ਜ਼ਿਤੋਪਸਕਿਰਾਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹੀਦਿਹਮ॥
(ਵਜ਼ੀਰ ਪੁੱਛਣ ਲਗੇ ਕਿ) ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਪਿਛੋਂ ਇਹ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਈਏ
(They asked), ‘Who could we endow the kingdom after you?
ਕਿਰਾਤਾਜਇਕਬਾਲਬਰਸਰਨਿਹਮ॥੧੦॥
ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪੀ ਤਾਜ ਕਿਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਪਰ ਰਖੀਏ ॥੧੦॥
‘And on whose head the crown be replaced and royal canopy entrusted?(10)
ਕਿਰਾਮਰਦਅਜ਼ਖ਼ਾਨਹਬੇਰੂੰਕੁਨਦ॥
ਕਿਸ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਘਰੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਕਢੀਏ
‘Whom should we get out of his house?
ਕਿਰਾਬਖ਼ਤਇਕਬਾਲਬਰਸਰਨਿਹਦ॥੧੧॥
ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਉਤੇ ਭਾਗਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਤਾਜ ਸਜਾਈਏ ॥੧੧॥
‘And who should be delegated the power to rule?’(11)
ਬਹੋਸ਼ਅੰਦਰਆਮਦਕੁਸ਼ਾਦੋਦੁਚਸ਼ਮ॥
(ਵਜ਼ੀਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ) ਹੋਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਆਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਖੋਲ੍ਹੀਆਂ।
When the King regained the cognisance, opened his both the eyes,
ਬਗੁਫ਼ਤਾਸੁਖ਼ਨਸ਼ਾਹਿਪੇਸ਼ੀਨਰਸਮ॥੧੨॥
(ਫਿਰ) ਪੁਰਾਤਨ (ਸ਼ਾਹੀ) ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਸੰਬੰਧੀ ਬੋਲ ਕਹੇ ॥੧੨॥
And uttered the words as per his protocol,(12)
ਨਪਾਓਨਦਸਤੋਨਚਸ਼ਮੋਜ਼ੁਬਾ॥
ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਪੈਰ, ਹੱਥ, ਅੱਖਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਜੀਭ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ।
‘The one who has no feet, no hands, no eyes and no tongue,
ਨਹੋਸ਼ੋਨਹਿੰਮਤਨਹੈਬਤਕਸਾ॥੧੩॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਸ਼ ਅਤੇ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
‘Neither shows cleverness, nor zeal, and possesses no fear.(13)
ਨਹਉਲੋਨਹਿੰਮਤਨਹੀਲਹਨਹੋਸ਼॥
ਜਿਸ ਪਾਸ ਧੜਕਦਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਦਿਲ ਨਹੀਂ, ਨਾ ਹੀ ਹਿੰਮਤ ਹੈ, ਨਾ ਹੀਲਾ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਹੋਸ਼ ਹੈ।
‘He has no anxiety, no wit, no lame excuses and no laziness.
ਨਬੀਨੀਨਬੀਨਾਯਗੀਹਰਦੁਗੋਸ਼॥੧੪॥
ਜਿਸ ਪਾਸ ਨਾ ਨਕ ਹੈ, ਨਾ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਦੋ ਕੰਨ ਹਨ ॥੧੪॥
‘Neither he can smell and see, nor can hear from both the ears.(14)
ਹਰਾਕਸਕਿਹਸਤਆਜ਼ਮਾਯਸ਼ਬਵਦ॥
ਜਿਸ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਪਾਸ ਪਰਖ ਕਰਨ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਗੁਣ ਹੋਣ,
‘One who has such eight traits,
ਵਜ਼ਾਦਉਰਦੀਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹਸ਼ਬਵਦ॥੧੫॥
ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਦੌਰ ਦੀ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਦੇ ਦਿਓ ॥੧੫॥
‘Enthrone him to run the righteous kingdom.’(15)
ਅਜਬਮਾਦਦਾਨਾਇਦਉਰਈਂਜਵਾਬ॥
(ਉਸ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਦਾ) ਜਵਾਬ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਜ਼ਮਾਨੇ ਦੇ ਅਕਲਮੰਦ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋਏ।
The wise man of the time was surprised to hear this.
ਸੁਖ਼ਨਬਾਜ਼ਦੀਗਰਕੁਨਦਬਾਸਵਾਬ॥੧੬॥
(ਫਿਰ) ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਭਲਿਆਈ ਦੇ ਹੋਰ ਬੋਲ ਕਹੇ ॥੧੬॥
To clarify he determined to ask again.(16)
ਬਕਿੰਗਸ਼ਦਰਆਮਦਦਿਰੰਗਸ਼ਗਿਰਿਫ਼ਤ॥
(ਸਾਰੇ ਵਜ਼ੀਰ) ਗਿਣਤੀ ਮਿਣਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਗਏ ਅਤੇ (ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਣ ਵਿਚ) ਦੇਰ ਹੋ ਗਈ।
He came in the court, pondered over thoroughly,
ਜਵਾਬੇਸੁਖ਼ਨਰਾਬਰੰਗਸ਼ਗਿਰਿਫ਼ਤ॥੧੭॥
ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਜਵਾਬ ਦੇਣ ਵਿਚ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਢਿਲ ਮਠ ਹੋ ਗਈ ॥੧੭॥
And tried to comprehend the (King’s) preposition.(17)
ਚਪੋਰਾਸਤਸ਼ਕਰਦਚਰਖੇਜ਼ੁਬਾ॥
(ਆਖ਼ਰ) ਉਹ ਜ਼ਬਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਜੇ ਖੱਬੇ ਘੁੰਮਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਇਆਂ
Walking left and right and moving around,
ਬਰਾਵੁਰਦਸੁਖ਼ਨੇਚੁਕੈਬਰਕਮਾ॥੧੮॥
ਕਮਾਨ ਉਤੇ ਰਖੇ ਤੀਰ ਵਾਂਗ ਬਾਹਰ ਲੈ ਆਏ ॥੧੮॥
Suddenly, he brought the words out like the arrows from the bow.(18)
ਕਿਏਸ਼ਾਹਿਹੁਸ਼ਿਯਾਰਆਜ਼ਾਦਮਗ਼ਜ਼॥
(ਕਹਿਣ ਲਗੇ) ਹੇ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਸਲਾਮਤ! ਤੁਸੀਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਮਝਦਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਆਜ਼ਾਦ ਦਿਮਾਗ਼ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੋ।
‘O, King! You are (man of) unconstrained thinking.
ਚਿਰਾਮੇਤੁਗੋਈਦਰੀਂਕਾਰਨਗ਼ਜ਼॥੧੯॥
ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਅਸਚਰਜ ਹੈ ॥੧੯॥
‘I am surprised at whatever you have remarked.(19)
ਕਸੇਰਾਸ਼ਵਦਕਾਰਈਦਰਜ਼ਮਾ॥
ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਜ਼ਮਾਨੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਾਰ-ਵਿਹਾਰ ਹੋਵੇ,
‘If there is any worldly assignment of such magnitude,
ਵਜ਼ਾਹਸਤਐਬਅਸਤਜ਼ਾਹਰਜਹਾ॥੨੦॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ (ਰਾਜ-ਅਧਿਕਾਰ) ਦੇ ਦੇਣਾ ਸਪਸ਼ਟ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਚ ਨੁਕਸਦਾਰ ਹੈ ॥੨੦॥
‘It is sin to leave that to the world to handle (itself).(20)
ਕਿਈਂਹਸਤਐਬੋਤੁਗੋਈਹੁਨਰ॥
ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਤਾਂ ਮਾੜੇ ਲੱਛਣ ਕਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਗੁਣ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹੋ
‘Oh, the King of the earth and the seas!
ਕਿਏਸ਼ਾਹਸ਼ਾਹਾਨਹਮਹਬਹਰਬਰ॥੨੧॥
ਹੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ! ॥੨੧॥
‘How do you call these eight drawbacks as the virtues?(21)
ਨਦਰਜੰਗਪੁਸ਼ਤੋਨਦੁਸ਼ਨਾਮਦਾਦ॥
(ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਨਾ ਜੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਪਿਠ ਵਿਖਾਈ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣ ਨੂੰ ਗਾਲ੍ਹੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।
‘Neither you have ever shown your back in the fight, nor abused any body.
ਨਅੰਗੁਸ਼ਤਬਰਹਰਫ਼ਦੁਸ਼ਮਨਨਿਹਾਦ॥੨੨॥
ਨਾ ਹੀ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣ ਨੇ (ਤੁਹਾਡੇ) ਲਿਖੇ ਉਤੇ ਉਂਗਲ ਰਖੀ ਹੈ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਲਿਖਤ ਨੂੰ ਰਦ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ) ॥੨੨॥
‘You have never even pointed a finger at (the enemies) writ.(22)
ਨਆਰਾਮਦੁਸ਼ਮਨਨਆਜ਼ਾਰਦੋਸਤ॥
(ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣ ਨੂੰ ਚੈਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਣ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਮਿਤਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
‘Neither you have afflicted the friends, nor the enemies, to enjoy the comforts.
ਜਵਾਬੇਗਦਾਰਾਅਦੂਰਾਬਪੋਸਤ॥੨੩॥
(ਘਰੋਂ) ਮੰਗਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਖ਼ਾਲੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਵੈਰੀ ਦੀ ਖਲ੍ਹ ਲਾਹ ਸੁਟੀ ਹੈ (ਅਰਥਾਤ-ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੋਧ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ) ॥੨੩॥
‘You never disappointed the seekers, nor let enemy unthrashed.(23)
ਨਵੀਸ਼ਿੰਦਹਰਾਜਾਨਹਰਫ਼ੋਨਿਹਦ॥
(ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਲਿਖਾਰੀ ਲਈ ਔਗੁਣ ਲਿਖਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਗੁੰਜਾਇਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਖੀ।
‘You never let a scribe to write the vices,
ਸੁਖ਼ਨਰਾਬਹਕਜਾਇਸ਼ਰਫ਼ੋਦਿਹਦ॥੨੪॥
ਹੱਕੀ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ ॥੨੪॥
‘And have always given prominence to the truth.(24)
ਨਉਸਤਾਦਰਾਦਾਦਜਾਏਸੁਖ਼ਨ॥
(ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਕਿਸੇ ਉਸਤਾਦ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਬਚਨ ਕਹਿਣ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤੀ।
‘You have never given a cause to your teacher to admonish you,
ਫ਼ਰਾਮੋਸ਼ਗੀਚੂੰਬਕਾਰੇਕੁਹਨ॥੨੫॥
(ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਮਰਯਾਦਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਭੁਲ ਗਏ ਹੋ ॥੨੫॥
‘Why have you forgotten your good deeds?(25)
ਬਬਦਮਸਲਿਹਤਕਸਨਦਾਦਨਦਿਗਰ॥
(ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਆਦਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਾੜੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਤੀ।
‘Be in your faculty. How can a person dispute
ਬਿਹਸਨਾਮਓਚੂੰਤੁਗੋਯਦਹੁਨਰ॥੨੬॥
(ਫਿਰ ਤੁਸੀਂ) ਔਗੁਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਣ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਕਹਿ ਦਿੱਤਾ ॥੨੬॥
the virtues associated with your name?(26)
ਨਬੀਨਦਦਿਗ਼ਰਜ਼ਨਬਚਸ਼ਮੋਖ਼ੁਦਸ਼॥
(ਉੱਤਰ ਵਿਚ ਬਾਦਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ) ਜੋ ਬੰਦਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੀ ਇਸਤਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਮਾੜੀ ਨਿਗਾਹ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ
‘Neither you have given disdainful looks to any woman,
ਨਬਦਕਾਰਕਸਕਰਦਨਜ਼ਰੇਬਦਸ਼॥੨੭॥
ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਉਤੇ ਭੈੜੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੭॥
‘Nor you have thought bad of any person’s work.(27)
ਨਜ਼ਰਕਰਦਕਸਬਰਨਹਰਫ਼ੇਹਰਾਮ॥
ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਦੁਰ-ਬਚਨਾਂ ਵਲ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ
‘You have not objected to the improper act of any man.
ਨਿਗਹਦਾਸ਼ਤਬਰਸ਼ੁਕਰਯਜ਼ਦਾਮੁਦਾਮ॥੨੮॥
ਅਤੇ ਜੋ ਸਦਾ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੁਕਰ ਕਰਨ ਉਤੇ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਟਿਕਾਈ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੨੮॥
‘You have been always referring to the God, Almighty, in gratitude.’(28)
ਨਜ਼ਰਰਾਬਬਦਕਾਰਦੀਗਰਬਬਸਤ॥
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਹੋਰ ਦੇ ਬੁਰੇ ਕੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਣ ਤੋਂ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਨੂੰ ਵਰਜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ,
(The King Replied) ‘Look consciously, the one who is blind,
ਸ਼ਨਾਸੀਤੁਤਹਕੀਕਓਕੋਰਹਸਤ॥੨੯॥
ਤਾਂ ਨਿਸਚੇ ਹੀ ਉਸ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਨ੍ਹਾ ਸਮਝੋ ॥੨੯॥
‘(He) is keeping his vision restrained from other’s vices.(29)
ਕਦਮਰਾਨਦਾਰਦਬਬਦਕਾਰਕਾਰ॥
(ਜੋ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ) ਮਾੜੇ ਕੰਮ ਲਈ ਕਦਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਧਾਉਂਦਾ
‘(The lame) has no feet to step into bad deeds, and, in the war,
ਨਦਰਜੰਗਪਸਪਾਉਪੁਸ਼ਤੇਬਰਾਰ॥੩੦॥
ਅਤੇ ਜੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਵੀ ਕਦਮ ਪਿਛੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਟਾਉਂਦਾ ॥੩੦॥
he does not turn back like thousand others.(30)
ਨਦਰਕਾਰਦੁਜ਼ਦੀਨਦਿਲਬਿਸ਼ਕਨੀ॥
(ਜੋ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ) ਚੋਰੀ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਦਿਲ ਦੁਖਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
‘Neither he goes to commit theft to cause distress to dissimilar,
ਨਖ਼ਾਨਹਖ਼ੁਰਮਬਾਜ਼ਨਹਰਹਜ਼ਨੀ॥੩੧॥
ਨਾ ਸ਼ਰਾਬੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਰਾਹ ਵਿਚ (ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ) ਲੁਟਦਾ ਹੈ ॥੩੧॥
‘Nor he goes out to take alcohol, nor does he execute cheating.(31)
ਬਨਾਕਸਦੁਆਏਨਗੋਯਦਸੁਖ਼ਨ॥
ਜੋ ਬਦ ਦੁਆ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦਾ
‘(The mute) does not spell out bad words,
ਬਖ਼ਾਹਸ਼ਖ਼ਰਾਸ਼ੀਨਜੋਈਸੁਖ਼ਨ॥੩੨॥
ਅਤੇ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਬੋਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਭਣ ਦਾ ਇਛੁਕ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ॥੩੨॥
‘And does not desire to use ill-inflicting words.(32)
ਬਬਦਕਾਰਕਸਦਰਨਦਾਦੰਦਪਾਇ॥
ਜੋ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਮਾੜੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਖਦਾ।
‘(He) does not interfere into other people affairs,
ਕਿਓਪਾਇਲੰਗਅਸਤੁਗੋਈਬਜਾਇ॥੩੩॥
ਉਹੀ ਸਹੀ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਲੰਗੜਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਏਗਾ ॥੩੩॥
‘It is true, when one has impaired (hands),(33)
