮਭਗਤਿਨਦਰਿਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ।
(ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦਰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਪਰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਮੇਹਰ ਦੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
They having loving devotion in their heart remain jubliant.
ਪਤਿਸਾਹੀਇਕਛਤਿਖਰੀਸੁਖਾਲੀਐ।
ਇਕ ਛਤ(=ਇਕ ਛੱਤ੍ਰ ਵਾਲੀ ਸੁਤੰਤ੍ਰ) ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹੀ (ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਖਰੀ ਸੁਖੱਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਯਥਾ-ਰਾਜਾ ਸਗਲੀ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਭਿੰਨਾ)।
Such people are emperors full of delight.
ਪਾਣੀਪੀਹਣੁਘਤਿਸੇਵਾਘਾਲੀਐ।
(ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੋਕੇ ਫੇਰ) ਪਾਣੀ (ਢੋਣ, ਚੱਕੀ ਦਾ) ਪੀਹਣਾ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਤੇ (ਹੋਰ) ਸੇਵਾ ਘਾਲਦੇ ਹਨ।
Becoming egoless they serve the sangat, congregation, by bringing water, grinding corn etc. for it.
ਮਸਕੀਨੀਵਿਚਵਤਿਚਾਲੇਚਾਲੀਐ।੮।
(੯) ਨਿਰਾਲੀ ਚਾਲ (ਇਹ ਹੈ) ਕਿ ਗ਼ਰੀਬੀ ਵਿਚ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
In humility and joy they lead altogether distinct life.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਚਾਖੇਲੁਗੁਰਉਪਦੇਸਿਆ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਸਚਾ ਲੇਖ (ਇਹ ਹੈ)।
The Guru preaches to the Sikh to be pure in conduct.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਦਾਮੇਲੁਸਬਦਿਅਵੇਸਿਆ।
ਸਤਿਸੰਗ ਨਾਲ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ) ਮੇਲ (ਕੀਤਾ ਤੇ) ਸਬਦ ਵਿਖੇ ਘਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
He (gurmukh) joining the congregation remains absorbed in the Word.
ਫੁਲੀਤਿਲੀਫੁਲੇਲੁਸੰਗਿਸਲੇਸਿਆ।
ਫੁਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਕੇ ਤਿਲ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਫੁਲੇਲ (ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਤਿਵੇਂ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ) ਸਤਿਸੰਗ ਹੈ।
In the company of flowers the sesame oil also becomes scented.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਨਕਨਕੇਲਮਿਟੈਅੰਦੇਸਿਆ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੱਕ ਵਿਖੇ (ਭਾਣੇ ਦੀ) ਨਕੇਲ (ਪਾਈ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ) ਅੰਦੇਸੇ ਮਿਟੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
Nose – string of God’s Will remains in the nose of the Sikh of the Guru i.e. he always keeps himself ready to be subservient to the Lord.
ਨਾਵਣਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਵੇਲਵਸਣਸੁਦੇਸਿਆ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ, (ਸਤਿਸੰਗ ਰੂਪੀ ਅਥਵਾ ਸ੍ਵੈ ਸਰੂਪ ਰੂਪੀ) ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਖੇ ਵੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
Taking bath in the ambrosial hours he remains enrapt in the region of the Lord.
ਗੁਰਜਪਿਰਿਦੈਸੁਹੇਲੁਗੁਰਪਰਵੇਸਿਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਜਾਪ ਰਿਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਜਪਕੇ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ (ਰਿਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Remembering Guru in his heart he becomes one with Him.
ਭਾਉਭਗਤਿਭਉਭੇਲੁਸਾਧਸਰੇਸਿਆ।
ਭੈ, ਭਾਉ, ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਲ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ) ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਸਾਧੂ ਹਨ।
He having the fear of the Lord and a loving devotion, is known as the sadhu of high stature.
ਨਿਤਨਿਤਨਵਲਨਵੇਲਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਭੇਸਿਆ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਨਵੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਨਵਾਂ ਭੇਸ (ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦਾ ਰੰਗ) ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The fast colour of the Lord goes on compounding on a gurmukh.
ਖੈਰਦਲਾਲੁਦਲੇਲਸੇਵਸਹੇਸਿਆ।੯।
(੯) (ਗੁਰਮੁਖ) ਖ਼ੈਰ (ਨਾਮ ਰੂਪੀ ਭਿੱਖਯਾ ਦੇ, ਜੋ ਖੈਰ ਦਾਤੀ ਹੈ, ਸੌਦਾ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ) ਦਲੇਰ ਦਲਾਲ ਹਨ, (ਸੇਵ=) ਪੂਜਨੀਕ ਤੇ (ਸਹੇਸਿਆ-ਸਹਈਸ਼) ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਦੇ ਸਾਥ ਮਿਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
The gurmukh only remains with the supreme Lord who is the giver of supreme delight and fearlessness.
ਗੁਰਮੂਰਤਿਕਰਿਧਿਆਨਸਦਾਹਜੂਰਹੈ।
ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਕਰ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਸਦਾ ਹਜੂਰ ਹੈ।
Concentrate upon the Guru-word considering it as the figure of the Guru who is always with you.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਬਦੁਗਿਆਨੁਨੇੜਿਨਦੂਰਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੁਵਾਰੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਗ੍ਯਾਨ (ਹੋਯਾ ਹੈ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ) ਨੇੜੇ (ਭਾਸਦਾ) ਹੈ, ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
Due to the knowledge of the Word, the gurmukh finds the Lord always near and not far off.
ਪੂਰਬਿਲਿਖਤਨੀਸਾਣਕਰਮਅੰਕੂਰਹੈ।
(ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ) ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਗੂਰ ਪੂਰਬ ਲਿਖੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ (ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ) ਹੈ।
But the seed of karmas aprouts according to the previous karmas.
ਗੁਰਸੇਵਾਪਰਧਾਨੁਸੇਵਕਸੂਰਹੈ।
ਸੂਰਮਾ ਸੇਵਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਰਧਾਨ (ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ) ਹੈ।
The valiant servant becomes leader in doing service to the Guru.
ਪੂਰਨਪਰਮਨਿਧਾਨਸਦਭਰਪੂਰਹੈ।
ਪੂਰਨ ਵਡਾ ਭੰਡਾਰ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ) ਸਦਾ ਭਰਪੂਰ ਹੈ (ਕਦੇ ਖਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ)।
God, the supreme store house is always full and omnipresent.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਅਸਥਾਨੁਜਗਮਗਨੂਰਹੈ।
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੇ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਵਿਖੇ (ਉਸਦਾ) ਨੂਰ ਜਗਮਗ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
His glory shines forth in the holy congregation of the saints.
ਲਖਲਖਸਸੀਅਰਭਾਨਕਿਰਣਿਠਰੂਰਹੈ।
(ਸਤਿਸੰਗ ਦੇ ਨੂਰ-ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ) ਲੱਖਾਂ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾਂ ਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਸੂਰਜਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਿਰਨਾਂ ਠੰਢੀਆਂ (ਮਾਤ) ਹਨ।
The brightness of myriads of moons and suns is subdued before the light of the holy congregation.
ਲਖਲਖਬੇਦਪੁਰਾਣਿਕੀਰਤਨਚੂਰਹੈ।
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਬੇਦਾ ਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਪੁਰਾਨ (ਸਤਿਸੰਗ ਦੇ) ਕੀਰਤਨ ਅੱਗੇ ਮਾਤ ਹਨ।
Millions of Vedas and Puranas are insignificant before the praises of the Lord.
ਭਗਤਿਵਛਲਪਰਵਾਣੁਚਰਣਾਧੂਰਹੈ।੧੦।
(੯) (ਐਸੇ ਦੀ) ਚਰਨ ਧੂੜ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਯਾਰੇ (ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰ) ਵਲੋਂ ਪਰਵਾਨ ਹੈ।
The dust of the feet of the beloved of the Lord is dear to the gurmukh.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁਸਿਖੁਗੁਰਸੋਇਅਲਖੁਲਖਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਹੋਕੇ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੋਕੇ ਉਸ ਅਲਖ (ਪਰਮੇਸਰ) ਨੂੰ ਲਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ;
Being one with each other the Guru and the Sikh have made the Lord perceptible (in the form of Guru).
ਗੁਰਦੀਖਿਆਲੈਸਿਖਿਸਿਖੁਸਦਾਇਆ।
(ਕਿੱਕੁਰ? ਉੱਤਰ) ਗੁਰੂ (ਨਾਨਕ) ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖ੍ਯਾ ਲੈਕੇ ਸਿੱਖ (ਅੰਗਦ ਪਹਿਲੇ) ਸਿੱਖ ਸਦਾਇਆ।
Getting initiated by the Guru the disciple has become a Sikh.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਇਕੋਹੋਇਜੋਗੁਰਭਾਇਆ।
(ਜਦ ਦੀਖ੍ਯਾ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੋ ਗਈ ਅਰ) ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾ ਗਿਆ (ਤਦ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ (ਰੂਪ) ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
It was the Lord’s desire that the Guru and the disciple would become one.
ਹੀਰਾਕਣੀਪਰੋਇਹੀਰੁਬਿਧਾਇਆ।
(ਮਾਨੋ) ਹੀਰੇ ਦੀ ਕਣੀ ਨੇ ਹੀਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਵਿੰਨ੍ਹਕੇ ਪੁਰੋ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
It seems as if the diamond cutting the diamond has brought the other one in one string;
ਜਲਤਰੰਗੁਅਵਲੋਇਸਲਿਲਸਮਾਇਆ।
(ਜਿਵੇਂ) ਜਲ ਦੇ ਤਰੰਗਾਂ (=ਲਹਿਰਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖੋ, ਜਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਸਮਾਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
Or the wave of water has merged in water, or the light of one lamp has come to reside in another lamp.
ਜੋਤੀਜੋਤਿਸਮੋਇਦੀਪੁਦੀਪਾਇਆ।
(ਜਿੱਕੁਰ) ਦੀਵੇ ਤੋਂ ਦੀਵਾ ਜਗਕੇ ਜੋਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੋਤ ਸਮਾ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
The wondrous deed (of the Lord) seems to have been transformed into a parable.
ਅਚਰਜਅਚਰਜੁਢੋਇਚਲਤੁਬਣਾਇਆ।
ਅਸਚਰਜ (ਤੋਂ) ਅਸਚਰਜ ਕਾਰਨਾਂ (ਨਾਲ) ਚਰਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਰਚ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
It is as if the sacred ghee has been produced after churning the curd.
ਦੁਧਹੁਦਹੀਵਿਲੋਇਘਿਉਕਢਾਇਆ।
ਜਿੱਕੁਰ ਦੁੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਦਹੀਂ (ਤੇ ਦਹੀਂ ਰਿੜਕ ਕੇ) ਘਿਉ ਕੱਢ ਲਿਆ।
The One Light has scattered in all the three worlds.
ਇਕੁਚਾਨਣੁਤ੍ਰਿਹੁਲੋਇਪ੍ਰਗਟੀਆਇਆ।੧੧।
(੯) ਇਕੋ ਚਾਨਣਾ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਦਾ) ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ (ਐਉਂ) ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।

(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ) ਅੰਗਦ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਅਲਖ ਤੇ ਅਭੇਦ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵਿਚ) ਸਹਿਜ (ਪਦ ਦੇਕੇ) ਸਮਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
He installed Guru Angad Dev on the invisible abd mysterious throne of equipoise.
ਅਮਰਹੁਅਮਰਸਮੇਉਅਲਖਅਲੋਇਆ।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਨੇ) ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ 'ਅਮਰ' (ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ) ਵਿਖੇ ਸਮਾਕੇ ਅਲੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਲਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
Merging Amar Das into the external Lord he made him see the invisible.
ਰਾਮਨਾਮਅਰਿਖੇਉਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁਚੋਇਆ।
(ਗੁਰੂ) ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰ ਦਾਸ ਨੇ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ (ਦੇ ਪ੍ਯਾਲੇ) ਦਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਚੋਇਆ।
Guru Ram Das was made to quaff the delight of supreme nectar.
ਗੁਰਅਰਜਨਕਰਿਸੇਉਢੋੲੈਢੋਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀਤੀ(ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਵੱਲੋਂ) ਦਾਤ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਵਾਜੇ ਗਏ।
Guru Arjan Dev got the largess of service (from Guru Ram Das).
ਗੁਰਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦਅਮੇਉਅਮਿਉਵਿਲੋਇਆ।
ਹਰਿ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਜੀ ਨੇ (ਸ਼ਬਦ) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਰਿੜਕਿਆ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ (ਅਰਜਨ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਾਲ) ਅਮੇਉ (=ਅਗਾਧ) ਹੋ ਗਏ (ਅਥਵਾ)
Guru Hargobind also churned the sea (of Word)
ਸਚਾਸਚਿਸੁਚੇਉਸਚਿਖਲੋਇਆ।
ਸਚੇ (ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ) ਸੱਚ (ਏਨ੍ਹਾਂ) ਸੁੱਚਿਆਂ (ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ) ਸਚ ਮੁੱਚ (ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਿਦੇ ਵਿਚ) ਖਲੋ ਗਿਆ।
And due to the grace of all these truthful personalities, the truth of the Lord has come to reside in the hearts of common people, who have fully devoted their selves to the Word.
ਆਤਮਅਗਹਅਗਹੇਉਸਬਦਪਰੋਇਆ।
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ) ਆਤਮ (=ਮਨ) ਨੂੰ ਅਗਾਧ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ (ਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ) ਪੁਰੋ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
Even empty hearts of the people have been filled by sabad, the Word
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਅਭਰਭਰੇਉਭਰਮਭਉਖੋਇਆ।੧੨।
(੯) (ਏਨ੍ਹਾਂ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਨਾ ਭਰੇ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ (ਹਿਰਦਿਆਂ) ਨੂੰ (ਗੁਰ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨਾਲ) ਭਰਪੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦਾ) ਭਰਮ ਤੇ ਡਰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿਤਾ।
And the Gurmukhs have exterminated their fears and delusions.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਭਉਭਾਉਸਹਜੁਬੈਰਾਗੁਹੈ।
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤ (ਵਿਖੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲੋਕ) ਭਉ (ਡਰ) ਤੇ ਭਾਉ (ਪ੍ਰੇਮ) ਰਖਦੇ ਤੇ ਸਹਿਜੇ ਹੀ ਵੈਰਾਗੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Fear (of God) and love (for mankind) being diffused in the holy congregation the sense of non-attachment always prevails.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਹਜਿਸੁਭਾਉਸੁਰਤਿਸੁਜਾਗੁਹੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸਹਿਜ ਸੁਭਾ ਹੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾਗਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਸੁਰਤ ਸਬਦ ਵਿਖੇ ਜੁੜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ)
By nature, the Gurmukhs remian alert i.e. their consciousness remains attuned to Sabad, the Word.
ਮਧਰਬਚਨਅਲਾਉਹਉਮੈਤਿਆਗੁਹੈ।
ਮਿੱਠੇ ਬਚਨ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ (ਸਦਾ) ਤਿਆਗ (ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ)।
They speak sweet words and they have already expelled ego from their selves.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਮਤਿਪਰਥਾਉਸਦਾਅਨੁਰਾਗਹੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਤ ਦੇ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੁਰਾਗ (ਪ੍ਰੇਮ) ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
Conducting themselves according to the wisdom of the Guru they always remain imbued in love (of the Lord).
ਪਿਰਮਪਿਆਲੇਸਾਉਮਸਤਕਿਭਾਗੁਹੈ।
ਪਿਰੀ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਲੇ ਦਾ ਸਾਉ (=ਸੁਆਦ) ਆਇਆ ਹੈ, ਮੱਥੇ ਪੁਰ ਭਾਗ ਹੈ!
They feeling fortunate quaff the cup of love (of the Lord).
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਜੋਤਿਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਉਗਿਆਨੁਚਰਾਗੁਹੈ।
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਜੋਤਿ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਂ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੀ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਦੇ ਚਰਾਗ (ਦੀਵੇ) ਦੇਣ ਹਾਰੇ (ਹੋ ਗਏ) ਹਨ।
Realising the light of the Supreme in their mind they become competent to light the lamp of divine knowledge.
ਅੰਤਰਿਗੁਰਮਤਿਚਾਉਅਲਿਪਤੁਅਦਾਗੁਹੈ।
ਅੰਦਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਵੱਡਾ) ਚਾਉ (ਅਨੰਦ) ਹੈ, (ਇਸੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮਾਯਾ ਤੇ) ਅਲੇਪ (ਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਯਾਂ ਥੋਂ) ਬੇਦਾਗ਼ ਹਨ।
Due to the wisdom obtained from Guru they have unlimited enthusiasm and they remain untouched by maya and the dirt of the evil propensities.
ਵੀਹਇਕੀਹਚੜਾਉਸਦਾਸੁਹਾਗਹੈ।੧੩।
ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਵੀਹ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਯਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਫਸਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਇਕੀਸ=ਇਕ ਈਸ਼੍ਵਵਰ ਵਿਖੇ) ਚੜ੍ਹਾਉ (ਉਨੱਤੀ) ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ) ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹਾਗ (ਸਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾ ਅਨੰਦ ਲੈ ਰਹੇ) ਹਨ।
In the context of worldliness, they always conduct themselves in a superior position i.e. if the world is twenty, they are twenty one.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਬਦਸਮਾਲਸੁਰਤਿਸਮਾਲੀਐ।
ਜੋ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ (ਸੰਮਾਲ=) ਯਾਦ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਓਹ ਸੁਰਤ) ਭਗਵੰਤ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਅਥਵਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਸੰਮ੍ਹਾਲ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਮ੍ਹਾਲਕੇ ਰੱਖੀਏ; ਭਾਵ ਸੁਰਤ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਅਭ੍ਯਾਸ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਏ)।
The words of gurmukh should always be cherished in one’s heart.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਦਰਿਨਿਹਾਲਨੇਹਨਿਹਾਲੀਐ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਦਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਨਿਹਾਲ ਹੋਈਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਨੇਹ=) ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰੀਏ।
By the benevolent glance of the gurmukh one becomes blest and happy.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੇਵਾਘਾਲਿਵਿਰਲੇਘਾਲੀਐ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ ਘਾਲ ਕਮਾਈ (ਕਿਸੇ) ਵਿਰਲੇ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
Rare are those who attain the sense of discipline and service.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਦੀਨਦਇਆਲਹੇਤੁਹਿਲਾਈਐ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਦੀਨ ਦਿਆਲੂ ਹਨ (ਹੇਤ ਹਿਆਲੀਐ=) ਦਿਲੀ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
Gurmukhs being full of love are kind to the poor.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਿਬਹੇਨਾਲਿਗੁਰਸਿਖਪਾਲੀਐ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਬਾਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਅੰਤ ਸਹਾਈ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤਾਂਤੇ) ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖ੍ਯਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਲੀਏ।
Gurmukh is ever steadfast and always adheres to the teachings of the Guru.
ਰਤਨਪਦਾਰਥਲਾਲਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਭਾਲੀਐ।
(ਰਤਨ) ਵੈਰਾਗ (ਲਾਲ=) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ (ਆਦਿ) ਪਦਾਰਥ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਟੋਲੀਏ।
One should seek jewels and rubies from the gurmukhs.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਅਕਲਅਕਾਲਭਗਤਿਸੁਖਾਲੀਐ।
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਅਕਲ=) ਕਲਪਨਾ ਤੇ ਰਹਿਤ ਹਨ, (ਅਕਾਲ=) ਅਮਰ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ (ਭਗਤੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਹੈ ਅਥਵਾ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਹੈ।
Gurmukhs are devoid of deception; they, without becoming victim of Time, go on enjoying the delight of devotion.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਹੰਸਾਢਾਲਿਰਸਕਰਸਾਲੀਐ।੧੪।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਲੋਕ) ਹੰਸਾਂ ਵਾਂਙ (ਤੱਤ ਮਿੱਥ੍ਯਾ ਦਾ ਵਿਵੇਚਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮਨੋ ਤਨੋ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਹੋਕੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Gurmukhs have discriminatory wisdom of swans (who can separate milk from water), and they with their mind and body love their Lord.
ਏਕਾਏਕੰਕਾਰੁਲਿਖਿਦੇਖਾਲਿਆ।
ਏਕੇ ਦੁਆਰ 'ਇਕ' ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਲਿਖਕੇ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
By writing 1 (One) in the beginning, it has been shown that Ekankar, God, who subsumes all forms in Him is only one (and not two or three).
ਊੜਾਓਅੰਕਾਰੁਪਾਸਿਬਹਾਲਿਆ।
ਊੜੇ ਥੋਂ ਓਕੰਕਾਰ' ੴ ਪਾਸ ਬਹਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
Ura, the first Gurmukhi letter, in the form of Oankar shows the world controlling power of that one Lord.
ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁਕਰਤਾਰੁਨਿਰਭਉਭਾਲਿਆ।
ਸਤਿਨਾਮ (=ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ) ਤੇ ਕਰਤਾਰ (=ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖ=ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਕਰਤਾ), ਭਉ ਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (=ਨਿਰਭਉ) ਜਾਣਕੇ (ਓਅੰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਬਹਾਲੇ ਹਨ)।
That Lord has been understood as the True-Name, Creator and the Fearless One.
ਨਿਰਵੈਰਹੁਜੈਕਾਰੁਅਜੂਨਿਅਕਾਲਿਆ।
ਨਿਰਵੈਰ' ਹੈ, (ਜੈਕਾਰ=) ਜਯ ਮੂਰਤਿ (ਮੂਰਤ) ਹੈ, ਅਜੋਨੀ (ਸੈਭੰ) ਅਤੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਹੈ।
He is devoid of rancour, beyond time and free from the cycle of transmigration.
ਸਚੁਨੀਸਾਣੁਅਪਾਰੁਜੋਤਿਉਜਾਲਿਆ।
(ਉਸਦਾ) ਨੀਸਾਣ (ਪਰਵਾਨ) ਅਪਾਰ ਤੇ ਸੱਚਾ ਹੈ, (ਸਾਰੇ ਉਸੇ ਦੀ) ਜੋਤੀ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੈ।
Hail the Lord! His mark is truth and He shines in bright effulgent flame.
ਪੰਜਅਖਰਉਪਕਾਰਨਾਮੁਸਮਾਲਿਆ।
ਪੰਜ ਅੱਖਰ (ੴਅੰਕਾਰ ਅਰਥਾਤ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਜਿਸ ਪਰ) ਉਪਕਾਰ (=ਕਿਰਪਾ) ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਉਸਦੇ) ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਲ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Five letters (1 Oankar) are altruists; they have in them the power of the person of the Lord.
ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰਸੁਖੁਸਾਰੁਨਦਰਿਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ।
(ਫੇਰ ਉਹ ਪੁਰਸ਼) ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰ ਦੀ ਨਦਰ ਨਾਲ (ਨਿਹਾਲ=) ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The individual, understanding their import becomes blest with graceful glance of God who is the essence of delights.
ਨਉਅਗਿਸੁੰਨਸੁਮਾਰੁਸੰਗਿਨਿਰਾਲਿਆ।
(ਨਉਂ ਅੰਗ ਸੁੰਨ ਸੁਮਾਰ ਅਰਥਾਤ=) ੧ ਥੋਂ ਲੈਕੇ ੯ ਅੰਗ ਸੁੰਨ (=ਬਿੰਦੀ) ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਮਾਰ (=ਗਿਣਤੀ) ਨਾਲ ਨਿਰਾਲੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
As the numerals from one to nine adding zero with them reach to the infinite count
ਨੀਲਅਨੀਲਵੀਚਾਰਪਿਰਮਪਿਆਲਿਆ।੧੫।
(੯) ਅਤੇ (ਨੀਲ ਅਨੀਲ=) ਨੀਲ ਦਸ ਨੀਲ (ਤੋੜੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਹੁੰਚਦੇ ਹਨ) ਦੀ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੇ ਪਿ੍ਯਾਲੇ (ਵਿਚ ਵਧਦੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ) ਹਨ ('ਨੀਲ' ਭਾਵ ਵਡੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸੰਖ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਅਨੀਲ ਤੋਂ ਭਾਵ ਬੇਗਿਣਤ ਹੈ)।
The persons who quaff the cup of love from their beloved become master of infinite powers.
ਚਾਰਵਰਨਸਤਿਸੰਗੁਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮੇਲਿਆ।
ਚਾਰੇ ਵਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ (ਲੋਕ) ਸਤਿਸੰਗ ਵਿਖੇ ਮਿਲਕੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਹੋਕੇ ਖੇਡਦੇ ਵਰਤਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The people of all the four varnas sit together in the company of gurmukhs.
ਜਾਣਤੰਬੋਲਹੁਰੰਗੁਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਚੇਲਿਆ।
(ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਂਤ) ਪਾਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੀੜੇ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਾਂਙੂੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਦਾ ਚਾਲਾ ਹੈ। (ਭਾਵ ਕੱਥ ਸੁਪਾਰੀ ਚੂਨਾਂ ਪਾਨ ਮਿਲਕੇ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਲਾਲ ਰੰਗ ਇੱਕੋ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਤਥਾ ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ, ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ, ਸੂਦ, ਵੈਸ਼ ਚਾਰ ਰੰਗ ਸਤਿਸੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ। ਇਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਹੀ ਕਹਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
All the disciples become gurmukh as betel leaf, lime and chatehu when mixed become of one red colour.

(ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੂੰ) ਪੰਜ ਅਨਾਹਦ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਇਕ ਰਸ ਖਿਡਾਉਂਦੇ (=ਆਨੰਦਿਤ ਰਖਦੇ) ਹਨ।
All the five sounds (produced by different instruments) keep the gurmukhs full of joy.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਬਦਿਤਰੰਗਸਦਾਸੁਹੇਲਿਆ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਬਦ ਦੀ (ਤਰੰਗ=) ਲਹਿਰ ਨਾਲ (ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲਿਆ=) ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੀ (ਗੁਰਮੁਖ) ਬਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
In the waves of the Word of the true Guru, gurmukhs ever remain in delight.
ਸਬਦਸੁਰਤਿਪਰਸੰਗਗਿਆਨਸੰਗਮੇਲਿਆ।
ਸਬਦ ਗ੍ਯਾਤ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Joining their consciousness to the Guru’s teachings, they become knowledgeable.
ਰਾਗਨਾਦਸਰਬੰਗਅਹਿਨਿਸਿਭੇਲਿਆ।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ) ਰਾਗ ਨਾਦ ਨਾਲ (ਸਰਬੰਗ=) ਹਰ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਮਿਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
They keep themselves absorbed day and night in the great resonance of Gurbani, the holy hymns.
ਸਬਦਅਨਾਹਦੁਰੰਗਸੁਝਇਕੇਲਿਆ।
ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੇ (ਅਨਾਹਦ=) ਬੇਹੱਦ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ (ਆਤਮਾ) ਹੀ (ਸਾਰੇ) ਸੁੱਝਦਾ ਹੈ।
Drowned into the infinite Word and its steadfast colour only the One (God) is realised.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪੰਥੁਨਿਪੰਗੁਬਾਰਹਖੇਲਿਆ।੧੬।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੰਥ (ਨਿਪੰਗ=) ਚਿੱਕੜ ਤੋਂ ਰਹਿਤ (ਭਾਵ ਨਿਰਮਲ) ਹੈ, ਬਾਰਾਂ (ਪੰਜ ਕਰਮ, ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ, ਪੰਜ ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੇ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਬੁਧ) ਥੋਂ ਖੇਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਅਥਵਾ ਬਾਰਹ=ਪੰਜ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੰਜ ਗੁਣ, ਧੀਰਜ ਛੇਵਾਂ, ਸੰਤੋਖ ਸੱਤਵਾਂ, ਦਯਾ ਅੱਠਵਾਂ, ਧਰਮ ਨੌਵਾਂ, ਸਤ ਦਸਵਾਂ, ਗਿਆਨ ਯਾਰਵਾਂ, ਤੇ ਵੈਰਾਗ ਬਾਰ੍ਹਵਾਂ, ਇਨ੍ਹਾ
Out of the twelve ways (of yogis) the way of the gurmukhs is the correct way.
ਹੋਈਆਗਿਆਆਦਿਆਦਿਨਿਰੰਜਨੋ।
ਪਹਿਲੇ (ਜਦ) ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੀ, (ਜੋ ਸਰਬ ਦੀ) ਆਦਿ ਹੈ, ਆਗਿਆ ਹੋਈ।
In the primordial times the Lord ordained.
ਨਾਦੈਮਿਲਿਆਨਾਦੁਹਉਮੈਭੰਜਨੋ।
(ਤਦ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਬਖਸ਼ਿਆ) ਹਉਮੈ ਨੂੰ ਕੱਟਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਜਿਸਦੇ, ਸੁਰਤ ਵਿਚ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਹਉਮੈਂ ਟੁੱਟ ਗਈ, ਉਸ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਜਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ (ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
The Word of the Guru met with the Sabda-brahm Word-God and the ego of creatures got erased.
ਬਿਸਮਾਦੇਬਿਸਮਾਦੁਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਅੰਜਨੋ।
(ਇਸ ਲਈ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਜਨ (ਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਸੁਰਮਾਂ) ਅਚਰਜ ਥੋਂ ਅਚਰਜ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ।
This very awe-inspiring word is the collyrium of gurmukhs.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿਭਰਮੁਨਿਖੰਜਨੋ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਤ (ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਨੇ ਤੇ ਸਭ) ਭਰਮ (ਦੇ ਪੜਦੇ) ਕੱਟੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Adopting Gurmat, the wisdom of the Guru, with the grace of the Guru, the delusions are eschewed.
ਆਦਿਪੁਰਖੁਪਰਮਾਦਿਅਕਾਲਅਗੰਜਨੋ।
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ, ਅਕਾਲ ਤੇ (ਅਗੰਜ) ਨਾ ਟੁੱਟਣ ਵਾਲ ਹੈ।
That primordial being is beyond time and destruction.
ਸੇਵਕਸਿਵਸਨਕਾਦਿਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਕਰੰਜਨੋ।
(ਇਹ) ਸੇਵਕਾਂ, ਕਲਯਾਨ ਸਰੂਪ ਤੇ ਸਨਕਾਦਾਂ ਪਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
He bestows grace upon His servants like Siva and Sanaks et al.
ਜਪੀਐਜੁਗਹਜੁਗਾਦਿਗੁਰਸਿਖਮੰਜਨੋ।
ਜੁਗਾਂ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਯੰਤ ਹੇ ਉੱਜਲ ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖੋ! ਜਪੀ ਚੱਲੋ। (ਅ) ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਇਹੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦੇ ਹਨ।
In all the ages only He is remembered and He alone is the object of concentration of the Sikhs.
ਪਿਰਮਪਿਆਲੇਸਾਦੁਪਰਮਪੁਰੰਜਨੋ।
ਪਿਰੀ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਲੇ ਦਾ ਸ੍ਵਾਦ (ਜਦ ਆਇਆ ਤਦ) ਸਾਰੇ (ਪਰਮ ਪੁਰੰਜਨ) ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ (ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Through the taste of the cup of love that Supreme Love is known.
ਆਦਿਜੁਗਾਦਿਅਨਾਦਿਸਰਬਸੁਰੰਜਨੋ।੧੭।
(੯) (ਉਹ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ) ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਅਨਾਦਿ ਸਰਬ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਕ (ਇਕ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ) ਹੈ।
Since the primordial time He has been delighting all.
ਮੁਰਦਾਹੋਇਮੁਰੀਦੁਨਗਲੀਹੋਵਣਾ।
ਚੇਲਾ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਥੋਂ) ਮਰਕੇ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਗੱਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
Only by becoming dead in life, i.e. totally detached, and not through mere verbal jargon one can become a true disciple.
ਸਾਬਰੁਸਿਦਕਿਸਹੀਦੁਭ੍ਰਮਭਉਖੋਵਣਾ।
ਸੰਤੋਖੀ, ਸੱਚ ਪੁਰ ਸ਼ਹੀਦ, ਭਰਮ ਤੇ ਡਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ)
One could be such a person only after getting sacrificed for truth and contentment and by eschewing delusions and fears.
ਗੋਲਾਮੁਲਖਰੀਦੁਕਾਰੇਜੋਵਣਾ।
ਮੁੱਲ ਖਰੀਦੀ ਗੁਲਾਮ ਹੋਵੇ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਟਹਿਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹੇ।
The true disciple is a boughten slave who is ever busy in the service of the Master.
ਨਤਿਸੁਭੁਖਨਨੀਦਨਖਾਣਾਸੋਵਣਾ।
(ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਦੀ) ਉਹ ਨਾਂ ਭੁੱਖ ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਨੀਂਦ ਦੀ (ਪਰਵਾਹ ਕਰੇ) ਤੇ ਨਾਂ ਸੌਣ ਤੇ ਖਾਣ ਦੀ।
He forgets hunger, sleep, food and rest.
ਪੀਹਣਿਹੋਇਜਦੀਦਪਾਣੀਢੋਵਣਾ।
ਤਾਜ਼ਾ ਆਟਾ ਪੀਹੇ, ਪਾਣੀ ਢੋਵੇ,
He grinds fresh flour (for free kitchen) and serves by fetching water.
ਪਖੇਦੀਤਾਗੀਦਪਗਮਲਿਧੋਵਣਾ।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਤਾਕੀਦ ਨਾਲ ਚਰਨ ਮਲਕੇ ਧੋਵੇ ਤੇ ਪੱਖਾ ਝੱਲੇ।
He fans (the congregation) and washes nicely the feet of the Guru.
ਸੇਵਕਹੋਇਸੰਜੀਦਨਹਸਣੁਰੋਵਣਾ।
ਸੇਵਕ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਹੋਵੇ, ਨਾ ਹੱਸੇ ਨਾ ਰੋਵੇ (ਭਾਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨੇ-ਜੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਝਿੜਕੇ ਤ ਮੀਠਾ ਲਾਗੈ ਜੇ ਬਖਸੇ ਤੇ ਗੁਰ ਵਡਿਆਈ)।
The servant always remains disciplined and has nothing to do with wailing and laughing.
ਦਰਦਰਵੇਸਰਸੀਦੁਪਿਰਮਰਸੁਭੋਵਣਾ।
(ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ) ਜੋ ਦਰ ਦਾ ਦਰਵੇਸ਼ ਹੋਕੇ ਪਹੁੰਚੇ (ਉਹ) ਪਿਰੀ ਦੇ (ਰਸ=) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਖੇ ਭਿੱਜੇਗਾ।
This way he becomes dervish at the door of the Lord and gets drenched in the delights of the rains of love.
ਚੰਦਮੁਮਾਰਖਿਈਦਪੁਗਿਖਲੋਵਣਾ।੧੮।
(੯) ਈਦ ਦੇ ਚੰਦ ਵਾਂਙੂ ਵਧਾਈਆਂ ਮਿਲਨਗੀਆਂ ਤੇ (ਪੁੰਨ੍ਯਾਂ ਦੇ ਚੰਦ ਵਾਂਙੂ) ਪੁੱਗ ਖਲੋਊ (ਭਾਵ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਊ)।
He will be seen as the first moon of Id day (which the Muslims eagerly wait for in order to break their long fasts), and only he will come out as a perfect man.
ਪੈਰੀਪੈਪਾਖਾਕੁਮੁਰੀਦੈਥੀਵਣਾ।
ਮੁਰੀਦ (ਨੂੰ ਚਾਹੀਏ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਪੈਰੀਂ ਪੈਕੇ, ਚਰਣ ਧੂੜ ਬਣੇ।
By becoming the dust of the feet the disciple is required to be near the feet of the the Guru.
ਗੁਰਮੂਰਤਿਮੁਸਤਾਕੁਮਰਿਮਰਿਜੀਵਣਾ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਮੂਰਤ ਦਾ ਮੁਸ਼ਤਾਕ (=ਆਸ਼ਿਕ ਜਾਂ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ) ਰਹੇ, (ਰਬ ਦੇ ਪਾਸਿਓਂ) ਮੋਇਆ (ਹੋਇਆ) ਜੀਵੇ (ਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਲੋਂ) ਮਰੇ।
Becoming an avid suiter of the form (word) of the Guru and being dead to greed, infatuation and other relational propensities, he should remain alive in the world.
ਪਰਹਰਸਭੇਸਾਕਸੁਰੰਗਰੰਗੀਵਣਾ।
ਸਾਰੇ ਸਾਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡਕੇ (ਇਕ ਭਗਤੀ ਦੇ) ਸੁਹਣੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਖੇ ਰੰਗਿਆ ਰਹੇ।
Repudiating all worldly connections he must remain dyed in the colour of the Lord.
ਹੋਰਨਝਖਣੁਝਾਕਸਰਣਿਮਨੁਸੀਵਣਾ।
ਹੋਰ ਝਾਕਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਨਾ ਝਖਾਂ ਮਾਰੇ, (ਇਕ ਹਰੀ ਦੀ) ਸ਼ਰਣ (ਵਿਖੇ) ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੀਉਂ ਛੱਡੇ।
Seeking no shelter elsewhere he should keep his mind absorbed in the shelterof God, the Guru.
ਪਿਰਮਪਿਆਲਾਪਾਕਅਮਿਅਰਸੁਪੀਵਣਾ।
ਪਿਰੀ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਲੇ ਦੇ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਪਾਨ ਕਰੋ।
Sacred is the cup of the love of the beloved; he should quaff that only.
ਮਸਕੀਨੀਅਉਤਾਕਅਸਥਿਰੁਥੀਵਣਾ।
ਗਰੀਬੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਿਹਾਇਸ਼ ਰਖੇ, (ਤਾਂ) ਚਿਰੰਜੀਵ ਹੋ ਜਾਊ।
Making humility his abode he should get poised in it.
ਦਸਅਉਰਤਿਤਲਾਕਸਹਜਿਅਲੀਵਣਾ।
ਦਸ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਲਾਕ ਦੇਵੇ (ਤਾਂ) ਸਹਜ ਵਿਚ ਸਮਾਵੇਗਾ।
Divorcing the (tastes of ) ten organs i.e.not being caught in their dragnet, he should attain equipose.
ਸਾਵਧਾਨਗੁਰਵਾਕਨਮਨਭਰਮੀਵਣਾ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਵਾਕਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਾਵਧਾਨ ਰਹੇ, ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਭਰਮ ਨਾ ਜਾਵੇ।
He must be fully conscious about the word of Guru and should not allow the mind to be entrapped in delusions.
ਸਬਦਸੁਰਤਿਹੁਸਨਾਕਪਾਰਿਪਰੀਵਣਾ।੧੯।
(੯) ਸਬਦ ਦੀ ਗ੍ਯਾਤ ਦੀ ਹੁਸ਼ਿਆਰੀ (ਮੁਰੀਦ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰੋਂ) ਪਾਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Absorption of consciousness in the Word makes him alert and this way one gets across the Word – ocean.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਰਣੀਜਾਇਸੀਸੁਨਿਵਾਇਆ।
(ਜਿਸ ਨੇ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨੀ ਜਾਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਨਿਵਾਇਆ।
He is true Sikh who surrenders before the Guru and bows his head;
ਗੁਰਚਰਣੀਚਿਤੁਲਾਇਮਥਾਲਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਨ ਲਾਕੇ ਮੱਥਾ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ (ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦਾ ਮੱਥਾ, ਦੇਖਾ ਦੇਖੀਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ)।
Who puts his mind and forehead on the feet of Guru;
ਗੁਰਮਤਿਰਿਦੈਵਸਾਇਆਪੁਗਵਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾਕੇ ਆਪਾ (ਮਨਮਤਿ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਆ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
Who holding dear to his heart the teachings of the Guru expels ego from his self;
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਹਜਿਸੁਭਾਇਭਾਣਾਭਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਵਲ ਮੁਖ ਰਖਿਆ (ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਿਹਾ) ਸਹਿਜ ਦਾ ਸੁਭਾਵ (ਕੀਤਾ), ਭਾਣੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਜਾਤਾ।
Who loves the will of Lord and has attained equipoise by becoming Guru-oriented, gurmukh;
ਸਬਦਸੁਰਤਿਲਿਵਲਾਇਹੁਕਮੁਕਮਾਇਆ।
ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਖੇ ਸੁਰਤ ਲਾ ਕੇ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਕਮਾਇਆ।
Who by merging his consciousness in the Word has acted according to the divine Will (hukam).
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਭੈਭਾਇਨਿਜਘਰੁਪਾਇਆ।
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਭੈ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰੱਖਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਘਰ (ਸਰੂਪ) ਲੱਭ ਲੀਤਾ।
He (the true Sikh) as the result of his love and fear of holy congregation attains his own self (atma).
ਚਰਣਕਵਲਪਤਿਆਇਭਵਰੁਲੁਭਾਇਆ।
(ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਚਰਣਾਂ ਕਵਲਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਤੀਜਕੇ ਭਵਰੇ ਵਾਂਙ ਲੁਭਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
He remains stuck to the lotus feet of the Guru like the black bee.
ਸੁਖਸੰਪਟਪਰਚਾਇਅਪਿਉਪੀਆਇਆ।
ਸੁਖ ਦੇ (ਸੰਪਟ) ਡੱਬੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ (ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੇ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਪਰਚਕੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪੀਤਾ।
Getting enveloped in this delight he goes on quaffing the nectar.
ਧੰਨੁਜਣੇਦੀਮਾਇਸਹਿਲਾਆਇਆ।੨੦।੩।ਤ੍ਰੈ।
(੯) (ਉਸ ਸਿਖ ਦੀ) ਜਣਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਧੰਨ ਹੈ (ਉਸਦਾ) ਆਉਣਾ ਸਫਲਾ ਹੈ।
Blessed is the mother of such a person. Only his coming to this world is fruitful.
