ਸਤਿਗੁਰਨਾਨਕਦੇਉਆਪੁਉਪਾਇਆ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ (ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ) ਆਪ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
God himself created the true Guru Nanak.
ਗੁਰਅੰਗਦੁਗੁਰਸਿਖੁਬਬਾਣੇਆਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਜੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਬਾਬੇ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣੀ ਆ ਪਏ, (ਗੱਲ ਕੀ ਆਪ ਬੀ ਬਾਬੇ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋਏ)।
Becoming Sikh of the Guru, Guru Angad joined this family.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁਹੈਗੁਰਅਮਰੁਸਤਿਗੁਰਭਾਇਆ।
(ਤੀਜੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਅਮਰਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਖ ਹੋਏ (ਤੇ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਅੰਗਦ ਜੀ) ਨੂੰ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਲੱਗੇ।
Liked by the true Guru, Guru Amar Das became Sikh of the Guru.
ਰਾਮਦਾਸੁਗੁਰਸਿਖੁਗੁਰੁਸਦਵਾਇਆ।
(ਚੌਥੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਰਾਮਦਾਸ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਬੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖ ਹੋਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਦਵਾਇਆ।
Then Ram Das, the Sikh of the Guru came to be known as the Guru.
ਗੁਰੁਅਰਜਨੁਗੁਰਸਿਖੁਪਰਗਟੀਆਇਆ।
(ਪੰਚਮ ਗੁਰੂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਜੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪਰਗਟ ਹੋਏ, (ਭਾਵ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਪੂਣੇ ਦਾ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ)।
Thereafter came Guru Arjan as the disciple of the Guru (and got established as the Guru).
ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁਹਰਿਗੋਵਿੰਦੁਨਲੁਕੈਲੁਕਾਇਆ।੧।
ਛੀਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਜੀ ਸਿਖ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਹੋਏ ਜੋ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ) ਲੁਕਾਏ ਲੁਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ।
Hargobind, the Sikh of the Guru cannot remain concealed even if somebody wishes to (and this further means that all the Gurus had the same light).

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪਾਰਸੁਹੋਇਪੂਜਕਰਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਆਪ ਪਾਰਸ ਹੋ ਕੇ (ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪੂਜਕ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The Gurmukh (Guru Nanak) by becoming the philosopher's stone made all the disciples venerable.
ਅਸਟਧਾਤੁਇਕੁਧਾਤੁਜੋਤਿਜਗਾਇਆ।
ਅੱਠਾਂ ਧਾਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਧਾਤੂ (ਕਰਕੇ, ਜਾਤ ਵਰਨ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ਗਵਾਕੇ) ਜੋਤ ਜਗਾ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
He illumined the people of all the varnas as the philosopher's stone converts all the right metals into gold.
ਬਾਵਨਚੰਦਨੁਹੋਇਬਿਰਖੁਬੋਹਾਇਆ।
(ਗੁਰਮੁਖ) ਬਾਵਨ ਚੰਦਨ ਹੋਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਬਿਰਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਗੰਧਿਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
By becoming sandalwood he made all the trees fragrant.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁਸਿਖੁਗੁਰਹੋਇਅਚਰਜੁਦਿਖਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਖ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਫੇਰ ਸਿਖੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੋਕੇ ਅਚਰਜ ਦਸਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿ ਜੋਤ ਇਕ ਤੇ ਮੂਰਤਾਂ ਕਈ ਭਾਸਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਅਗੇ ਪੰਜਵੀਂ ਤੇ ਛੀਵੀਂ ਤੁਕ ਵਿਖੇ ਦੋ ਹੋਰ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਂਤ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਪੱਕਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
He accomplished the wonder of making disciple the Guru.
ਜੋਤੀਜੋਤਿਜਗਾਇਦੀਪੁਦੀਪਾਇਆ।
ਜੋਤ ਜੋਤ ਥੀਂ ਜਗਾਕੇ ਦੀਵੇ ਤੋਂ ਦੀਵਾ ਬਾਲ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Extended his light similarly as a lamp is lit by another lamp.
ਨੀਰੈਅੰਦਰਿਨੀਰੁਮਿਲੈਮਿਲਾਇਆ।੨।
ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਾਂਙੂ ਮਿਲਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਮੇਲ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
As the water mixing with water becomes one, likewise deleting ego, the Sikh merges into the Guru.
ਪਉੜੀ੩
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਜਨਮੁਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਪਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ (ਧਾਰਣਾ) ਸਫਲ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ (ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ) ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
The life of that Gurmukh is successful who has met the true Guru.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪੂਰਕਰੰਮੁਸਰਣੀਆਇਆ।
(ਇਸੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਪੂਰੇ ਕਰਮਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੀ) ਸ਼ਰਣ ਲੀਤੀ ਹੈ (ਸ਼ਰਣ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਕੀ ਹੈ?)।
The Gurmukh who has surrendered before the Guru is a blest one and his fate is perfect one.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਪੈਰੀਪਾਇਨਾਉਦਿੜਾਇਆ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾਂ ਨੇ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਚਰਨੀਂ ਲਾਕੇ (ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ) ਨਾਮ (ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼) ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਕਰਾਇਆ ਹੈ। (ਇਸ ਦਾ ਫਲ?)
The true Guru, by giving him place around his feet has made him remember the name (of the Lord).
ਘਰਹੀਵਿਚਿਉਦਾਸੁਨਵਿਆਪੈਮਾਇਆ।
ਘਰ ਹੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਉਦਾਸ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਮਾਇਆ ਦੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦੀ। (ਹੋਰ ਕੀ?)
Now being detached, he remains at home and maya does not affect him.
ਗੁਰਉਪਦੇਸੁਕਮਾਇਅਲਖੁਲਖਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਾ ਅੱਭ੍ਯਾਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ('ਅਲੱਖ'=) ਜੋ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਲਖਿਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਲਖ ਲੀਤਾ ਹੈ। (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਗਿਆਨ ਵੈਰਾਗ ਦੇ ਨੇਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਰਤ ਅਵ੍ਯਕਤ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਿਹਾਕੁ “ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਅਖੜੀਆ ਬਿਅੰਨਿ ਜਿਨੀ ਡਿਸੰਦੋ ਮਾ ਪਿਰੀ”)।
By putting into practice the teachings of the Guru, he has realised he invisible Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਜੀਵਨਮੁਕਤੁਆਪੁਗਵਾਇਆ।੩।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਆਪਾ ਭਾਵ ਦੂਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸੇ ਦਾ ਅਨੁਵਾਦ ਅਗਲੀ ਚੌਥੀ ਪੌੜੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਬੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Losing his ego, the Guru-orientated Gurmukh has become liberated though still embodied.
ਪਉੜੀ੪
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਆਪੁਗਵਾਇਨਆਪੁਗਣਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੇ (ਮਨ ਕਰਕੇ) ਆਪਾ ਭਾਉ ਗਵਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਰ (ਤਨ ਕਰਕੇ) ਬੀ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਕੁਝ ਚੀਜ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਿਣਦੇ।
The Gurmukhs erase their ego and never allow themselves to be noticed.
ਦੂਜਾਭਾਉਮਿਟਾਇਇਕੁਧਿਆਇਆ।
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ' (ਅਗ੍ਯਾਨ) ਨੂੰ ਤਰਕ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਇਕ (ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ) ਦਾ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Effacing duality, they venerate only one Lord.
ਗੁਰਪਰਮੇਸਰੁਜਾਣਿਸਬਦੁਕਮਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ (ਦਾ ਰੂਪ) ਜਾਣਕੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਅਭ੍ਯਾਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ 'ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸਾਰੇ')।
Accepting Guru as God they by cultivating the words of the Guru, translate them into life.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਚਲਿਜਾਇਸੀਸੁਨਿਵਾਇਆ।
(ਸਰੀਰ ਕਰਕੇ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾਕੇ ਸੀਸ ਨਿਵਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਆਕੜ ਖਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣਦੇ)।
The Gurmukhs serve and attain the fruits of happiness.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਕਾਰਕਮਾਇਸੁਖਫਲੁਪਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ 'ਕਾਰ' ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
This way receiving the cup of love,
ਪਿਰਮਪਿਆਲਾਪਾਇਅਜਰੁਜਰਾਇਆ।੪।
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਪੀਕੇ 'ਅਜਰ' ਨੂੰ ਜਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
They bear the effect of this unbearable in their mind.
ਪਉੜੀ੫
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਵੇਲੇਉਠਿਜਾਗਜਗਾਇਆ।
ਪ੍ਰਾਤਾਕਾਲੇ ਉੱਠਕੇ (ਆਪ) ਜਾਗਕੇ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸੁਚੇਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The Guru-orientated gets up early in the morning and makes others also to do so.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਤੀਰਥਨਾਇਭਰਮਗਵਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲੋਕ ਤੀਰਥ ਤੇ ਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਭਰਮ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਸਭ ਤੀਰਥ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੀਰਥ ਦਾ ਭਰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਖਦੇ)।
Discarding delusions is equal to bathing at the holy places for him.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮੰਤੁਸਮ੍ਹਾਲਿਜਪੁਜਪਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲੋਕ (ਜਪੁਜੀ) ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਸੋਧਕੇ ਜਪਦੇ ਅਰ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਜਪਣ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Gurmukh carefully and attentively recites the moolmantar.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਨਿਹਚਲੁਹੋਇਇਕਮਨਿਧਿਆਇਆ।
ਫੇਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿੱਖ੍ਯਾ ਨੂੰ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅਚਲ ਹੋ ਇਕ ਮਨ ਨਾਲ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ) ਧ੍ਯਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The Gurmukh single-mindedly concentrates upon the Lord.
ਮਥੈਟਿਕਾਲਾਲੁਨੀਸਾਣੁਸੁਹਾਇਆ।
ਮਸਤਕ ਪੁਰ ਲਾਲ ਟਿਕਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਨੀਸਾਣ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਸ਼ੋਭਦਾ ਹੈ (“ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੇਸਰੋ ਲੇ ਛਿਟਕਾਰੇ”। ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਲਾਲ ਟਿੱਕਾ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The red mark of love adorns his forehead.
ਪੈਰੀਪੈਗੁਰਸਿਖਪੈਰੀਪਾਇਆ।੫।
ਪੈਰੀਂ ਪੈ' (ਆਪ ਬੋਲਕੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੀ 'ਪੈਰੀਂ ਪੈਣਾ' ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
Falling on the feet of the Sikhs of the Guru and thus through his own humility, he makes others surrender to his feet.
ਪਉੜੀ੬
ਪੈਰੀਪੈਗੁਰਸਿਖਪੈਰਧੁਆਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਹਥ ਲਾਕੇ, ਪੈਰ ਧੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Touching the feet, the Sikhs of the Guru wash their feet.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਵਾਣੀਚਖਿਮਨੁਵਸਿਆਇਆ।
ਉਸ ਚਰਣਾਂਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਦੀ ('ਵਾਦੀ'=) ਵੰਨਗੀ ਨੂੰ ਚੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਤੇ ਇਉਂ ਹੰਕਾਰੀ) ਮਨ ਵੱਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Then they taste the ambrosial word (of Guru) through which the mind is controlled.
ਪਾਣੀਪਖਾਪੀਹਿਭਠੁਝੁਕਾਇਆ।
ਜਲ (ਦਾ ਭਰਣਾ), ਪੱਖਾ (ਝੱਲਣਾ), (ਚੱਕੀ) ਪੀਹਣੀ, (ਲੰਗਰ ਦੇ 'ਭੱਠ' ਕਹੀਏ) ਚੁੱਲ੍ਹੇ ਹੇਠ ਬਾਲਣ ਪਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
They fetch water, fan the sangat and put wood in the firebox of the kitchen.
ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀਸੁਣਿਸਿਖਿਲਿਖਿਲਿਖਾਇਆ।
(ਜਦ ਉਥੋਂ ਵੇਹਲ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਕੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਕੇ (ਉਸਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਤੇ ਰਹਿਣ) ਸਿੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਫੇਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ) ਲਿਖਕੇ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੀ) ਲਿਖਾ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
They listen to, write and make others write the hymns of the Gurus.
ਨਾਮੁਦਾਨੁਇਸਨਾਨੁਕਰਮਕਮਾਇਆ।
ਨਾਮ, ਦਾਨ ਤੇ ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ (ਤਿੰਨਾਂ) ਕਰਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਮਾਈ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
They practice the remembrance of Lords name, charity and ablutions.
ਨਿਵਚਲਣੁਮਿਠਬੋਲਘਾਲਿਖਵਾਇਆ।੬।
ਨਿਵਕੇ ਚੱਲਦੇ, ਮਿੱਠਾ ਬੋਲਦੇ, ਦਸਾਂ ਨੌਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਜੂਰੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪ ਛਕਦੇ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ) ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛਕਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣ-”ਘਾਲਿ ਖਾਇ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਥਹੁ ਦੇਇ॥ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਹੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਸੇਇ॥”)।
They walk in humility, speak sweetly, and eat the earning of their own hands.
ਪਉੜੀ੭
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂਗੁਰਸਿਖਮੇਲਿਮਿਲਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮੇਲ, ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ (ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਨੇ) ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
The Sikhs of Guru meet the Sikhs of the Guru.
ਭਾਇਭਗਤਿਗੁਰਪੁਰਬਕਰੈਕਰਾਇਆ।
ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ ਭਗਤੀ, ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ ਕਰਦੇ, ਅਰ ਕਰਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Bound by the loving devotion, they celebrate the anniversaries of the Guru.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਦੇਵੀਦੇਵਜਠੇਰੇਭਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਅਰ ਵਡਕੇ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ।
For them, the Sikh of the Guru is the god, goddess and the father.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਮਾਂਪਿਉਵੀਰਕੁਟੰਬਸਬਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਤ, ਪਿਤਾ, ਭਰਾ, ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸੱਭੋ ਕੁਝ (ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Mother, father, brother and the family also is the Sikh of the Guru.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਖੇਤੀਵਣਜੁਲਾਹਾਪਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਖੇਤ ਵਣਜ ਜਾਣਕੇ ਲਾਭ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। (“ਸੰਤਨ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਲੇਵਾ ਦੇਵੀ ਸੰਤਨ ਸਿਉ ਬਿਉਹਾਰਾ॥ ਸੰਤਨ ਸਿਉ ਹਮ ਲਾਹਾ ਖਾਟਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ॥”)
Meeting to the Sikhs of the Guru is farming business as well as other gainful occupations for the Sikh.
ਹੰਸਵੰਸਗੁਰਸਿਖਗੁਰਸਿਖਜਾਇਆ।੭।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਖ ਹੰਸਾਂ ਦੀ ਵੰਸ (ਵਾਂਙ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ ਬਾਹਰੋਂ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹਨ), ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖ ਦੇ ਜਾਏ (ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਹੰਸ ਹਨ)।
The progeny of the swan like Sikhs of Guru is also the Sikh of the Guru.

ਸਜਾਖਬਾਸਉਣੁਨਮੰਨਿਵਸਾਇਆ।
ਭਲਾ ਬੁਰਾ ਸ਼ਗਨ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲੋਕ ਮਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਖਦੇ।
The Gurmukhs never take to their heart the omen on the right or the left.
ਨਾਰਿਪੁਰਖਨੋਵੇਖਿਨਪੈਰੁਹਟਾਇਆ।
ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪੁਰਖਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਵੇਖਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਪੈਰਾਂ (ਪਿੱਛੇ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹਟਾਉਂਦੇ (ਭਾਵ ਸਗਨ ਕੁਸਗਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦੇ)।
They do not retrace their steps while seeing a man or woman.
ਭਾਖਸੁਭਾਖਵੀਚਾਰਿਨਛਿਕਮਨਾਇਆ।
ਬੋਲ ਕਬੋਲ (ਜਾਨਵਰ ਦੇ ਬੋਲਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸਗਨ ਵਿਚਾਰੀਦੇ ਹਲ) ਅਤੇ ਨਿੱਛ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ।
They do not pay attention to the crises of animals or sneezing.
ਦੇਵੀਦੇਵਨਸੇਵਿਨਪੂਜਕਰਾਇਆ।
ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੇਂਵਦੇ ਨਾ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Goddess and gods are neither served nor worshipped by them.
ਭੰਭਲਭੂਸੇਖਾਇਨਮਨੁਭਰਮਾਇਆ।
(ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਛੁੱਟ ਕਿਸੇ ਲਈ) ਨਾ ਮਨ ਭਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਨਾ ਭੰਭਲ ਭੂਸੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
By not entangling in deceits, they do not allow their minds to wander.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਸਚਾਖੇਤੁਬੀਜਫਲਾਇਆ।੮।
(ਐਸੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਸੱਚਾ ਖੇਤ ਹਨ (ਜਿਥੇ ਸ਼ਰਧਾ ਦਾ) ਬੀਜ ਪਾਇਆ ਫਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Gursikhs have sowed the seed of truth in the field of life and have made it fruitful.
ਪਉੜੀ੯
ਕਿਰਤਿਵਿਰਤਿਮਨੁਧਰਮੁਸਚੁਦਿੜਾਇਆ।
(ਇਸ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਿੱਖ) ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਉਪਜੀਵਕਾ ਦੀ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਅਰ ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
For earning livelihood, the Gurmukhs keep in mind, the dharma and always remember the truth.
ਸਚੁਨਾਉਕਰਤਾਰੁਆਪੁਉਪਾਇਆ।
(ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ) ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦਾ ਹੈ, ਆਪ (ਈਸ਼ਵਰ ਨੇ) ਉਤਪਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਤੇ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ)।
They know that the creator himself has created (and diffused) the truth.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਪੁਰਖੁਦਇਆਲੁਦਇਆਕਰਿਆਇਆ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਿਆਲ (ਆਪ) ਦਇਆ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਉਥੇ) ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
That true Guru, the supreme one, compassionately has descended on earth.
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਆਕਾਰੁਸਬਦੁਸੁਣਾਇਆ।
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਅਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਣਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਯਥਾ:-”ਨਿਰਗੁਨੁ ਆਪਿ ਸਰਗੁਨ ਭੀ ਓਹੀ॥ ਕਲਾਧਾਰਿ ਜਿਲ ਸਗਲੀ ਮੋਹੀ॥”)
Personifying the formless into the form of Word He has recited it for one and all.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਸਚੁਖੰਡਥੇਹੁਵਸਾਇਆ।
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਰੂਪੀ ਸਚਖੰਡ ਦਾ ('ਥੇਹ') ਨਗਰਿ (ਆਪ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਨੇ) ਵਸਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
The Guru has founded the high mound of the holy congregation known also as the abode of truth.
ਸਚਾਤਖਤੁਬਣਾਇਸਲਾਮੁਕਰਾਇਆ।੯।
(ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਹੀ) ਸਚਾ ਤਖਤ ਹੈ (ਸਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ) ਸਲਾਮੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ ਸਾਰੇ ਨਮਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
There only establishing the true throne he has made all to bow and salute.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੦
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਗੁਰਸਿਖਸੇਵਾਲਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਲਾ ਛਡਿਆ ਹੈ।
The Sikhs of the Guru inspire the Sikhs of the Guru to serve.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਕਰਿਸੇਵਸੁਖਫਲੁਪਾਇਆ।
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ।
Serving the holy congregation they receive the fruit of happiness.
ਤਪੜੁਝਾੜਿਵਿਛਾਇਧੂੜੀਨਾਇਆ।
(ਸੇਵਾ ਕੀ ਹੈ? ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੇ ਬੈਠਣ ਦਾ) ਤੱਪੜ ਝਾੜ ਝੰਬਕੇ ਵਿਛਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਰ ਚਰਣ ਧੂੜੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਨਹਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Sweeping and spreading the sitting mats they bathe in the dust of the holy congregation.
ਕੋਰੇਮਟਅਣਾਇਨੀਰੁਭਰਾਇਆ।
ਕੋਰੇ ਮਟਕੇ ਮੰਗਵਾਕੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਛਬੀਲ ਲਈ) ਜਲ ਨਾਲ ਭਰ ਛਡਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਲ ਠੰਢਾ ਰਹੇ)
They bring unused pitchers and fill them with water (to get it cold).
ਆਣਿਮਹਾਪਰਸਾਦੁਵੰਡਿਖੁਆਇਆ।੧੦।
ਮਹਾਂ ਪਰਸ਼ਾਦ ਮੰਗਵਾਕੇ (ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਖੇ) ਵੰਡਕੇ (ਆਪ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਖੁਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
They bring sacred food (maha parshad), distribute it among others and eat.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੧
ਹੋਇਬਿਰਖੁਸੰਸਾਰੁਸਿਰਤਲਵਾਇਆ।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸਿੱਖ) ਮੂਧੇ ਸਿਰ ਹੋਕੇ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਸਿਰ=ਮੁੰਢ ਹੇਠ ਤੇ ਟਾਹਣੀਆ ਰੂਪੀ ਪੈਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਕਰਕੇ) ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਰਛ ਵਾਂਙੂੰ ਬਣੇ।
Tree is there in the world and keeps its head downward.
ਨਿਹਚਲੁਹੋਇਨਿਵਾਸੁਸੀਸੁਨਿਵਾਇਆ।
(ਬ੍ਰਿਛ ਵਾਂਙ ਮਨ ਦਾ) ਨਿਵਾਸ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਹੋਵੇ ਤੇ ਸੀਸ (ਨਿੰਮ੍ਰਤਾ ਨਾਲ) ਨਿਵਿਆਂ ਰਹੇ।
It stands steadfast and maintains its head low.
ਹੋਇਸੁਫਲਫਲੁਸਫਲੁਵਟਸਹਾਇਆ।
ਚੰਗੇ ਫਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਫਲੀਭੂਤ ਹੋਕੇ ਵੱਟ ਸਹਾਰੇ।
Then becoming full of fruits it bears the stone-blows.
ਸਿਰਿਕਰਵਤੁਧਰਾਇਜਹਾਜੁਬਣਾਇਆ।
(ਤ੍ਰਿਖਾਣ ਦਾ) ਆਰਾ (ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ ਵਾਂਙ) ਸਿਰ ਪੁਰ ਰਖਾਕੇ (ਆਪਣੇ ਤੋਂ) ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਬਣਵਾਏ (ਸਾਧਨ ਸੰਪੰਨ ਹੋਕੇ ਉਪਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ)।
Further it gets sawed and causes to make ship.
ਪਾਣੀਦੇਸਿਰਿਵਾਟਰਾਹੁਚਲਾਇਆ।
ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਰਸਤਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਪੈਂਡਾ ਬਣਾਏ (ਭਾਵ ਭੈਜਲ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਉਤੋਂ ਦੀ ਵਗੇ, ਵਿਚ ਨਾ ਡੁੱਬੇ)।
Now it moves on the head of water.
ਸਿਰਿਕਰਵਤੁਧਰਾਇਸੀਸਚੜਾਇਆ।੧੧।
ਜਿਸ (ਤ੍ਰਿਖਾਣ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਆਰਾ ਧਰਾਇਆ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਬੀ ਸੀਸ ਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਕੇ (ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਰੂਪ ਹੋਕੇ ਪਾਰ) ਕਰੇ।
Having borne iron-saw upon head, it carries the same iron (used in ship making) across the water.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੨
ਲੋਹੇਤਛਿਤਛਾਇਲੋਹਿਜੜਾਇਆ।
(ਕਾਠ ਨੂੰ) ਲੋਹੇ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਤੇਸ਼ੇ ਆਦਿਕ ਹਥਿਆਰਾਂ) ਨਾਲ ਕੱਟ ਵੱਢਕੇ (ਫਿਰ) ਲੋਹੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਜੜ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
With the help of iron the tree is cut and pruned and iron nails are stuck into it.
ਲੋਹਾਸੀਸੁਚੜਾਇਨੀਰਿਤਰਾਇਆ।
(ਪਰ ਬ੍ਰਿਛ) ਲੋਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰ ਪੁਰ ਚਾੜ੍ਹਕੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਤਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਵੈਰੀ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
But the tree carry iron on its head keeps it floating on water.
ਆਪਨੜਾਪੁਤੁਪਾਲਿਨਨੀਰਿਡੁਬਾਇਆ।
ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਬ੍ਰਿਛ) ਨੂੰ ਪਾਲਕੇ ਜਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਡੋਬਦਾ। (ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ-ਭਲਾ ਜੀ ਅਗਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਡੋਬਦਾ ਹੈ?)
The water also considering it its adopted son does not make it sink.
ਅਗਰੈਡੋਬੈਜਾਣਿਡੋਬਿਤਰਾਇਆ।
(ਉੱਤਰ) ਅਗਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਕੇ ਡੋਬਦਾ ਹੈ (ਮਾਨੋਂ) ਡੋਬ ਕੇ ਤਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਕੀਮਤ ਵਧਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
But the sandalwood is sunk intentionally to make it costlier.
ਗੁਣਕੀਤੇਗੁਣਹੋਇਜਗੁਪਤੀਆਇਆ।
(ਇਹ) ਗੁਣ ਕਰਨੇ ਪਰ ਗੁਣ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਪਰ ਸਾਰਾ) ਜਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਭਾਵ ਭਲੇ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਂ ਸਭ ਕੋਈ ਭਲਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪਰੰਤੂ ਜੋ)
The quality of goodness produces goodness and the whole world also remains happy.
ਅਵਗੁਣਸਹਿਗੁਣੁਕਰੈਘੋਲਿਘੁਮਾਇਆ।੧੨।
ਅਵਗੁਣ ਸਹਾਰਕੇ ਉਪਕਾਰ ਕਰੇ (ਉਸ ਉਪਰੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ) ਬਲਿਹਾਰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਾਂ।
I am sacrifice unto him who does good in return of evil.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੩
ਮੰਨੈਸਤਿਗੁਰਹੁਕਮੁਹੁਕਮਿਮਨਾਇਆ।
(ਜੋ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਆਪਣਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਹੈ (ਜਿਹਾ ਕੁ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਟਹਿਲੋਂ ਮਹਿਲ ਪਾ ਲੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਤਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਸਰਬ ਸ਼ਿਰੋਮਣੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Who accepts the order (will) of Lord makes the whole world accept His order (Hukam).
ਭਾਣਾਮੰਨੈਹੁਕਮਿਗੁਰਫੁਰਮਾਇਆ।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਕੀ ਹੈ?) ਗੁਰੂ (ਇਹ ਹੁਕਮ) ਫੁਰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਦਾ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਣਾ ਜੋਗ ਹੈ।
The order of the Guru is that the will of the Lord be accepted positively.
ਪਿਰਮਪਿਆਲਾਪੀਵਿਅਲਖੁਲਖਾਇਆ।
(ਸੋ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਭਾਣਾ ਮੰਨਿਆਂ ਹੈ) ਓਹ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਪੀਕੇ ਅਲਖ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਜੋ ਮਨ ਬਾਣੀ ਥੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਲਖ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Drinking the cup of loving devotion, they visualise the invisible (Lord).
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਅਲਖੁਲਖਾਇਨਅਲਖੁਲਖਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲੋਕ ਅਲਖ ਨੂੰ ਲਖਕੇ ਅਲਖ ਨੂੰ ਲਖਾਉਂਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ (ਕਿ ਅਸਾਂ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ:-”ਕਾਂਏ ਰੇ ਬਕਬਾਦੁ ਲਾਇਓ॥ ਜਿਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਓ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਛਪਾਇਓ॥” ਪੁਨਾ “ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਗੂੰਗੇ ਗੁੜ ਖਾਇਆ ਪੂਛੇ ਤੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਏ”)।
The Gurmukhs even having seen (realised) do not go on divulging this mystery.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਆਪੁਗਵਾਇਨਆਪੁਗਣਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਆਪਾ ਭਾਵ ਗਵਾਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ (ਜਿਨ ਪਟ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਗੁਦੜੁ ਤੇ ਭਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ”)।
Gurmukhs delete ego from the self and never allow themselves to be noticed.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਪਾਇਬੀਜਫਲਾਇਆ।੧੩।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੁਖੈਨ ਹੀ ਫਲ ਪਾਕੇ ਬੀਜ ਨੂੰ ਫਲੀਭੂਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਕਈ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਗੁਣਾ ਹੋਕੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਬੀਜ ਫੈਲਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ)।
The Guru-orientated ones acquire the fruit of happiness and spread its seeds all around.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੪
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਦਰਸਨੁਦੇਖਿਧਿਆਨੁਧਰਾਇਆ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ (ਨੇਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਦੇਖ ਕੇ (ਮਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਚੇਲਾ) ਧ੍ਯਾਨ ਧਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਣ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Having the sight of the true Guru, the Sikh of the Guru concentrates upon Him.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਬਦੁਵੀਚਾਰਿਗਿਆਨੁਕਮਾਇਆ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਵੀਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਅਭ੍ਯਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਨਿਧ੍ਯਾਸਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Pondering upon the word of true Guru he cultivates knowledge.
ਚਰਣਕਵਲਗੁਰਮੰਤੁਚਿਤਿਵਸਾਇਆ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਅਰ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਨੂੰ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਵਸਾਯਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਕਦੇ ਤਿਆਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ। ਫਲ ਕੀ ਹੈ)।
He keeps to his heart the mantra and the lotus feet of Guru.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਸੇਵਕਮਾਇਸੇਵਕਰਾਇਆ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਮਾਕੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)। (ਸੇਵਾ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਕੀ ਹੈ?)
He serves the true Guru and consequently makes the whole world serve him.
ਗੁਰਚੇਲਾਪਰਚਾਇਜਗਪਰਚਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਚੇਲਾ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਚਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ)। (ਹੋਰ ਕੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ?)
The Guru loves disciple and disciple makes the whole world happy.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪੰਥੁਚਲਾਇਨਿਜਘਰਿਛਾਇਆ।੧੪।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਦਾ ਪੰਥ ਚਲਾਕੇ ਆਪ ਨਿਜ ਘਰ (ਕਹੀਏ ਸ੍ਵੈ ਸਰੂਪ) ਵਿਖੇ ਛਾਇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
This way, that disciple creates a religion of the Gurmukhs and situates in his own self.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੫
ਜੋਗਜੁਗਤਿਗੁਰਸਿਖਗੁਰਸਮਝਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋਗ ਦੀ ਜੁਗਤੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸਮਝਾਈ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਇਹ ਹੈ:)
Guru has explained the technique of yoga to the Sikhs.
ਆਸਾਵਿਚਿਨਿਰਾਸਿਨਿਰਾਸੁਵਲਾਇਆ।
ਆਸਾ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਰਹਿਕੇ ਨਿਰਾਸਤਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਿਤੀਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Remain detached amidst all the hopes and cravings.
ਥੋੜਾਪਾਣੀਅੰਨੁਖਾਇਪੀਆਇਆ।
ਥੋੜਾ ਅੰਨ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਥੋੜਾ ਪੀਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਬਾਹਲਾ ਪੇਟੂ ਬਣਨ ਨਾਲ ਭਜਨ ਘੱਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹਾਕੁ, 'ਅੰਨ ਪਾਣੀ ਥੋੜਾ ਖਾਇਆ')।
Eat less food and drink little water.
ਥੋੜਾਬੋਲਣਬੋਲਿਨਝਖਿਝਖਾਇਆ।
ਥੋੜਾ ਬੋਲ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਵਾਧੂ ਬਕਵਾਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ।
Speak less and do not talk nonsensical.
ਥੋੜੀਰਾਤੀਨੀਦਨਮੋਹਿਫਹਾਇਆ।
ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਨੀਂਦ ਬੀ ਥੋੜ੍ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਤੇ ('ਮੋਹ' ਕਹੀਏ) ਅਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਫਸਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਸਿੱਖ੍ਯਾ ਥੋਂ ਉਪਰਾਮ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Sleep less and do not be caught in any infatuation.
ਸੁਹਣੇਅੰਦਰਿਜਾਇਨਲੋਭਲੁਭਾਇਆ।੧੫।
ਸੁਪਨ (ਅਵਸਥਾ) ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾਕੇ ਬੀ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਖੇ ਲੁਭਾਇਮਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ; (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੁਪਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਹੀ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਜਾਂ ਸਤਿਸੰਗ ਵੱਲ ਹੀ ਚਿੱਤ ਲਗਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਥਵਾ 'ਸੋਹਣੇ' ਕਹੀਏ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾਂ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀਆਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾਕੇ ਬੀ ਬਚੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੋਹ ਵਿਖੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਫਸਦੇ)।

ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾਗੁਰਉਪਦੇਸੁਮੰਤ੍ਰੁਸੁਣਾਇਆ।
(ਜੋਗੀ ਦੀਆ) ਮੁੰਦਰਾਂ (ਕਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਹਨ?) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ (ਜੋ ਆਪਣੇ) ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਾ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ (ਇਹੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੁੰਦਰਾਂ ਹਨ, ਭਾਵ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਵੱਡੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼੍ਰਵਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The sermon of the Guru is the earrings of a yogi.
ਖਿੰਥਾਖਿਮਾਸਿਵਾਇਝੋਲੀਪਤਿਮਾਇਆ।
ਖਿਮਾ ਦੀ ਖਿੰਥਾ (ਖਫਨੀ) ਸਿਵਾਕੇ (ਗਲ ਪਾਈ ਹੈ ਅਰ ਪਤ ਕਹੀਏ ਪਰਮਾਰਥ ਦੀ) ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਜੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਖੇ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿਣੀ ਹੈ ਏਹੋ ਝੋਲੀ ਹੈ।
Forgiveness is the patched blanket and in the beggar's bad is the name of the Lord of maya (God).
ਪੈਰੀਪੈਪਾਖਾਕਬਿਭੂਤਬਣਾਇਆ।
(ਸਭ ਦੇ) ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਹੋਕੇ ਜੋ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਏਹੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ) ਬਿਭੂਤ ਹੈ (ਹੋਰ ਸੁਆਹ ਪਿੰਡੇ ਪੁਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਲਦੇ)।
Humbly touching of the feet ashes.
ਪਿਰਮਪਿਆਲਾਪਤਭੋਜਨੁਭਾਇਆ।
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦਾ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ (ਅਤੇ 'ਪਤ' ਕਹੀਏ) ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਭੋਜਨ ਭਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Cup of love is the bowl, which is filled with the food of affection.
ਡੰਡਾਗਿਆਨਵਿਚਾਰੁਦੂਤਸਧਾਇਆ।
ਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ (ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਏਹੋ) ਡੰਡਾ (ਹੱਥ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਇਸੇ ਕਰਕੇ) 'ਦੂਤ' (ਕਾਮਾਦਿਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਵੱਸ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਦੋਖ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ)
Knowledge is the staff with which the messengers of different propensities of mind are cultured.
ਸਹਜਗੁਫਾਸਤਿਸੰਗੁਸਮਾਧਿਸਮਾਇਆ।੧੬।
ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਦੀ ਗੁਫਾ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੈ (ਤੋਂ) ਸਤਿਸੰਗ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Holy congregation is the tranquil cave wherein the yogi resides in equipoise.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੭
ਸਿੰਙੀਸੁਰਤਿਵਿਸੇਖੁਸਬਦੁਵਜਾਇਆ।
(ਜੋਗੀ ਸਿੰਙੀ ਵਜਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ 'ਸੁਰਤ'ਕਹੀਏ) ਭਗਵੰਤ ਗਿਆਤ ਦੀ ਸਿੰਙੀ ਹੈ, ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਦਾ ਜੋ ਉਚਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਏਹੋ ਉਸਦਾ) ਵਿਸ਼ੇਖ ਵਾਜਾ (ਭਾਵ ਸ਼ਬਦ) ਹੈ।
The knowledge about the supreme is the trumpet (singi) of yogi and the recitation of the word is its playing upon.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਆਈਪੰਥੁਨਿਜਘਰੁਫਾਇਆ।
(ਪੁਨਾ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ (ਦਾ ਮੇਲ ਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ) ਆਈ ਪੰਥ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਸਰੂਪ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, 'ਨਿਜ ਘਰ') ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹੀ (ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਨੂੰ) ਲੱਭਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਭਟਕਦੇ “ਬਾਹਰਿ ਢੂਢਨ ਤੇ ਛੂਟਿ ਪਰੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਥਾ”)।
The best assembly of gurmukhs i.e. the Ai panth, could be attained by settling in one's own home.
ਆਦਿਪੁਰਖੁਆਦੇਸੁਅਲਖੁਲਖਾਇਆ।
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਨਿਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਇਸਦਾ ਫਲ) ਅਲਖ (ਵਸਤੂ) ਨੂੰ ਲਖ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Such people (Gurmukhs) bow before the primal Lord and have the sight of the invisible (God).
ਗੁਰਚੇਲੇਰਹਰਾਸਿਮਨੁਪਰਚਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਚੇਲੇ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸੱਚੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਪਰ ਪਰਚਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
The disciples and the Gurus have enrapt themselves in the mutual love for one another.
ਵੀਹਇਕੀਹਚੜ੍ਹਾਇਸਬਦੁਮਿਲਾਇਆ।੧੭।
(ਇਸ ਕਰਕੇ) ਵੀਹ ਇਕੀਹ (ਤੁਰੀਆ ਦੀ ਰੰਗਣ) ਚੜ੍ਹ ਗਈ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਕੀ ਹੈ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
Getting above of the worldly affairs, they meet (their ultimate destiny) the Lord.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੮
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਸੁਣਿਗੁਰਸਿਖਸਿਖੁਸਦਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ 'ਸਿਖ੍ਯਾ' (ਉਪਦੇਸ਼) ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਨੇ (ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਸਿਖ ਸਦਾਇਆ (ਭਾਵ ਨਿੰਮ੍ਰੀ ਭੂਤ ਹੋਏ)।
Having listened to the teaching of Guru,
ਗੁਰਸਿਖੀਗੁਰਸਿਖਸਿਖਸੁਣਾਇਆ।
(ਫੇਰ) ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖੀ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸਿਖਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਗੇ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ (ਭਾਵ ਦੀਵਾ ਜਗਾਕੇ ਪੜੋਪੇ ਹੇਠ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੁਕਾਇਆ, ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਨਣ ਕੀਤਾ)।
The Sikh of Guru has called other Sikhs.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਸੁਣਿਕਰਿਭਾਉਮੰਨਿਵਸਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਨਿਧ੍ਯਾਸਨ ਕਰ ਲੀਤਾ (ਉਹ ਕੀ ਹੈ?)
Adopting the teachings of the Guru,
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਗੁਰਸਿਖਗੁਰਸਿਖਭਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਦਾ (ਤੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਦਾ) ਭਾਣਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਲੱਗਾ ਹੈ।
The Sikh has recited the same to others.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਗੁਰਸਿਖਸੰਗੁਮੇਲਿਮਿਲਾਇਆ।
(ਉਹਨਾਂ) ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਲ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ (ਭਾਵ ਸਾਕ ਸਨਬੰਧ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਹੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹੋਰ ਗ਼ੈਰ ਕੌਮਾਂ ਸਰਵਰੀਆਂ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਧੱਕੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ)। (ਫਲ ਕੀ ਹੈ?)
The Sikhs of the Guru have liked the Sikhs and thus a Sikh has met the Sikhs.
ਚਉਪੜਿਸੋਲਹਸਾਰਜੁਗਜਿਣਿਆਇਆ।੧੮।
ਸੋਲਾਂ ਨਰਦਾਂ ਵਾਲੀ ਚਉਪੜ (ਦੀ ਬਾਜੀ) ਨੂੰ ਜੁਗ ਕਹੀਏ) ਜੋਟਾ (ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖ, ਵਕਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਤਾ ਹੀ) ਜਿੱਤਕੇ (ਘਰ) ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The pair of the Guru and the disciple has conquered the world-game of oblong dice.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੯
ਸਤਰੰਜਬਾਜੀਖੇਲੁਬਿਸਾਤਿਬਣਾਇਆ।
ਸ਼ਤਰੰਜ ਦੀ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਦੀ ਖੇਡ ਦਾ ('ਬਿਸਾਤ') ਚੌਕ ਅਥਵਾ ਕਪੜਾ (ਸਮੱਗ੍ਰੀ ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਨੇ ਰਚੀ ਹੈ।
The chess players have spread the chess mat.
ਹਾਥੀਘੋੜੇਰਥਪਿਆਦੇਆਇਆ।
(ਉਸ ਵਿਖੇ) 'ਹਾਥੀ' (ਗਿਆਨੀ), 'ਘੋੜੇ' (ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡੀ), 'ਰਥ' (ਉਪਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਾਲੇ), ਜਗ੍ਯਾਸੂ ਆਏ ਹਨ।
Elephants, chariots, horses and pedestrians have been brought in.
ਹੁਇਪਤਿਸਾਹੁਵਜੀਰਦੁਇਦਲਛਾਇਆ।
ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ) ਵਜ਼ੀਰ (ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹਨ) ਦੋ ਫੌਜਾਂ (ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਸਜ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਕੋਈ ਪਰਵਿਰਤ ਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਨਿਰਵਿਰਤ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
The groups of kings and ministers have gathered and are fighting tooth and nail.
ਹੋਇਗਡਾਵਡਿਜੋਧਜੁਧੁਮਚਾਇਆ।
ਆਪੋ ਵਿਚ ਜੋਧੇ ਖਹਿਕੇ ਘਮਸਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਗਲ ਕੀ ਇਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਥੋਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਵਧਣ ਦਾ ਉਪਾਵ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The groups of kings and ministers have gathered and are fighting tooth and nail.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਚਾਲਚਲਾਇਹਾਲਪੁਜਾਇਆ।
ਪਰੰਤੂ (ਸਭਨਾਂ ਸੂਰਮਿਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ('ਚਾਲ') ਸਿੱਕਾ ਤੋਰਕੇ 'ਹਾਲ' (ਵਰਤਮਾਨ ਦੀ ਮਨੁਖ ਦੇਹ) ਨੂੰ ਸਫਲ ਕਰ ਲੀਤਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰਕਾਰ ਅੱਗੇ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ):-
The Gurmukh by making a move has opened his heart before the Guru.
ਪਾਇਕਹੋਇਵਜੀਰੁਗੁਰਿਪਹੁਚਾਇਆ।੧੯।
ਵਜ਼ੀਰ (ਗੁਰੂ) ਦੇ ਜੇਹੜੇ (ਪਾਇਕ ਕਹੀਏ (ਪਿਆਦੇ ਅਥਵਾ) ਦਾਸ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਲ ਕਰਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ, (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਵਜ਼ੀਰ ਬਾਝ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦਾ ਮੇਲ ਕਠਨ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਪੰਚਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਰ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਬਾਝ ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਔਖੀ ਹੈ)।
The Guru has lifted pedestrian to the rank of minister and has placed him in the palace of success (and thus has saved the life game of the disciple).
ਪਉੜੀ੨੦
ਭੈਵਿਚਿਨਿਮਣਿਨਿਮਿਭੈਵਿਚਿਜਾਇਆ।
(ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਦੇ) ਡਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਜੀਵ (ਗਰਭ ਵਿਖੇ 'ਨਿੰਮਦਾ'=) ਟਿਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਰ ਭੈ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ।
Under the natural law (fear of lord), the jiva (creature) is conceived (by mother) and in the fear (law) he is born.
ਭੈਵਿਚਿਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਪੰਥਿਸਰਣੀਆਇਆ।
(ਫੇਰ) ਭੈ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੰਥ ਵਿਚ ਆਕੇ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੁ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੇ।
In fear he comes in the shelter of the way (panth) of Guru.
ਭੈਵਿਚਿਸੰਗਤਿਸਾਧਸਬਦੁਕਮਾਇਆ।
ਭੈ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਅਭ੍ਯਾਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
In fear while in the holy congregation he earns the merit of the True Word
ਭੈਵਿਚਿਜੀਵਨੁਮੁਕਤਿਭਾਣਾਭਾਇਆ।
ਭੈ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਅਰ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ) ਭਾਣਾ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
In fear (natural laws) he gets liberated in life and accepts the will of God happily.
ਭੈਵਿਚਿਜਨਮੁਸਵਾਰਿਸਹਜਿਸਮਾਇਆ।
ਭੈ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜਨਮ ਸਵਾਰਕੇ ਸ਼ਾਂਤਿ ਪਦ (ਅਥਵਾ ਸਰੂਪ) ਵਿਖੇ ਸਮਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
In fear he leaves away this life and merges in equipoise.
ਭੈਵਿਚਿਨਿਜਘਰਿਜਾਇਪੂਰਾਪਾਇਆ।੨੦।
ਭੈ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾਕੇ ਪੂਰਣ (ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ) ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
In fear he settles in his self and attains the supreme Perfect Being.
ਪਉੜੀ੨੧
ਗੁਰਪਰਮੇਸਰੁਜਾਣਿਸਰਣੀਆਇਆ।
ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ (ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ) ਜਾਣਕੇ (ਜੋ ਕੋਈ) ਗੁਰੂ (ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ) ਜੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ,
Those who, accepting Guru as God have sought shelter in the Lord.
ਗੁਰਚਰਣੀਚਿਤੁਲਾਇਨਚਲੈਚਲਾਇਆ।
ਓਹ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਟਿਕਾਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਚਲਾਇਆ (ਪਰੇਰਿਆ) ਹੋਇਆ ਚਲਾਇਮਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
Those who have put their heart at the feet of Lord, never become perishable.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿਨਿਹਚਲੁਹੋਇਨਿਜਪਦਪਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਸਿਖ੍ਯਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਅਚਲ ਹੋਕੇ ਸ੍ਵੈਸਰੂਪ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
They, getting deeply rooted in the wisdom of Guru, attain themselves.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਕਾਰਕਮਾਇਭਾਣਾਭਾਇਆ।
