ਤ੍ਰਾਸਕੁਟੰਬਕੇਹੁਇਕੈਉਦਾਸਅਵਾਸਕੋਤਿਆਗਿਬਸਿਓਬਨਿਰਾਈ॥
ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਡਰ ਤੋਂ ਉਦਾਸ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਘਰ ਛਡ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਬਨ ਵਿਚ ਜਾ ਵਸਿਆ।
Dejected on account of the tragic happening in the family, he deserted his home and came to live in the forest.
ਨਾਮਸੁਰਥਮੁਨੀਸਰਬੇਖਸਮੇਤਸਮਾਦਿਸਮਾਧਿਲਗਾਈ॥
'ਸੁਰਥ' ਨਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਨੀਸ਼ਵਰ ਭੇਖ ਵਾਲੇ (ਉਸ ਰਾਜੇ ਨੇ ਸਮਾਨ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ) 'ਸਮਾਧਿ' (ਵੈਸ਼) ਨਾਲ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ
His name was Surath and adopting the garb of sages, he engaged himself in contemplation.
ਚੰਡਅਖੰਡਖੰਡੇਕਰਕੋਪਭਈਸੁਰਰਛਨਕੋਸਮੁਹਾਈ॥
ਕਿ ਚੰਡੀ (ਨਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ) ਨਾ ਖੰਡੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਕਰਕੇ ਖੰਡਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਰਖਿਆ ਲਈ (ਕਿਵੇਂ) ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੋਈ।
The goddess Chandika of perfect brilliance is there before all, She is the destroyer of demons and Protector of gods.
ਬੂਝਹੁਜਾਇਤਿਨੈਤੁਮਸਾਧਅਗਾਧਿਕਥਾਕਿਹਭਾਤਿਸੁਨਾਈ॥੭॥
ਉਹ (ਦੋਵੇਂ 'ਮੇਧਸ' ਰਿਸ਼ੀ ਪਾਸ) ਜਾ ਕੇ ਪੁਛਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਿ ਹੇ ਸਾਧੂ ਪੁਰਸ਼! (ਚੰਡੀ ਦੀ) ਅਗਾਧ ਕਥਾ ਕਿਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਹੈ? (ਸਾਨੂੰ) ਸੁਣਾਓ ॥੭॥
The sage Surath told his companion sage, “O hermit, try to comprehend now, what his marvelous story it is?”7.

ਮੁਨੀਸੁਰੋਵਾਚ॥
ਮੁਨੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ:
The Great Sage said:
ਹਰਿਸੋਇਰਹੈਸਜਿਸੈਨਤਹਾ॥
ਜਿਥੇ ਸੇਜਾ (ਸੈਨ) ਨੂੰ ਸਜਾ ਕੇ ਹਰਿ (ਵਿਸ਼ਣੂ) ਸੌਂ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ
ਜਲਜਾਲਕਰਾਲਬਿਸਾਲਜਹਾ॥
ਅਤੇ ਜਿਥੇ ਜਲ ਦਾ ਫੈਲਾਉ ਬਹੁਤ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਸੀ,
The Lord was sleeping on an adorned bed, within the terrible and vast expanse of water.
ਭਯੋਨਾਭਿਸਰੋਜਤੇਬਿਸੁਕਰਤਾ॥
(ਉਥੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਣੂ ਦੀ) ਨਾਭੀ ਤੋਂ ਕਮਲਫੁਲ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਅਤੇ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਵਿਸ਼ਵ ਦਾ ਕਰਤਾ (ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ) ਉਤਪੰਨ ਹੋਇਆ।
ਸ੍ਰੁਤਮੈਲਤੇਦੈਤਰਚੇਜੁਗਤਾ॥੮॥
(ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਕੰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਤੋਂ ਦੋ ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਹੋਈ ॥੮॥
From His navel-lotus Brahma was born, with some device, the demons were created from the dross of His ear.8.
ਮਧੁਕੈਟਭਨਾਮਧਰੇਤਿਨਕੇ॥
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ (ਦੋਹਾਂ ਦੈਂਤਾਂ) ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਮਧੁ ਅਤੇ ਕੈਟਭ ਰਖੇ ਗਏ
ਅਤਿਦੀਰਘਦੇਹਭਏਜਿਨਕੇ॥
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਰੀਰ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਡੇ ਹੋ ਗਏ।
They were named as Madhu and Kaitabh, their bodies were enormously great.
ਤਿਨਦੇਖਿਲੁਕੇਸਡਰਿਓਹੀਅਮੈ॥
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖ ਕੇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ (ਲੁਕੇਸ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਬਹੁਤ ਡਰਿਆ।
ਜਗਮਾਤਕੋਧਿਆਨੁਧਰਿਯੋਜੀਅਮੈ॥੯॥
(ਉਸ ਨੇ ਤੁਰਤ) ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਜਗ-ਮਾਤਾ (ਦੁਰਗਾ) ਦਾ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਿਆ ॥੯॥
Seeing them, Brahma became fearful, He contemplated in his mind on the universal mother.9.
ਦੋਹਰਾ॥
ਦੋਹਰਾ:

ਛੁਟੀਚੰਡਿਜਾਗੈਬ੍ਰਹਮਕਰਿਓਜੁਧਕੋਸਾਜੁ॥
(ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ) ਯੋਗ-ਨਿੰਦ੍ਰਾ (ਚੰਡ) ਖੁਲ੍ਹੀ, ਵਿਸ਼ਣੂ ਜਾਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਯੁੱਧ ਦੀ ਤਿਆਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ।
When the Lord Vishnu awoke from sleep, he made preparations for war.
ਦੈਤਸਭੈਘਟਿਜਾਹਿਜਿਉਬਢੈਦੇਵਤਨਰਾਜ॥੧੦॥
ਜਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੈਂਤ ਘਟ ਜਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਰਾਜ ਵੱਧੇ (ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਯਤਨ ਕਰਨ ਲਗੇ) ॥੧੦॥
So that the demons may decrease in number and the rule of gods be increased.10.
ਸ੍ਵੈਯਾ॥
ਸ੍ਵੈਯਾ:

ਜੁਧਕਰਿਓਤਿਨਸੋਭਗਵੰਤਿਨਮਾਰਸਕੈਅਤਿਦੈਤਬਲੀਹੈ॥
ਵਿਸ਼ਣੂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਯੁੱਧ ਕੀਤਾ, (ਪਰ) ਮਾਰ ਨਾ ਸਕੇ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਦੈਂਤ ਅਤਿ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਸਨ।
The Lord waged the war against the demons, but He could not kill them because they were very brave.
ਸਾਲਭਏਤਿਨਪੰਚਹਜਾਰਦੁਹੂੰਲਰਤੇਨਹਿਬਾਹਟਲੀਹੈ॥
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੋਹਾਂ (ਵਿਸ਼ਣੂ ਅਤੇ ਦੈਂਤਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਲੜਦਿਆਂ ਪੰਜ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਸਾਲ ਬੀਤ ਗਏ, (ਪਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੀ ਵੀ) ਬਾਂਹ ਨਾ ਥਕੀ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਲਗਾਤਾਰ ਯੁੱਧ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੇ)।
It took five thousand years in fighting, but they were not tired.
ਦੈਤਨਰੀਝਕਹਿਓਬਰਮਾਂਗਕਹਿਓਹਰਿਸੀਸਨਦੇਹੁਭਲੀਹੈ॥
ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਨੇ (ਵਿਸ਼ਣੂ ਦੇ ਪਰਾਕ੍ਰਮ ਤੋਂ) ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ (ਤੂੰ ਕੋਈ) ਵਰ ਮੰਗ। (ਉੱਤਰ ਵਿਚ) ਹਰਿ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸਿਰ ਦੇ ਦਿਓ। (ਦੈਂਤਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ) ਚੰਗੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ।
Having been pleased with the power of the Lord, the demons asked the Lord to request for a boon, the Lord asked them to surrender their bodies.
ਧਾਰਿਉਰੂਪਰਿਚਕ੍ਰਸੋਕਾਟਕੈਜੋਤਲੈਆਪਨੈਅੰਗਿਮਲੀਹੈ॥੧੧॥
(ਵਿਸ਼ਣੂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੱਟਾਂ ਉਤੇ ਰਖ ਕੇ ਸੁਦਰਸ਼ਨ-ਚੱਕਰ ਨਾਲ ਕਟ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ) ਜੋਤਿ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ (ਵਿਸ਼ਣੂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੀ) ਸ਼ਰੀਰ ਵਿਚ ਮਿਲਾ ਲਈ ॥੧੧॥
Putting them in his lap, the Lord cut off their heads and assimilated their strength within Himself.11.
ਸੋਰਠਾ॥
ਸੋਰਠਾ:
SORATHA
ਦੇਵਨਥਾਪਿਓਰਾਜਮਧੁਕੈਟਭਕੋਮਾਰਕੈ॥
ਮਧੁ ਅਤੇ ਕੈਟਭ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਜ ਦੀ ਸਥਾਪਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ।
The Lord established the rule of gods after killing Madhu and Kaitabh.
ਦੀਨੋਸਕਲਸਮਾਜਬੈਕੁੰਠਗਾਮੀਹਰਿਭਏ॥੧੨॥
ਰਾਜ ਭਾਗ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਸਾਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਣੂ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਚਲੇ ਗਏ ॥੧੨॥
He gave all the paraphernalia to them and Himself went to Heaven.12.
ਇਤਿਸ੍ਰੀਮਾਰਕੰਡੇਪੁਰਾਨੇਚੰਡੀਚਰਿਤ੍ਰਉਕਤਿਬਿਲਾਸਮਧੁਕੈਟਭਬਧਹਿਪ੍ਰਥਮਧਯਾਇਸਮਾਪਤਮਸਤੁਸੁਭਮਸਤੁ॥੧॥
ਇਥੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਮਾਰਕੰਡੇ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਦੇ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਚੰਡੀ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਉਕਤਿ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਦੇ 'ਮਧੁ ਕੈਟਭ ਦੇ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ' ਪਹਿਲੇ ਅਧਿਆਇ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਪਤੀ ਹੈ, ਸਭ ਸ਼ੁਭ ਹੈ ॥੧॥
