ੴਸਤਿਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

ਪਉੜੀ੧
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਚਾਨਾਉਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਜਾਣੀਐ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਲੋਕ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
Name of the true Guru is the truth, knowable only becoming gurmukh, the Guru orientated.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਸਚੁਥਾਉਸਬਦਿਵਖਾਣੀਐ।
(ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਹੀ ਸੱਚਾ ਥਾਉਂ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ 'ਸਬਦ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ' ਉਥੇ) ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦੀ ਚਰਚਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
The holy congregation is the only place where sabad-brahm,
ਦਰਗਹਸਚੁਨਿਆਉਜਲਦੁਧੁਛਾਣੀਐ।
(ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੀ) ਸਭਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਸੱਚਾ ਨਿਆਉਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਅੱਡੋ ਅੱਡ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The true justice is done and water is sifted from milk.
ਗੁਰਸਰਣੀਅਸਰਾਉਸੇਵਕਮਾਣੀਐ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ, (ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਦੀ ਫਾਸੀ ਕੱਟਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰੰਤੂ) ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਗ੍ਯਾਸੂ ਫਲ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Surrender before the Guru is the safest shelter, where through service (the merit) is earned.
ਸਬਦਸੁਰਤਿਸੁਣਿਗਾਉਅੰਦਰਿਆਣੀਐ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਸਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਤੇ ਗਾਂਵਦੇ (ਭਈ ਵਕਤਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਤਾ, ਜੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੋਤਾ ਮਿਲੇ ਤਾਂ ਵਕਤਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੇ) ਹਨ, ਆਪ ਮਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਨਿੱਧ੍ਯਾਸਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ,
Here, with full attention the Word is listened to, sung and embedded in the heart.
ਤਿਸੁਕੁਰਬਾਣੈਜਾਉਮਾਣੁਨਿਮਾਣੀਐ।੧।
ਅਜਿਹੇ (ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ) ਦੇ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਜੋ (ਮੇਰੇ ਜਿਹੇ) ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਅਗਲੀ ਪਉੜੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਦਾ ਵਰਨਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ:-
I am sacrifice unto such a Guru who bestows honour to the humble and the lowly.
ਪਉੜੀ੨
ਚਾਰਿਵਰਨਗੁਰਸਿਖਸੰਗਤਿਆਵਣਾ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਖੇ (ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ, ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ, ਸੂਦ, ਵੈਸ਼) ਚਾਰੇ ਵਰਣਾਂ (ਦੇ ਲੋਕ) ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
In the congregation of the Sikhs of the Guru, the people of all the varnas assemble.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮਾਰਗੁਵਿਖੁਅੰਤੁਨਪਾਵਣਾ।
(ਪਰੰਤੂ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਾਰਗ ਵਿਖਮ (ਕਰੜਾ) ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਆ ਸਕਦਾ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਤਤਿੱਖ੍ਯਾ ਸਹਾਰਨੀ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਥਵਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਰਗ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਉਲਾਂਘ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ)।
The way of the gurmukhs is difficult and its mystery cannot be understood.
ਤੁਲਿਨਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਇਖਕੀਰਤਨੁਗਾਵਣਾ।
(ਉਥੇ ਅਜਿਹਾ) ਕੀਰਤਨ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ) ਬਰਾਬਰ ਕਈ ਕਮਾਦਾਂ (ਦੇ ਰਸ) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਰੋਬਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ।
Even the sweet juice of sugarcane cannot be compared with the delight of kirtan, the melodious recitation of hymns.
ਚਾਰਿਪਦਾਰਥਭਿਖਭਿਖਾਰੀਪਾਵਣਾ।
ਚਾਰੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Here, the seeker gets all the four ideals of life i.e., dharma, arth, kam and moks.
ਲੇਖਅਲੇਖਅਲਿਖਸਬਦੁਕਮਾਵਣਾ।
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ) ਅਲਖ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕਮਾਇਆ ਹੈ (ਓਹ ਲੋਕ ਆਪ ਵੀ) ਲੇਖੇ ਥੋਂ ਅਲੇਖ ਹੋ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
Those who have cultivated the Word, have merged in the Lord and have liberated themselves from all the accounts.
ਸੁਝਨਿਭੂਤਭਵਿਖਨਆਪੁਜਣਾਵਣਾ।੨।
(ਜਿਹਾਕੁ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਭੂਤ ਭਵਿੱਖਤ (ਵਰਤਮਾਨ ਤਿੰਨੋ ਕਾਲਾਂ) ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਪਰੰਤੂ ਤ੍ਰਿਕਾਲ ਗਯਾਤਾ ਹੋਕੇ ਬੀ) ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਣਾਉਂਦੇ (ਭਾਵ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ)।
They see through all the ages and yet do not put themselves above others.
ਪਉੜੀ੩
ਆਦਿਪੁਰਖਆਦੇਸਿਅਲਖੁਲਖਾਇਆ।
ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ (ਯਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ) ਨੂੰ (ਮੇਰੀ) ਨਮਸ਼ਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਅਲਖ (ਵਸਤੂ) ਦੇ ਲਖਣਹਾਰੇ ਹਨ।
I bow before the eternal Lord who by his own grace shows his invisible form (in all the creatures).
ਅਨਹਦੁਸਬਦੁਅਵੇਸਿਅਘੜੁਘੜਾਇਆ।
(ਅਨਹਦ) ਇਕ ਰਸ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ (ਅਵੇਸਿ=ਸਥਾਨ) ਹਨ, ਅਘੜ (ਜੋ ਮਨ ਹੈ ਉਸ) ਦੇ ਘੜਨਹਾਰੇ ਹਨ।
He gracefully makes the unstruck melody enter into the unchiselled mind and refines it.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਪਰਵੇਸਿਅਪਿਓਪੀਆਇਆ।
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਜੋ (ਜਗਿਆਸੂ) ਪਰਵੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪਿਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
He, in the company of the saints, makes one drink the nectar, which otherwise is not easy to digest.
ਗੁਰਪੂਰੇਉਪਦੇਸਿਸਚੁਦਿੜਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਪੁਰੇ (ਦਾ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਹੋਯਾ ਹੈ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ) ਸੱਚ ਨੂੰ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
Those who have received the teachings of the perfect, remain steadfast on truth.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਭੂਪਤਿਵੇਸਿਨਵਿਆਪੈਮਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲੋਕ ਰਾਜੇ ਦਾ ਸਰੂਪ ਹਨ ਪਰੰਤੂ ਮਾਯਾ ਤੋਂ ਅਲੇਪ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
In fact, the gurmukhs are the kings but they remain away from maya.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੇਬਿਸਨਮਹੇਸਨਦਰਸਨੁਪਾਇਆ।੩।
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ, ਸ਼ਿਵ (ਤਿੰਨੇ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਬੀ) ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ।
Brahma, Visnu and Mahesa cannot have the sight of the Lord (but the gurmukhs have the same)
ਪਉੜੀ੪
ਬਿਸਨੈਦਸਅਵਤਾਰਨਾਵਗਣਾਇਆ।
ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ ਨੇ ਦਸ ਅਵਤਾਰ (ਧਾਰਕੇ) ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਗਣਾਇਆ (ਭਾਵ, ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਹੈ, 'ਜੋ ਸਾਰੇ ਵ੍ਯਾਪਕ ਹੋਵੇ', ਫੇਰ ਰਾਖਸ਼ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ਼ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਦਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਘਾਤ ਕੀਤਾ, ਅਥਵਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਹੀ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਾਕੇ ਪਾਲਨਾਦਿ ਸਤੋਗੁਣ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਿਹਾ)।
Visnu incarnated ten times and established his names.
ਕਰਿਕਰਿਅਸੁਰਸੰਘਾਰਵਾਦੁਵਧਾਇਆ।
ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਕੰਸਾਦਿਕ) ਰਾਖਸ਼ਾਂ ਦਾ ਸੰਘਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ, ਅਤੇ ਝਗੜਾ ਵਧਾਇਆ।
Destroying the demons he increased the conflicts.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈਵੇਦਵੀਚਾਰਿਆਖਿਸੁਣਾਇਆ।
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਂ ਨੇ ਵੇਦਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਆਖਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ।
Brahma thoughtfully recited the four Vedas;
ਮਨਅੰਦਰਿਅਹੰਕਾਰੁਜਗਤੁਉਪਾਇਆ।
ਪਰ ਮਨ ਵਿਖੇ (ਇਸ) ਹੰਕਾਰ (ਵਿਚ ਵਸਿਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ) ਜਗਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, (ਸੋ ਰਜੋਗੁਣ ਵਿਖੇ ਵਸਿਆ ਰਿਹਾ)।
But created the universe out of his ego.
ਮਹਾਦੇਉਲਾਇਤਾਰਤਾਮਸੁਤਾਇਆ।
ਸ਼ਿਵ ਤਾਰ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਤਮੋ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਖੇ ਤੱਤਾ ਹੀ ਰਿਹਾ, (ਸ਼ਾਂਤਿ ਨਾ ਆਈ)।
Siva being engrossed in tamas always remained vexed and angry.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮੋਖਦੁਆਰਆਪੁਗਵਾਇਆ।੪।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ਾ ਹਨ, (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ) ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਗਵਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ।
Only gurmukhs, the Guru orientated, forswearing their ego reach the door of liberation.
ਪਉੜੀ੫
ਨਾਰਦਮੁਨੀਅਖਾਇਗਲਸੁਣਾਇਆ।
ਨਾਰਦ ਨੇ (ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) 'ਮੁਨੀ' (ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਦਾ ਮਨਨਸ਼ੀਲ) ਕਹਾ ਕੇ ਗਲ ਹੀ ਸੁਣਾਈ (ਭਾਵ ਗੱਪ ਹੀ ਮਾਰੀ, ਸੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ) (ਅਥਵਾ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਨ ਲਈ ਹੀ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਇਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣਕੇ)।
Even being an ascetic, Narad merely talked (of here and there).
ਲਾਇਤਬਾਰੀਖਾਇਚੁਗਲੁਸਦਾਇਆ।
ਚੁਗਲੀ ਵੱਟਣ ਨਾਲ ਬੇਇਤਬਾਰਾ ਹੀ ਸਦਾਇਆ (ਭਾਵ ਰਾਖਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਪਾਸ ਤ ਉਨਾਂ ਦੀਆ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਰਾਖਸ਼ਾਂ ਪਾਸ ਆਖਕੇ ਘੋਲ ਮਚਾਏ, ਨਾਰਦ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਐਸਾ ਹੀ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Being a backbiter, he popularised himself only as a tell-tale.
ਸਨਕਾਦਿਕਦਰਿਜਾਇਤਾਮਸੁਆਇਆ।
ਜਦ ਸਨਕਾਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਪਰ ਗਿਆ ਉਥੇ ਤਮੋਗੁਨ (ਰੋਹ ਭਰਿਆ) ਹੋ ਗਿਆ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਦੀ ਆਗ੍ਯਾ ਬਾਝ ਅੰਦਰ ਜਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਸਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੋਹੇ ਲਾਖਾਂ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਰਾਖਸ਼ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਸਰਾਪ ਦੇ ਬੈਠਾ, ਫੇਰ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਉਧਾਰ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਰਾਮ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾਦਿਕ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਧਾਰਨੇ ਪਏ, ਐਸਾ ਨਾਰਦ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੀ ਮੰਨਦ
Sanak et al. got angry when they having gone to Visnu were not allowed entry by the doorkeepers.
ਦਸਅਵਤਾਰਕਰਾਇਜਨਮੁਗਲਾਇਆ।
(ਵਿਸ਼ਨੂੰ ਦੇ) ਦਸ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਕਰਾਕੇ ਜਨਮ ਗਾਲ ਦਿੱਤਾ, (ਭਾਵ ਲੜਾਈਆਂ ਤੇ ਘੋਲਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਮਾਂ ਬਿਤੀਤ ਕਰਾਇਆ)।
They forced Visnu to undergo ten incarnations and thus the peaceful life of Visnu got tormented.
ਜਿਨਿਸੁਕੁਜਣਿਆਮਾਇਦੁਖੁਸਹਾਇਆ।
ਜਿਸ ਮਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਨੂੰ ਖਾ ਕੇ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਸ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਹਾਰਨਾ ਪਿਆ।
The mother who gave birth to Sukdev was caused to suffer by him by remaining undelivered by the mother for twelve years.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲਖਾਇਅਜਰੁਜਰਾਇਆ।੫।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਨੂੰ ਖਾਕੇ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਸ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਕੇ) 'ਅਜਰ' ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਜਰਿਆ ਹੈ।
Only gurmukhs tasting the fruit of supreme joy have endured the unendurable (name of the Lord).
ਪਉੜੀ੬
ਧਰਤੀਨੀਵੀਂਹੋਇਚਰਣਚਿਤੁਲਾਇਆ।
ਧਰਤੀ ਨੇ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਚਿਤ ਲਾਇਆ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ ਨੀਚ ਊਚ ਹਰ ਏਕ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਤ ਦੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਹੇਠ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ। ਤਥਾ:- ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲੋਕ ਭੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਾਙੂ ਨਿਮਰਤਾ ਧਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The earth becoming lowly concentrated on the feet (of Lord).
ਚਰਣਕਵਲਰਸੁਭੋਇਆਪੁਗਵਾਇਆ।
ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਗਵਾਕੇ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਸ ਵਿਖੇ ਭਿਜੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Being one with the joy of the lotus feet, it divested itself of the ego.
ਚਰਣਰੇਣੁਤਿਹੁਲੋਇਇਛਇਛਾਇਆ।
ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜੀ ਬਣੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਧੂੜੀ ਦੀ) ਇੱਛਾ ਨੂੰ (ਸਾਰੇ) ਲੋਚਦੇ ਹਨ।
It is that dust of the feet, which is desired by the three worlds.
ਧੀਰਜੁਧਰਮੁਜਮੋਇਸੰਤੋਖੁਸਮਾਇਆ।
ਧੀਰਜ ਦਾ ਧਰਮ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਤੋਖ (ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਖੇ) ਸਮਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਕੋਈ ਪੁਟੇ ਕੋਈ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਭ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੈ)।
Fortitude and dutifulness added to it, the contentment is the basis of all.
ਜੀਵਣੁਜਗਤੁਪਰੋਇਰਿਜਕੁਪੁਜਾਇਆ।
ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਜੁਗਤੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਖਕੇ ਸਭ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਜਕ ਪੁਚਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਲੋਕ ਪੁੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਹ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਵਣ ਅੰਨਾਦਿਕ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਅਥਵਾ ਜੀਵਣ ਕਹੀਏ ਜਲ ਦਾ ਦਾਨ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ)।
It, considering the way of life of every creature, offers livelihood to all.
ਮੰਨੈਹੁਕਮੁਰਜਾਇਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਜਾਇਆ।੬।
(ਰਜਾਈ) ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਜੇਹੜੇ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਧਰਤੀ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ਉਕਤ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਯੁਕਤ ਹੋਕੇ ਭਾਣੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹਨ ਓਹ) ਜਨਮੇ ਹਨ।
In accordance to the divine will, it behaves like a gurmukh does.
ਪਉੜੀ੭
ਪਾਣੀਧਰਤੀਵਿਚਿਧਰਤਿਵਿਚਿਪਾਣੀਐ।
ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੈ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਹੈ (ਅਰ ਸੀਤਲ ਸੁਭਾਅ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।

ਨੀਚਹੁਨੀਚਨਹਿਚਨਿਰਮਲਜਾਣੀਐ।
ਨੀਵਿਆਂ ਥੋਂ ਨੀਵਾਂ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਅੜੀ ਜਾਂ) ਹਠ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਫੇਰ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹੀ ਜਾਣੀਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਘੱਟਾ ਪੈ ਜਾਵੇ ਫੇਰ ਨਿੱਤਰਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਗੁਣ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ)
Water has no hesitation in going low and lower; it is rather considered more pure.
ਸਹਦਾਬਾਹਲੀਖਿਚਨਿਵੈਨੀਵਾਣੀਐ।
ਵੱਡੀ ਖਿੱਚ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਆਕਰਖਣ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਨਿਵਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ) (ਤੇ ਸਦਾ) ਨਿਵਾਣਾ ਨੂੰ ਰੁਖ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
To flow down, water bears the concussion of the gravitational force but still likes to go lower.
ਮਨਮੇਲੀਘੁਲਮਿਚਸਭਰੰਗਮਾਣੀਐ।
ਮਨ ਮੇਲੀ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿ 'ਘੁਲ ਮਿਚ' ਕਹੀਏ) ਮਿਲ ਗਿਲਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਲਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਲਾਲ, ਚਿੱਟੇ ਨਾਲ ਚਿੱਟਾ, ਪੀਲੇ ਨਾਲ ਪੀਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
It absorbs in everybody and enjoys with one and all.
ਵਿਛੁੜੈਨਾਹਿਵਿਰਚਿਦਰਿਪਰਵਾਣੀਐ।
(ਇਕ ਵਾਰ 'ਵਿਰਚਿ' ਕਹੀਏ) ਰਚਕੇ (ਸਿੰਜਰਕੇ) ਫੇਰ ਅੱਡ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ (ਇਸੇ ਕਰਕੇ) ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਖੇ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣਿਕ ਹੈ (ਯਥਾ:- “ਪਹਿਲਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਜੀਉ ਹੈ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ”)।
Meeting once it does not go apart and hence it is acceptable in the court of the Lord.
ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰਸਰਚਿਭਗਤਿਨੀਸਾਣੀਐ।੭।
(ਜੋ) ਪਰੋਪਕਾਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, (ਏਹੋ) ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨੀ ਹੈ।
The devoted persons (bhagats) are identified through their service (to the mankind)
ਪਉੜੀ੮
ਧਰਤੀਉਤੈਰੁਖਸਿਰਤਲਵਾਇਆ।
ਧਰਤੀ ਉਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ ਉਲਟਾ ਹੋਕੇ (ਸਿਰ ਹੇਠ ਤੇ ਪੈਰ ਉਪੱਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉੱਗਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The tree on the earth has their heads down towards the bottom.
ਆਪਿਸਹੰਦੇਦੁਖਜਗੁਵਰੁਸਾਇਆ।
ਆਪ ਕਸ਼ਟ (ਧੁਪ ਛਾਉਂ ਦਾ) ਸਹਾਰਕੇ ਜਗ ਦਾ ਵਰਸਾਉ (ਪਰੋਪਕਾਰ) ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
They endure suffering themselves but pour happiness on the world.
ਫਲਦੇਲਾਹਨਿਭੁਖਵਟਵਗਾਇਆ।
ਵੱਟਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਰਿਆਂ ਬੀ ਫਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਕੇ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ) ਭੁੱਖ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Even on being stoned, they offer fruits and quench our hunger.
ਛਾਵਘਣੀਬਹਿਸੁਖਮਨੁਪਰਚਾਇਆ।
ਸੰਘਣੀ ਛਾਉਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਚਾਕੇ ਵੱਡਾ ਸੁਖ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Their shadow is so thick that the mind (and body) enjoys peace.
ਵਢਨਿਆਇਮਨੁਖਆਪੁਤਛਾਇਆ।
ਜਦ ਕੋਈ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੱਢਣ ਆਵੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ (ਤਛਾਉਂਦੇ) ਕਟਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਗੱਲ ਕੀ ਭਾਣੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੰਤੁਸ਼ਟ ਹਨ)।
If someone cuts them, they offer to be sawed.
ਵਿਰਲੇਹੀਸਨਮੁਖਭਾਣਾਭਾਇਆ।੮।
(ਤਿਵੇਂ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਦੇ) ਭਾਣੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਰਹਿਕੇ (ਜੋ ਬੇਮੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੇ, ਓਹ ਲੋਕ) ਵਿਰਲੇ ਹੀ ਹਨ।
Rare are the persons like tree who accept the will of Lord.
ਪਉੜੀ੯
ਰੁਖਹੁਘਰਛਾਵਾਇਥੰਮ੍ਹਥਮਾਇਆ।
ਬ੍ਰਿਛ ਥੋਂ ਘਰ (ਕੜੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਛਤੀਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਛਤਾਕੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਥੰਮ੍ਹਿਆ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
From tree are made houses and pillars.
ਸਿਰਿਕਰਵਤੁਧਰਾਇਬੇੜਘੜਾਇਆ।
ਸਿਰ ਪਰ ਆਰਾ ਧਰਾ ਕੇ (ਬ੍ਰਿਛ ਕੱਟ ਕੇ ਤਖਤੇ ਚੀਰ ਕੇ) ਬੇੜਾ ਘੜਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
A tree getting sawed helps to make boat.
ਲੋਹੇਨਾਲਿਜੜਾਇਪੂਰਤਰਾਇਆ।
ਲੋਹੇ ਨਾਲ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਜੜਾਕੇ (ਉਹ ਬੇੜਾ ਪੂਰਾਂ ਦੇ) ਪੂਰ ਤਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Then adding iron (nails) to it, it gets people float on water.
ਲਖਲਹਰੀਦਰੀਆਇਪਾਰਿਲੰਘਾਇਆ।
ਦਰੀਆਵਾਂ (ਜਾਂ ਸਮੁੰਦਰਾਂ) ਦੀਆਂ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਥੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਲੰਘਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
In spite of the myriads of waves of river, it takes people across.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂਭੈਭਾਇਸਬਦੁਕਮਾਇਆ।
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਭੈ ਅਤੇ (ਭਾਇ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਦੇ ਬੇੜੇ ਨੂੰ) ਕਮਾਇਆ ਹੈ।
Likewise, the Sikhs of the Guru, in love and fear of the Lord, practise the Word.
ਇਕਸਪਿਛੈਲਾਇਲਖਛੁਡਾਇਆ।੯।
(ਉਹਨਾਂ) ਇਕ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੇ (ਬੇੜੇ) ਪਰ ਚੜ੍ਹਾ ਕੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ (ਡੁਬਣ ਦੇ ਦੁਖਾਂ ਥੋਂ) ਛੁਡਾ ਦਿਤਾ ਹੈ।
They make people follow the one Lord and get them liberated from the bondages of transmigration.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੦
ਘਾਣੀਤਿਲੁਪੀੜਾਇਤੇਲੁਕਢਾਇਆ।
ਤਿਲ ਨੇ (ਕੋਲੂ ਦੀ) ਘਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ (ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਪਿੜਵਾ ਤੇਲ ਕਢਵਾਇਆ।
Sesame gets crushed in the oil press and gives oil.
ਦੀਵੈਤੇਲੁਜਲਾਇਅਨ੍ਹੇਰੁਗਵਾਇਆ।
(ਫੇਰ ਤੇਲ ਨੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਦੀਵੇ ਵਿਚ ਸੜਵਾਕੇ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ) ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤਾ।
The oil burns in the lamp and the darkness is dispelled.
ਮਸੁਮਸਵਾਣੀਪਾਇਸਬਦੁਲਿਖਾਇਆ।
(ਉਸ ਤੇਲ ਨੇ) (ਸਿਆਹੀ ਬਣਕੇ) ਦੁਆਤ ਵਿਚ ਪੈਕੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਲਿਖਵਾਇਆ।
The soot of the lamp becomes ink and the same oil reaches the ink-pot with whose help is written the Word of the Guru.
ਸੁਣਿਸਿਖਿਲਿਖਿਲਿਖਾਇਅਲੇਖੁਸੁਣਾਇਆ।
(ਉਸ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੁਣਕੇ ਅਰ ਲਿਖ ਲਿਖਾਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ (ਦੇ ਨਾਮ) ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ।
By listening to, writing, learning and getting written the words, the imperceptible Lord is eulogised.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਆਪੁਗਵਾਇਸਬਦੁਕਮਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰਮਖਾਂ ਨੇ (ਤਿਲ ਵਾਂਙੂ ਤਤਿੱਖ੍ਯਾ ਸਹਾਰੀ) ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਗਵਾਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦਾ ਅਭ੍ਯਾਸ ਕੀਤਾ, (ਤੇਲ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਧੇਰ ਦੂਰ ਕੀਤਾ)।
The gurmukhs, losing their sense of ego, practise the Word.
ਗਿਆਨਅੰਜਨਲਿਵਲਾਇਸਹਜਿਸਮਾਇਆ।੧੦।
ਗਿਆਨ (ਰੂਪੀ) ਸੁਰਮੇ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਕੇ (ਅਖੰਡ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਕੇ) ਸਹਿਜ (ਪਦ ਵਿਖੇ) ਸਮਾ ਗਏ।
And using the collyrium of knowledge and concentration immerses in equanimity.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੧
ਦੁਧੁਦੇਇਖੜੁਖਾਇਨਆਪੁਗਣਾਇਆ।
(ਗਊ ਨੂੰ) ਘਾਹ ਖਾਕੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਫਿਰ) ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਣਾਉਂਦੀ (ਗ਼ਰੀਬ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ)।
Standing into a pit they yield milk and do not pose to be counted, i.e. the animals do not have the ego.
ਦੁਧਹੁਦਹੀਜਮਾਇਘਿਉਨਿਪਜਾਇਆ।
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਧ ਥੋਂ ਦਹੀਂ ਜਮਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਰਿੜਕ ਕੇ) ਘਿਉ ਕੱਢੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
Milk is converted into curd and the butter comes thereof.
ਗੋਹਾਮੂਤੁਲਿੰਬਾਇਪੂਜਕਰਾਇਆ।
ਗੋਹੇ ਨਾਲ ਲੇਪਣ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਮੂਤਰ ਥੋਂ (ਪੰਚਾਂਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਣਾ) (ਹਿੰਦੂ ਲੋਕ) ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਅਗੇ ਤਿੰਨ ਤੁਕਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ)।
With their dung and urine, the earth is plastered to offer worship;
ਛਤੀਹਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁਖਾਇਕੁਚੀਲਕਰਾਇਆ।
(ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਛੱਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਖਾਕੇ 'ਕੁਚੀਲ' ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
But while eating variety of goods man turns them into abominable faeces, useless for any purpose.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਚਲਿਜਾਇਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਧਿਆਇਆ।
(ਪਰਤੂੰ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਘਰੋਂ ਚੱਲਕੇ ਜਾ ਪਹੁੰਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਰ ਉਥੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਅਰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ਜੀ) ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Those who have worshipped Lord in the holy congregation, their life is blessed and successful.
ਸਫਲਜਨਮੁਜਗਿਆਇਸੁਖਫਲਪਾਇਆ।੧੧।
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਜਗ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਣਾ ਸਫਲ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ, (ਸ੍ਵੈ ਸਰੂਪਾਨੰਦ ਨੂੰ ਧਾਰਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ)।
Only they get the fruit of life on earth.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੨
ਦੁਖਸਹੈਕਪਾਹਿਭਾਣਾਭਾਇਆ।
ਕਪਾਹ (ਵੱਡਾ) ਦੁਖ ਸਹਾਰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਮਾਨੋਂ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ) ਭਾਣਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਸੁ।
Accepting the will of the Lord, cotton suffers a lot.
ਵੇਲਣਿਵੇਲਵਿਲਾਇਤੁੰਬਿਤੁੰਬਾਇਆ।
ਵੇਲਣੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਪਾਕੇ ਵੜੇਵਾਂ ਅੱਡ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ) ਤੂੰਬਾ ਤੂੰਬਾ (ਰੱਤੀ ਰੱਤੀ) ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Having been ginned through the roller, it is carded.
ਪਿੰਞਣਿਪਿੰਜਫਿਰਾਇਸੂਤੁਕਤਾਇਆ।
ਪਿੰਣ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੱਢਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਤੇ ਫੇਰ ਚਰਖਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ) ਸੂਤ ਕੱਤੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
Having carded it, its yarn is spun.
ਨਲੀਜੁਲਾਹੇਵਾਹਿਚੀਰੁਵੁਣਾਇਆ।
ਜੁਲਾਹਾ ਨਲੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਪਾਕੇ ਕੱਪੜਾ ਉਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
Then the weaver with the help of his reed, eaves it into cloth.
ਖੁੰਬਚੜਾਇਨਿਬਾਹਿਨੀਰਿਧੁਵਾਇਆ।
(ਧੋਬੀ ਲੋਕ) ਖੁੰਬ ਪੁਰ ਚੜਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਫੇਰ) ਵਗਦੇ ਨਦੀ ਨਾਲਿਆਂ ਪਰ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਫ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The washerman puts that cloth into his boiling cauldron and then washes it on a stream.
ਪੈਨ੍ਹਿਸਾਹਿਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਿਸਭਾਸੁਹਾਇਆ।੧੨।
ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਅਰ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਲੋਕ ਕਪੜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਨਕੇ ਸਭਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਸੁਭਾਇਮਾਨ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Putting on the same clothes, the rich and the kings adorn the assemblies.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੩
ਜਾਣੁਮਜੀਠੈਰੰਗੁਆਪੁਪੀਹਾਇਆ।
ਦੇਖੋ ਮਜੀਠ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਨੇ (ਪਹਿਲੇ) ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ (ਚੱਕੀ ਵਿਖੇ) ਪਿਸਾਇਆ।
Madder (Rubia munjista) knowing very well gets itself grinded.
ਕਦੇਨਛਡੈਸੰਗੁਬਣਤਬਣਾਇਆ।
(ਭਾਵੇਂ ਰੂਪ ਬਦਲਿਆ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਰੰਗ ਦਾ) ਸੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਛਡਿਆ, ਏਹ ਬਣਤ ਬਣੀ ਹੀ ਰਹੀ।
Its character is such that it never deserts the clothes.
ਕਟਿਕਮਾਦੁਨਿਸੰਗੁਆਪੁਪੀੜਾਇਆ।
(ਅਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਕਮਾਦ ਦਾ ਹਾਲ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਕਮਾਦ ਟੋਟੇ ਹੋ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਨਿਸ਼ੰਗ ਹੋਕੇ (ਰਹੁ ਦੇ ਵੇਲਣਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ) ਪਿੜਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Likewise, the sugarcane also care freely gets itself crushed.
ਕਰੈਨਮਨਰਸਭੰਗੁਅਮਿਓਚੁਆਇਆ।
ਮਨ ਦਾ ਰਸ ਭੰਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ (ਵਰਗਾ ਮਿੱਠਾ ਰਸ) ਚੁਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Without leaving away its sweetness offers the taste of nectar.
ਗੁੜੁਸਕਰਖੰਡਅਚੰਗੁਭੋਗਭੁਗਾਇਆ।
(ਰਹੁ ਥੋਂ) ਗੁੜ ਸ਼ੱਕਰ ਅਰ ਖੰਡ (ਅਚੰਗ) ਜਿਸਥੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਚੰਗਾ ਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ (ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਮਿੱਠੇ) ਭੋਗ ਭੁਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
It produces jaggery, sugar, treacle molasses many relishable items.
ਸਾਧਨਮੋੜਨਅੰਗੁਜਗੁਪਰਚਾਇਆ।੧੩।
(ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਸਾਧ ਲੋਕ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਰੀਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੋੜਦੇ ਜਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Similarly, the saints also do not abstain from the service of mankind, and give happiness to all.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੪
ਲੋਹਾਆਰ੍ਹਣਿਪਾਇਤਾਵਣਿਤਾਇਆ।
ਲੋਹਾ ਲੋਹਾਰ ਦੀ ਭੱਠੀ ਵਿਚ ਪਾ ਕੇ ਅੱਗ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਕੇ ਅੱਗ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Putting iron into the furnance the iron is heated.
ਘਣਅਹਰਣਿਹਣਵਾਇਦੁਖੁਸਹਾਇਆ।
ਹਥੌੜੇ ਨਾਲ ਲੋਹੇ ਦੀ ਅਹਿਰਣ ਉਤੇ ('ਅਣਵਾਇ' ਕਹੀਏ) ਸੱਟਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਦੁਖ ਦੇਈਦਾ ਹੈ।
Then it is put on the anvil where it bears the strokes of hammer.
ਆਰਸੀਆਘੜਵਾਇਮੁਲੁਕਰਾਇਆ।
ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ੀਆਂ (ਵਾਂਗੂ) ਪਤਲਾ ਘੜਾਕੇ ਮੁੱਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Making it clear like glass, its value is set.
ਖਹੁਰੀਸਾਣਧਰਾਇਅੰਗੁਹਛਾਇਆ।
ਖੁਰਦਰੀ ਸਾਣ ਉਤੇ ਰੱਖਕੇ (ਤਲਵਾਰਾਂ, ਕਾਚੂ, ਕੈਂਚੀ ਆਦਿ ਚੰਗੇ 'ਅੰਗ') ਔਜ਼ਾਰ ਬਣਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Now keeping it (or those articles) in the saw-dust etc. it is left for getting clean.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਆਪੁਗਵਾਇਆਪੁਦਿਖਾਇਆ।੧੪।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਗਵਾਕੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਹੈ, (ਤਥਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਮਨ ਰੂਪੀ ਲੋਹੇ ਨੂੰ ਜਪ ਜਪਾਦਿਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਤਾਕੇ ਫੇਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਅਭਿਆਸ ਰੂਪ ਹਥੌੜੇ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੱਟਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ੇ ਵਾਂਙੂੰ ਸੁੱਧ ਕੀਤਾ, ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਗੁਵਾਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਾ ਕਰਨੀ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ਹੈ।

ਚੰਗਾਰੁਖੁਵਢਾਇਰਬਾਬੁਘੜਾਇਆ।
ਚੰਗੀ ਜਾਤ (ਤੁਣ ਆਦਿ) ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ ਵਢਾਕੇ ਰਬਾਬ ਘੜਾਇਆ।
A handsome tree got cut itself and got manufactured into a rebeck.
ਛੇਲੀਹੋਇਕੁਹਾਇਮਾਸੁਵੰਡਾਇਆ।
ਛੋਟੀ ਬੱਕਰੀ ਨੇ ਹੋਕੇ (ਅਪਣਾ ਆਪ) ਕੁਹਾਕੇ ਮਾਸ ਵੰਡਵਾਇਆ।
A young goat underwent the mortification of getting killed itself; it distributed its meat among the meat-eaters.
ਆਂਦ੍ਰਹੁਤਾਰਬਣਾਇਚੰਮਿਮੜ੍ਹਾਇਆ।
(ਆਪਣੀਆਂ) ਆਂਦਰਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਤਾਰਾਂ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਚੰਮ (ਨਾਲ ਰਬਾਬ) ਮੜ੍ਹਿਆ।
Its intestines were made into gut and the skin was mounted (on drum) and stitched.

(ਰਬਾਬ ਵਿਚ ਕਈ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ 'ਰੰਗ') ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਰੇ ਰਾਗ ਕੱਢਕੇ (ਉਸ ਨਾਲ) ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਸੁਣਾਏ।
It creates the melody of Raag as the Shabad is heard.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਪੁਰਖੁਧਿਆਇਸਹਜਿਸਮਾਇਆ।੧੫।
(ਐਉਂ ਰਬਾਬ ਵਾਂਙੂ ਦੁਖ ਤੇ ਤਾਉ ਸਹਾਰਕੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੂੰ ਚਿੰਤਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਲੋਕ) 'ਸਹਜ ਪਦ' ਵਿਖੇ ਸਮਾਏ (ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਖੇ ਮਗਨ ਹੋ ਗਏ)।
Any one who worships true Guru, the God, gets absorbed into the equanimity.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੬
ਚੰਨਣੁਰੁਖੁਉਪਾਇਵਣਖੰਡਿਰਖਿਆ।
(ਰੱਬ ਨੇ) ਚੰਦਨ ਦਾ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ ਉਤਪਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੰਘਣੇ ਬਣ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਖਿਆ ਹੈ।
God created the sandal tree and kept it in the forest.
ਪਵਣੁਗਵਣੁਕਰਿਜਾਇਅਲਖੁਨਲਖਿਆ।
ਪੌਣ (ਉਸ ਵਿਚ) ਗਮਨ ਕਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ=ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਥੋਂ ਮਲੂਮ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਬਾਵਨ ਚੰਦਨ ਦੀ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਹੈ) ਨਹੀ ਤਾਂ (ਆਪ) ਅਲਖ ਹੈ (ਕੋਈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਲਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ।
The breeze moves around the sandal but does not understand the imperceptible (nature of the tree).
ਵਾਸੂਬਿਰਖਬੁਹਾਇਸਚੁਪਰਖਿਆ।
(ਆਪਣੀ) ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਥੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਗੰਧਿਤ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਐਉਂ) ਸੰਚ ਪਰਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The truth about the sandal comes to the forefront when it perfumes everyone with its fragrance.
ਸਭੇਵਰਨਗਵਾਇਭਖਿਅਭਖਿਆ।
ਸਾਰੇ ਵਰਣ (ਭੱਖ ਅਭੱਖ ਕਹੀਏ) ਭਲੇ ਬੁਰੇ (ਢੱਕ, ਪਲਾਹ, ਕਿੱਕਰ, ਨਿੰਮ ਆਦਿ ਰੂਪ) ਗਵਾ ਕੇ (ਚੰਦਨ ਹੀ ਕਰ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਥਵਾ ਭੱਖ ਅਭੱਖ ਖਾਣ ਯਾ ਨਾ ਖਾਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਫਲਾਂ ਅਫਲਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ ਸਾਰੇ ਤਦ ਰੂਪ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The gurmukh goes beyond all the caste and the distinctions of eating taboos.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਭੈਭਾਇਅਪਿਉਪੀਚਖਿਆ।
ਸਾਧ ਸਗੰਤ ਵਿਖੇ (ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ; ਓਹਨਾਂ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਪੀਕੇ ਸਵਾਦ ਲੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
He drinks the nectar of fear and love of the Lord in the holy congregation.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਹਜਿਸੁਭਾਇਪ੍ਰੇਮਪ੍ਰਤਖਿਆ।੧੬।
(ਓਹਨਾਂ) ਗੁਰਮਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਜ ਸੁਭਾ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Gurmukh comes face to face with his own intrinsic nature (sahaj subhai).

ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾਂਗੁਰਸਿਖਸੇਵਕਮਾਵਣੀ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Within the teaching of the Guru, the Sikhs of the Guru serve (others).
ਚਾਰਿਪਦਾਰਥਿਭਿਖਫਕੀਰਾਂਪਾਵਣੀ।
ਚਾਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ (ਧਰਮ, ਅਰਥ, ਕਾਮ, ਮੋਖ) ਦੀ ਭਿੱਖਯਾ 'ਫਕੀਰ' (ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਯਾਰਿਆਂ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਗ੍ਯਾਸੂਆਂ) ਨੂੰ ਪਾਉਣੀ ਹੈ।
They give in charity the four riches (char padarathi) to the beggars.
ਲੇਖਅਲੇਖਅਲਖਿਬਾਣੀਗਾਵਣੀ।
ਲੇਖੇ ਥੋਂ ਅਲੇਖ ਜੋ ਅਲੱਖ (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾਂ) ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਉਚਾਰ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਆਪ) ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
They sing paeans of the invisible Lord who is beyond all accounts.
ਭਾਇਭਗਤਿਰਸਇਖਅਮਿਉਚੁਆਵਣੀ।
ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਗੰਨੇ ਦੇ ਰਸ ਵਾਂਙੂੰ ਮਿੱਠੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ (ਰੂਪੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਜਗਿਆਸੂਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਚ 'ਚੁਆਉਣੀ' ਕਹੀਏ) ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਆਪ ਜਪਦੇ ਤੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
They drink the juice of the sugarcane of loving devotion, and make others also enjoy the same.
ਤੁਲਿਨਭੂਤਭਵਿਖਨਕੀਮਤਿਪਾਵਣੀ।
(ਉਸ ਫਲ ਦੇ) ਸਮਾਨ ਤਿੰਨਾਂ ਕਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੁਲ ਸਕਦੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ (ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਕੋਈ ਕੀਮਤ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।
Nothing in the past as well as the future can be equal to their love.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮਾਰਗਵਿਖਲਵੈਨਲਾਵਣੀ।੧੭।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਰਗ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਉਲਾਂਘ ਭਰਣੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਲਵੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦੀ (ਉਸਦੀ ਬ੍ਰੋਬਰੀ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਬੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ)।
None can vie with even the one step of the way of gurmukhs.

ਇੰਦ੍ਰਪੁਰੀਲਖਰਾਜਨੀਰਭਰਾਵਣੀ।
(ਜੋ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾਕੇ) ਪਾਣੀ ਭਰਣ ਦੀ (ਟਹਿਲ) ਹੈ ਉਹ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਪੁਰੀ ਦੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰਾਜਾਂ (ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ) ਹੈ।
Fetching water for the holy congregation is equal to the kingdom of lacs of Indrapuris.
ਲਖਸੁਰਗਸਿਰਤਾਜਗਲਾਪੀਹਾਵਣੀ।
ਕਣਕ ਪੀਹਣ ਦੀ (ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਜੋ ਸੇਵਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ) ਲੱਖਾਂ ਸੁਰਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਰਤਾਜ ਹੈ।
Grinding of corn (for the holy congregation) is more than the pleasure of myriads of heavens.
ਰਿਧਿਸਿਧਿਨਿਧਿਲਖਸਾਜਚੁਲਿਝੁਕਾਵਣੀ।
(ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੇ ਛਕਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ) ਚੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਝੋਕਣੀ ਹੈ ਰਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਸਿੱਧੀਆਂ ਨਿਧੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਸਾਜਾਂ (ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ)।
Arranging for and putting in woods into the hearth of langar (free kitchen) for the congregation is equal to the rddhis, siddhis and the nine treasures.
ਸਾਧਗਰੀਬਨਿਵਾਜਗਰੀਬੀਆਵਣੀ।
ਸਾਧੂ (ਅਭ੍ਯਾਗਤ ਤੇ) ਗਰੀਬ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਦੇਣੀ ਹੈ (ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਯਾ ਇਹੋ ਮਨ ਵਿਖੇ) ਗਰੀਬੀ ਆਉਣੀ ਹੈ, (ਕੋਈ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਗਰੀਬ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਹਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਬੀ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਹੀ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ)।
The holy persons are the caretakers of the poor and in their company the humility resides in the heart (of people).
ਅਨਹਦਿਸਬਦਿਅਗਾਜਬਾਣੀਗਾਵਣੀ।੧੮।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਰੇ ਜਾਕੇ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਬਾਣੀ ਗਾਉਣੀ ਹੈ, ਇਹੋ ਅਨਾਹਦ ਸਬਦ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੈ।
Singing of hymns of the Guru is the personification of the unstruck melody.

ਹੋਮਜਗਲਖਭੋਗਚਣੇਚਬਾਵਣੀ।
(ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ) ਛੋਲੇ ਚਬਾਉਣ (ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ) ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੋਮ ਤੇ ਜੱਗ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਜੋ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਭੋਗ ਹਨ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ)।
To feed a Sikh with parched gram is superior to hundreds of thousands of burnt offerings and feasts.
ਤੀਰਥਪੁਰਬਸੰਜੋਗੁਪੈਰਧੁਵਾਵਣੀ।
(ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ) ਚਰਣ ਧੋਣ ਧੁਵਾਵਣ (ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ) ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੁਰਬੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਜੋਗਾਂ ਦੇ (ਮੰਨੇ ਹੋਏ ਫਲਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਫਲਦਾਇਕ ਹੈ)।
To cause his to be washed is superior to visits to assemblages at the places of pilgrimages.
ਗਿਆਨਧਿਆਨਲਖਜੋਗਸਬਦੁਸੁਣਾਵਣੀ।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਵਣ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਗਿਆਨ, ਧਿਆਨ ਦੇ ਜੋਗ (ਦੇ ਫਲ ਨਾਲ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ)।
To repeat to a Sikh of the Gurus hymns is equal to a hundred thousands of other religious exercises.
ਰਹੈਨਸਹਸਾਸੋਗਝਾਤੀਪਾਵਣੀ।
(ਸਤਿਸੰਗ ਵਿਖੇ) ਪਲ ਦੀ ਪਲ ਝਾਤੀ ਮਾਰਨੀ ਬੀ ਸੰਸੇ ਸੋਗ ਸਾਰੇ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Even the glimpse of the Guru dispels all doubts and regrets.
ਭਉਜਲਵਿਚਿਅਰੋਗਨਲਹਰਿਡਰਾਵਣੀ।
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਅਰੋਗ ਰਖਦੀ ਹੈ ਤੇ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਦੀ) ਲਹਿਰ (ਚਿੰਤਾ) ਡਰਾਉਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ (ਭਾਸਦੀ)।
Such a man remains unscathed in the terrible world ocean and does not fear its waves.
ਲੰਘਿਸੰਜੋਗਵਿਜੋਗਗੁਰਮਤਿਆਵਣੀ।੧੯।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਉਣਾ (ਇਹ ਹੈ) ਕਿ ਸੰਜੋਗ ਵਿਜੋਗ ਨੂੰ ਲੰਘੇ (ਸਹਜ ਪਦ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਹੇ)। (ਅਥਵਾ) ਸੰਜੋਗ ਵਿਜੋਗ ਦੇ (ਹਰਖ ਸ਼ੋਕ ਤੋਂ) ਲੰਘ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਮਤ ਦੀ ('ਆਵਣੀ') ਪਾ੍ਰਪਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। (ਅਥਵਾ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੱਤ ਦੀ ('ਆਵਣੀ') ਪਾ੍ਰਪਤੀ ਨਾਲ (ਭਾਵ, ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸਿਖ੍ਯਾ ਲੀਤਿਆਂ) ਸੰਜੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਜੋਗਾਂ (ਦੇ ਫਲ ਹਰਖ ਤੇ ਸ਼
He whom embraces the Gurus religion (Gurmati) has past beyond the bounds of joy or grief for gain or loss.
ਪਉੜੀ੨੦
ਧਰਤੀਬੀਉਬੀਜਾਇਸਹਸਫਲਾਇਆ।
ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੀਉ ਪਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਹੋਕੇ ਫਲੀਭੂਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
As the seed puts in the earth gives fruit thousand times more.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਮੁਖਿਪਵਾਇਨਲੇਖਲਿਖਾਇਆ।
(ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਦੇ ਮੁਖ ਵਿਖੇ (ਭੋਜਨ ਆਦਿਕ) ਪਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ (ਕਿੰਨ ਫਲ ਹੈ) ਕੁਝ ਲੇਖਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ।
The food put in the mouth of a gurmukh multiplies infinitely and its count becomes impossible.
ਧਰਤੀਦੇਇਫਲਾਇਜੋਈਫਲੁਪਾਇਆ।
ਧਰਤੀ ਉਹੋ ਫਲ ਦੇਵੇਗੀ ਜੋ ਫਲ ਬੀਜਿਆ ਜਾਊ।
The earth gives the fruit of the seed sowed in it;
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਮੁਖਿਸਮਾਇਸਭਫਲਲਾਇਆ।
(ਪਰ) ਗੁਰ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਵਿਖੇ ਪਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਹਰੇਕ ਫਲ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
But the seed it offered to Guru oriented ones gives all sorts of fruits.
ਬੀਜੇਬਾਝੁਨਖਾਇਨਧਰਤਿਜਮਾਇਆ।
ਬੀਜੇ ਬਾਝ (ਕੋਈ) ਫਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦਾ, ਨਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਹੀ (ਅਣਬੀਜਿਆ) ਉਗਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
Without sowing, neither anyone could eat anything nor the earth can produce anything;
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਚਿਤਿਵਸਾਇਇਛਿਪੁਜਾਇਆ।੨੦।੧੪।ਚਉਦਾਂ।
(ਪਰ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ (ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ) ਨੂੰ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਚ ਵਸਾ ਲਵੇ, (ਭਾਵ-ਸੇਵਾ ਦੇ ਚਾਉ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਕ ਨਾਲ ਜੀ ਭਰਿਆ ਰਹੇ, ਭਾਵੇਂ ਅਵੱਸ਼੍ਯਕ ਕਾਰਣਾਂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੋ ਨਾ ਸਕੇ ਤਾਂ ਵੀ) ਇੱਛਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Having the desire of serve the Gurmukh, fulfils all desires.
