ਪਉੜੀ੧
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸਚਾਪਾਤਿਸਾਹੁਕੂੜੇਬਾਦਿਸਾਹਦੁਨੀਆਵੇ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੱਚੇ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਹਨ ਹੋਰ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਝੂਠੇ ਹਨ।
The true Guru (God) is the true emperor; all other worldly kinds are fake ones.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਨਾਥਾਨਾਥੁਹੈਹੋਇਨਉਂਨਾਥਅਨਾਥਨਿਥਾਵੇ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਥ ਹਨ (ਹੋਰ ਜਿਹੜੇ) ਨਉਂ ਨਾਥ (ਕਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ) ਓਹ ਅਨਾਥ (ਗਰੀਬ) ਨਿਥਾਵੇ (ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ)। (ਭਾਵ-ਘਰ ਘਰ ਖੱਪਰ ਹਥ ਵਿਚ ਲਈ ਪਿੰਨਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The true Guru is the Lord of lords; the nine naths (members and heads of ascetic yogi orders) are refugeless and without any master.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸਚੁਦਾਤਾਰੁਹੈਹੋਰੁਦਾਤੇਫਿਰਦੇਪਾਛਾਵੇ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਸੱਚਾ ਦਾਤਾ ਹੈ ਹੋਰ ਦਾਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਪਿਛੇ ਲੱਗੀ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਅਥਵਾ ਬ੍ਰਿਛ ਦੇ ਪਰਛਾਵੇ ਵਾਙੂੰ ਇਕ ਥਾਉਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ)।
The true Guru is the true bestower; other donors just move after Him.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਕਰਤਾਪੁਰਖੁਹੈਕਰਿਕਰਤੂਤਿਨਿਨਾਵਨਿਨਾਵੇ।
ਸਤੁਗਰੂ ਹੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖ (ਰਚਨ ਹਾਰ) ਹਨ, (ਅਰਥਾਤ) ਕਰਮ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਨਿਨਾਵਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮ ਵਾਲਾ (ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ) ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ, ਅਜਿਹਾ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਚਾਰੇ ਕੁੰਟੀ ਉਜਾਗਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜਿਹਾ ਕੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ-'ਜਿਸੁ ਨੀਚ ਕਉ ਕੋਈ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ॥ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਉਹੁ ਚਹੁਕੁੰਟ ਮਾਨੈ')।
The true Guru is the creator and makes the unknown famous by giving them the name (naam).
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸਚਾਸਾਹੁਹੈਹੋਰੁਸਾਹਅਵੇਸਾਹਉਚਾਵੇ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੱਚਾ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਹੈ ਹੋਰ ਸ਼ਾਹ 'ਵੇਸਾਹ' (ਮੁਰਦੇ, ਸ੍ਵਾਸ ਤੋਂ ਹੀਨ) ਹਨ ਅਰ ('ਉਚਾਵੇ') ਚਲਾਊ (=ਨਾਸ਼ੀ) ਹਨ, (ਅਥਵਾ ਛੱਪਰੀ ਵਾਸਾਂ ਵਾਙੂੰ ਹਨ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਮੋਢੇ ਪੁਰ ਘਰ ਚੁੱਕੀ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਥਵਾ 'ਵਿਸਾਹ ਉਚਾਵੇ' ਬੇਇਤਬਾਰੇ ਹਨ)।
True Guru is the real banker; other rich person’s cannot be believed.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸਚਾਵੈਦੁਹੈਹੋਰੁਵੈਦੁਸਭਕੈਦਕੂੜਾਵੇ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੱਚੇ ਵੈਦ ਹਨ ਹੋਰ ਵੈਦ ਸਭ ਝੂਠ ਹਨ (ਤੇ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੀ) ਕੈਦ ਵਿਚ ਹਨ।
The true Guru is the true physician; others themselves are imprisoned in the false bondage of transmigration.
ਵਿਣੁਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸਭਿਨਿਗੋਸਾਵੈ।੧।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੇ ਬਾਝ ਸਾਰੇ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਹੀ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Without the true Guru they all are without the guiding force.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਤੀਰਥੁਜਾਣੀਐਅਠਸਠਿਤੀਰਥਸਰਣੀਆਏ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾਣੀਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਿ ਠੀਕ ਹਨ, ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The true Guru is that pilgrimages centre in whose shelter are the sixty-eight pilgrimage centres of the Hindus.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਦੇਉਅਭੇਉਹੈਹੋਰੁਦੇਵਗੁਰੁਸੇਵਤਰਾਏ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ('ਦੇਵ') ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਸਰੂਪ ('ਅਭੇਉ') ਭੇਦ ਰਹਿਤ ਹਨ, ਹੋਰ ਦੇਵਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੀ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Being beyond dualities, the true a Guru is the supreme God and other gods get across the world ocean only by serving Him.

The true Guru is that philosopher's stone the dust of whose feet adorns millions of philosopher's stones.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਪੂਰਾਪਾਰਿਜਾਤੁਪਾਰਜਾਤਲਖਸਫਲਧਿਆਏ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪੂਰਣ ਕਲਪ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਕਲਪ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ ਫਲਾਂ ਵਾਲੇ ਧਿਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The true Guru is that perfect wish-fulfilling tree who is meditated upon by the millions of wish-fulfilling trees.
ਸੁਖਸਾਗਰਸਤਿਗੁਰਪੁਰਖੁਰਤਨਪਦਾਰਥਸਿਖਸੁਣਾਏ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਪੁਰਖ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਹਨ, ਸਿੱਖ੍ਯਾ ਰੂਪੀ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਸੁਣਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The true Guru being ocean of delights distributes pearls in the form of different sermons.
ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣਿਸਤਿਗੁਰਚਰਣਚਿੰਤਾਮਣੀਅਚਿੰਤਕਰਾਏ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨ ਹੀ ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣੀ ਹਨ (ਮਨ ਇੱਛਤ ਫਲ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ; 'ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਣੀ ਅਚਿੰਤ ਕਰਾਏ'=) ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਬੀ ਅਚਿੰਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The feet of the true Guru are that desire fulfilling fabulous gem (chintamani) which makes myriads of gems free of anxieties.
ਵਿਣੁਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਭਿਦੂਜੈਭਾਏ।੨।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝ (ਜੋ ਹੋਰ ਪਾਸੇ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਹਨ) ਸਭ (ਦੂਜੇ ਭਾ=) ਅਗ੍ਯਾਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਭੁੱਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
Except the true Guru (God) all other is duality (which makes one go the cycle of transmigration).

ਲਖਚਉਰਾਸੀਹਜੂਨਿਵਿਚਿਉਤਮੁਜੂਨਿਸੁਮਾਣਸਦੇਹੀ।
ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਲਖ ਜੂਨੀਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਮਾਣਸ ਦੇਹੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਜੋਨੀ ਹੈ।
Out of the eighty-four lakh species, the human life is the best one.
ਅਖੀਦੇਖੈਨਦਰਿਕਰਿਜਿਹਬਾਬੋਲੇਬਚਨਬਿਦੇਹੀ।
ਇਸ ਵਿਖੇ (ਬਿਦੇਹੀ=) ਲਿੰਗ ਸਰੀਰ ਹੈ (੧੭ ਤੱਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਬੁੱਧ ਦੀ ਬਨਾਵਟ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜੀਵ) ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੀਭ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਬਚਨ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
By his eyes man beholds and with his tongue he eulogises God.
ਕੰਨੀਸੁਣਦਾਸੁਰਤਿਕਰਿਵਾਸਲਏਨਕਿਸਾਸਸਨੇਹੀ।
ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਗਿਆਤ ਨਾਲ ਅਰ ਨੱਕ ਨਾਲ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਰ (ਸਨੇਹੀ=) ਪ੍ਯਾਰੇ ਸ੍ਵਾਸ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਅਗੇ ਕਰਮ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ)।
By ears he listens carefully and smells lovingly by his nose.
ਹਥੀਕਿਰਤਿਕਮਾਵਣੀਪੈਰੀਚਲਣੁਜੋਤਿਇਵੇਹੀ।
ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪੈਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਚਲਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ (ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਨੇ ਪਾਈ) ਹੈ।
By hands he earns livelihood and moves by the power of feet.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਜਨਮੁਸਕਾਰਥਾਮਨਮੁਖਮੂਰਤਿਮਤਿਕਿਨੇਹੀ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਸਫਲ ਹੈ, ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂਰਖ ਦੀ ਮਤ ਕੇਹੀ ਹੈ? (ਭਾਵ, ਭੈੜੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ)
In this species, the life of a gurmukh is successful but how is the thinking of manmukh, the mind-orientated one ? The thinking of the manmukh is evil.
ਕਰਤਾਪੁਰਖੁਵਿਸਾਰਿਕੈਮਾਣਸਦੀਮਨਿਆਸਧਰੇਹੀ।
ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਭਰੋਸਾ) ਛੱਡਕੇ ਮਨੁਖ ਦੀ ਮਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਆਸ਼ਾ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ।
Manmukh, forgetting the Lord goes on pinning his hopes upon men.
ਪਸੂਪਰੇਤਹੁਬੁਰੀਬੁਰੇਹੀ।੩।
ਪਸ਼ੂਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਤਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਭੀ (ਉਸ ਦੀ ਦੇਹ) ਬੁਰੀ ਥੋਂ ਬੁਰੀ ਹੈ।
His body is worse than then animals’ and the ghosts’.
ਪਉੜੀ੪
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਾਹਿਬੁਛਡਿਕੈਮਨਮੁਖੁਹੋਇਬੰਦੇਦਾਬੰਦਾ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸ੍ਵਾਮੀ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗਕੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਾਸ ਦਾ ਦਾਸ ਜਾ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ।
Manmukh, the mind-orientated, leaving away the true Guru Lord becomes slave of man.
ਹੁਕਮੀਬੰਦਾਹੋਇਕੈਨਿਤਉਠਿਜਾਇਸਲਾਮਕਰੰਦਾ।
ਹੁਕਮ ਦਾ ਤਾਬੇਦਾਰ ਹੋਕੇ ਰੋਜ਼ (ਤੜਕੇ) ਉੱਠਕੇ ਸਲਾਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Becoming errand boy of man he goes daily to salute him.
ਆਠਪਹਰਹਥਜੋੜਿਕੈਹੋਇਹਜੂਰੀਖੜਾਰਹੰਦਾ।
ਅੱਠੇ ਪਹਿਰ ਹੱਥ ਜੋੜਕੇ ਹਾਜ਼ਰ ਬਾਸ਼ੀ ਹੋਕੇ ਖਲੋਤਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
All the twenty four hours (eight pahars) with folded hands he stands before his master.
ਨੀਦਨਭੁਖਨਸੁਖਤਿਸੁਸੂਲੀਚੜ੍ਹਿਆਰਹੈਡਰੰਦਾ।
ਨਾ ਹੀ ਨੀਂਦ ਦਾ ਸੁੱਖ, ਨਾ ਹੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਲਗਦੀ ਮਾਨੋਂ (ਸੇਵਾ ਦੀ) ਸੂਲੀ ਪੁਰ ਚੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਡਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Sleep, hunger and pleasure he does not have and remains so scared as if he has been sacrificed.
ਪਾਣੀਪਾਲਾਧੁਪਛਾਉਸਿਰਉਤੈਝਲਿਦੁਖਸਹੰਦਾ।
(ਬਰਸਾਤ ਦੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਦਾ) ਪਾਣੀ (ਸਰਦੀ ਦਾ) ਪਾਲਾ (ਗਰਮੀ ਦੀਆਂ) ਧੁੱਪਾਂ (ਸਿਆਲੇ ਦੀਆਂ) ਛਾਵਾਂ ਸਿਰ ਪਰ ਝੱਲਕੇ ਦੁਖ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਹੈ।
Throughout rains, cold, sunlight, shade, he undergoes myriad sufferings.
ਆਤਸਬਾਜੀਸਾਰੁਵੇਖਿਰਣਵਿਚਿਘਾਇਲੁਹੋਇਮਰੰਦਾ।
ਰਣ ਵਿਖੇ ਤੋਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਛਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਨੋਂ ਆਤਸ਼ਬਾਜੀ ਤੁੱਲ ਅਰ) ਤਲਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਝਲਕ ਦੇਖਦਾ (ਤੇ ਸੱਟ ਖਾ ਕੇ) ਜ਼ਖਮੀ ਹੋਕੇ ਮਰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
In the battlefield (of life) this same person, considering sparks of iron as fireworks gets mortally wounded.
ਗੁਰਪੂਰੇਵਿਣੁਜੂਨਿਭਵੰਦਾ।੪।
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝ ਜੋਨੀਆਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਭਟਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
Without the (shelter of) perfect Guru, he wanders through the species.
ਪਉੜੀ੫
ਨਾਥਾਂਨਾਥੁਨਸੇਵਨੀਹੋਇਅਨਾਥੁਗੁਰੂਬਹੁਚੇਲੇ।
ਨਾਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਥ (ਮਾਲਕ) ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਸੇਂਵਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ, (ਉਂ) ਬਥੇਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਥ ਹੋਕੇ (ਸਦਾਕੇ) ਚੇਲੇ। (ਫਸਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Not serving the Lord (God) of Lords, many lords (naths) becoming gurus initiate people as their disciples.
ਕੰਨਪੜਾਇਬਿਭੂਤਿਲਾਇਖਿੰਥਾਖਪਰੁਡੰਡਾਹੇਲੇ।
ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਾੜ, ਸਵਾਹ ਲਾ, ਖਫਣੀਆਂ (ਗਲ ਪਾ), ਖੱਪਰ ਤੇ ਡੰਡਾ (ਹੱਥਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ) ਹਲਾਈ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
They getting the ears split and applying ashes on their bodies carry begging bowls and staff.
ਘਰਿਘਰਿਟੁਕਰਮੰਗਦੇਸਿੰਙੀਨਾਦੁਵਾਜਾਇਨਿਭੇਲੇ।
ਘਰੀਂ ਰੋਟੀਆਂ ਮੰਗਣ ਲਈ ਸਿੰਙੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਦ ਮਿਲਕੇ ਪੂਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Going from door to door, they beg food and blow their singi, a special instrument made of horn.
ਭੁਗਤਿਪਿਆਲਾਵੰਡੀਐਸਿਧਿਸਾਧਿਕਸਿਵਰਾਤੀਮੇਲੇ।
ਭੋਜਨਾਂ ਦੇ (ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਦੇ) ਪਿਆਲੇ ਵੰਡਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਿੱਧ ਅਤੇ ਚੇਲੇ ਸ਼ਿਵਰਾਤਰੀ ਦੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਵਿਖੇ (ਕੱਠੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ) ਹਨ।
Getting together on the Sivaratri fair they share with one another the food and the cup of drinks.
ਬਾਰਹਪੰਥਚਲਾਇਦੇਬਾਰਹਵਾਟੀਖਰੇਦੁਹੇਲੇ।
ਬਾਰਾਂ ਮਾਰਗਾਂ (ਵਿਖੇ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਲਪੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਤ) ਚਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਬਾਰਾਂ ਰਸਤਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਆਪ ਦੁਖੀ (ਅਰ ਚੇਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਖੀ) ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
They follow one of the twelve sects (of yogis) and go on moving on these twelve ways i.e. they go on transmigrating.
ਵਿਣੁਗੁਰਸਬਦਨਸਿਝਨੀਬਾਜੀਗਰਕਰਿਬਾਜੀਖੇਲੇ।
ਗੁਰੂ (ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ) ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦੋਂ ਬਾਝ ਕਲ੍ਯਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ, ਬਾਜ਼ੀਗਰਾਂ (ਵਾਂਙੂੰ) ਬਾਜ਼ੀਆਂ (ਪਾਕੇ ਮਾਨੋਂ) ਖੇਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਭਾਵ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਝਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Without the word of the Guru, none gets liberated and all of them run here and there like acrobats.
ਅੰਨ੍ਹੈਅੰਨ੍ਹਾਖੂਹੀਠੇਲੇ।੫।
(ਜਿਕੁਰ) ਅੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਸੂਰਦਾਸ (ਆਗੂ) ਖੂਹ ਵਿਚ ਠੇਲ੍ਹ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
This way the blind one goes on pushing the blind into the well.
ਪਉੜੀ੬
ਸਚੁਦਾਤਾਰੁਵਿਸਾਰਕੈਮੰਗਤਿਆਂਨੋਮੰਗਣਜਾਹੀ।
ਸਚੇ (ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ) ਦਾਤਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾਕੇ (ਜੇਹੜੇ ਉਹਦੇ) ਮੰਗਤੇ ਹਨ, ਓਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਹੱਥ ਟੱਡਦੇ ਹਨ।
Forgetting the true bestower, people spread their hands before the beggars.
ਢਾਢੀਵਾਰਾਂਗਾਂਵਦੇਵੈਰਵਿਰੋਧਜੋਧਸਾਲਾਹੀ।

The bards sing of the brave works pertaining to the brave and eulogise the duels and enmities of the warriors.
ਨਾਈਗਾਵਨਿਸੱਦੜੇਕਰਿਕਰਤੂਤਿਮੁਏਬਦਰਾਹੀ।
ਨਾਈ ਲੋਕ (ਓਹਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਉਸਤੁਤਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਜੇਹੜੇ) ਕਰਤੂਤਾਂ ਕਰ ਭੈੜਿਆਂ ਰਾਹਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਮਰ ਗਏ ਹਨ।
The barbers also sing the praises of those who have died treading evil path and committing evil deeds.
ਪੜਦੇਭਟਕਵਿਤਕਰਿਕੂੜਕੁਸਤੁਮੁਖਹੁਆਲਾਹੀ।
ਭੱਟ ਲੋਕ (ਕੁੜੇ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹਾਂ ਦੇ) ਕਬਿੱਤ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਨਿਰਾ) ਕੂੜ ਤੇ ਕੁਸੱਤ ਮੂੰਹੋਂ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਹਨ।
The eulogisers recite poetry for false kings and go on telling lies.
ਹੋਇਅਸਿਰਿਤਪੁਰੋਹਿਤਾਪ੍ਰੀਤਿਪਰੀਤੈਵਿਰਤਿਮੰਗਾਹੀ।
ਪਰੋਹਤ ਦੀ ਐਸੀ ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਯਾਰ ਹੋਕੇ) ਪਰਸਪਰ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪਿਛੋਂ) ਵਿਰਤ ਮੰਗਣ ਲਗ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The priests first seek shelter but afterwards lay their claim of bread and butter i.e. they entangle people in the fear of the net of ritualism.
ਛੁਰੀਆਮਾਰਨਿਪੰਖੀਏਹਟਿਹਟਿਮੰਗਦੇਭਿਖਭਵਾਹੀ।
ਕਈ ਛੁਰੀਆਂ ਮਾਰਕੇ (ਪੈਸੇ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ) (ਕਈ) ਪੰਖੀਆਂ ਵਾਗੂੰ ਹੱਟ ਹੱਟ ਫਿਰਕੇ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The people belonging to the sects of persons wearing feathers on their heads punch their bodies with knives and go on begging from shop to shop.
ਗੁਰਪੂਰੇਵਿਣੁਰੋਵਨਿਧਾਹੀ।੬।
ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਾਝ (ਮਾਨੋਂ) ਢਾਹਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਮਾਰ ਕੇ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਫਿਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
But without the perfect Guru, they all wail and weep bitterly.

ਕਰਤਾਪੁਰਖੁਨਚੇਤਿਓਕੀਤੇਨੋਕਰਤਾਕਰਿਜਾਣੈ।
(ਜਗਤ ਦੇ) ਕਰਤਾ (ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ) ਦੀ ਅਰਾਧਨਾ ਛੱਡਕੇ ਲੋਕ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ (ਜੀਵ) ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
O man, you have not remembered the creator and have accepted the created as your creator.
ਨਾਰਿਭਤਾਰਿਪਿਆਰੁਕਰਿਪੁਤੁਪੋਤਾਪਿਉਦਾਦੁਵਖਾਣੈ।
ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਭਰਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਮੋਹ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਪੁਤਰ ਪਿਉ ਨੂੰ ਤੇ ਦਾਦੇ ਪੋਤਰੇ ਨੂੰ।
Getting engrossed in wife or husband you have further created relationships of son, grandson, father and grandfather.
ਧੀਆਭੈਣਾਮਾਣੁਕਰਿਤੁਸਨਿਰੁਸਨਿਸਾਕਬਬਾਣੈ।
ਧੀਆਂ (ਪਿਉ ਤੇ ਮਾਣ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ) ਭੈਣਾਂ (ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਪੁਰ) ਮਾਣ ਰਖਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, (ਕਦੀ) ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ, (ਕਦੀ) ਗੁੱਸੇ (ਭਾਵ ਕੁਝ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਰਾਜੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਭੰਨਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ) ਅਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਬਬਾਣੇ (ਸਾਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਹਾਲ ਹੈ ਭਾਵ-ਬਾਬੇ ਦੇ ਪੋਤੇ ਆਪੋ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਇਦਾਦਾਂ ਵੰਡਣ ਲਈ ਰੁਸਕੇ ਅਰਜ਼ੀਆਂ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਥਵਾ ਸਾਕ ਬਬਾਣੇ
Daughters and sisters proudly become happy or annoyed and such is the case of all relatives.
ਸਾਹੁਰਪੀਹਰੁਨਾਨਕੇਪਰਵਾਰੈਸਾਧਾਰੁਧਿਙਾਣੈ।
ਸਾਹੁਰੇ, ਪੇਕੇ, ਨਾਨਕੇ, (ਘਰ ਦੇ) ਪਰਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਸਾਕ ਧਿਙਾਣੇ ਦੇ ਹੀ (ਮੰਨੇ ਹੋਏ) ਹਨ, (ਅੰਤ ਦਾ ਸਾਥੀ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ)।
All other relation's such as the house of father-in-law, one's mother's house, the house of the maternal uncles and other relations of the family are disdainful.
ਚਜਅਚਾਰਵੀਚਾਰਵਿਚਿਪੰਚਾਅੰਦਰਿਪਤਿਪਰਵਾਣੈ।
ਪੂਜਾ, ਯੱਗ, ਸਰਾਧ, (ਪੰਚੇਤਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ) ਸਲਾਹਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਪੈਂਚਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਪਤ (ਪਰਤੀਤ ਵਾਲੇ) ਮੰਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਮੰਨੇ (ਬੈਠਣ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੌਕ ਵਿੱਚ ਫਸੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ)।
If conduct and thoughts are civilised, one gets honour before the high ups of the society.
ਅੰਤਕਾਲਜਮਜਾਲਵਿਚਿਸਾਥੀਕੋਇਨਹੋਇਸਿਞਾਣੈ।
(ਪਰ ਸ਼ੋਕ) ਅੰਤ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਜਮ ਦੇ ਜਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਸਾਥੀ ਹੋਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਆਣਦਾ।
However, at the end, when caught up in the web of death, no companion takes notice of the person.
ਗੁਰਪੂਰੇਵਿਣੁਜਾਇਜਮਾਣੈ।੭।
ਗੱਲ ਕੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ (ਮਿਲੇ) ਬਾਝ (ਸਾਰੇ) ਜਮ ਦੀ ਪੁਰੀ ਜਾਣਗੇ।
Bereft of the grace of the perfect Guru, all persons become scared of death.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸਾਹੁਅਥਾਹੁਛਡਿਕੂੜੇਸਾਹੁਕੂੜੇਵਣਜਾਰੇ।
(ਜੋ ਅਥਾਹ) ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਓਹ) ਸ਼ਾਹ ਤੇ ਵਣਜਾਰੇ (ਦੋਵੇਂ) ਝੂਠੇ ਹਨ।
Except the infinite true Guru all other bankers and traders are false.
ਸਉਦਾਗਰਸਉਦਾਗਰੀਘੋੜੇਵਣਜਕਰਨਿਅਤਿਭਾਰੇ।
ਸੌਦਾਗਰ ਲੋਕ (ਸਉਦਾਗਰੀ=) ਲੈਣ ਦੇਣ ਵਿਖੇ ਘੋੜਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਭਾਰੀ ਵਪਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The merchants trade heavily in horses.
ਰਤਨਾਪਰਖਜਵਾਹਰੀਹੀਰੇਮਾਣਕਵਣਜਪਸਾਰੇ।
ਜਵਾਹਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰੀ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਖਦੇ ਅਰ ਹੀਰਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਮਾਣਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਵਪਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਫੈਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The jewellers test the jewels and through diamonds and rubies spread their business.
ਹੋਇਸਰਾਫਬਜਾਜਬਹੁਸੁਇਨਾਰੁਪਾਕਪੜੁਭਾਰੇ।
ਸਰਾਫ ਲੋਕ ਸੋਨ ਰੁੱਪੇ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ; ਅਰ ਬਜਾਜ ਕਪੜੇ ਫੈਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਯਾ ਇਕ ਤਾਰੇ, ਯਾ ਤਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਙ ਅਨਗਿਣਤ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Gold merchants deal in gold and cash and drapers deal in clothes.
ਕਿਰਸਾਣੀਕਿਰਸਾਣਕਰਿਬੀਜਲੁਣਨਿਬੋਹਲਵਿਸਥਾਰੇ।
ਜ਼ਿਮੀਂਦਾਰ ਲੋਕ ਖੇਤੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਬੀਜਿਆ ਕੱਟਕੇ ਖਲਵਾਰੇ ਫੈਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Farmers undertake farming and sowing seed cut it afterwards and makes it big heaps.
ਲਾਹਾਤੋਟਾਵਰੁਸਰਾਪੁਕਰਿਸੰਜੋਗੁਵਿਜੋਗੁਵਿਚਾਰੇ।
(ਵਪਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੀ) ਲਾਹਾ ਕਦੀ ਟੋਟਾ (ਘਾਟਾ), (ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਕਿਧਰੇ ਵਰ ਕਿਧਰੇ ਸਰਾਪ, (ਅਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਸਨਬੰਧੀਆਂ ਦੇ) ਮੇਲੇ ਤੇ ਵਿਛੋੜੇ ਦਾ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
In all this business, profit, loss, boon, cure, meeting, separation goes hand in hand.
ਗੁਰਪੂਰੇਵਿਣੁਦੁਖੁਸੈਂਸਾਰੇ।੮।
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਹੀ ਹੈ।
Without the perfect Guru there is nothing in this world except suffering.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਵੈਦੁਨਸੇਵਿਓਰੋਗੀਵੈਦੁਨਰੋਗੁਮਿਟਾਵੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਸੱਚੇ) ਹਕੀਮ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ, ਰੋਗੀ ਹਕੀਮ ਰੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਟਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The true physician in the form of true Guru (God) has never been served; then how could a physician who himself is diseased remove the malady of others?
ਕਾਮਕ੍ਰੋਧੁਵਿਚਿਲੋਭੁਮੋਹੁਦੁਬਿਧਾਕਰਿਕਰਿਧ੍ਰੋਹੁਵਧਾਵੈ।
ਕਾਮ, ਕ੍ਰੋਧ, ਲੋਭ, ਮੋਹ ਆਦਿ ਰੋਗਾਂ ਵਿਚ (ਫਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਕੀਮ ਭਾਵ, ਝੂਠੇ ਗੁਰੂ) ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਛਲ ਤੇ ਦਗ਼ਾ ਹੀ ਵਧਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਇਸਦਾ=ਫਲ ਇਹ ਹੈ)।
These worldly physicians who themselves are engrossed in the lust, anger, greed, infatuation, deceive people and enhance their diseases.
ਆਧਿਬਿਆਧਿਉਪਾਧਿਵਿਚਿਮਰਿਮਰਿਜੰਮੈਦੁਖਿਵਿਹਾਵੈ।
(ਆਧਿ=) ਮਾਨਸੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ, (ਬਿਆਧਿ=) ਸਰੀਰਕ ਪੀੜਾ, (ਉਪਾਧਿ) ਅਧਿਵੈਦਕ ਕਸ਼ਟਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਮਰ ਮਰਕੇ ਗਮ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ (ਅਥਵਾ ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ) ਵਿਖੇ ਹੀ ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
This way man involved in these ailments goes on transmigrating and remains full of suffering.
ਆਵੈਜਾਇਭਵਾਈਐਭਵਜਲਅੰਦਰਿਪਾਰੁਨਪਾਵੈ।
ਆਉਣ ਜਾਣ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਭਟਕਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ।
He goes stray by coming and going and becomes unable to go across the world-ocean.
ਆਸਾਮਨਸਾਮੋਹਣੀਤਾਮਸੁਤਿਸਨਾਸਾਂਤਿਨਆਵੈ।
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਮੋਹਤ ਕਰ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਤਮੋਗੁਣੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਥੋਂ ਸ਼ਾਂਤਿ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ।
Hopes and desires always attract his mind and being guided by evil propensities he never attains peace.
ਬਲਦੀਅੰਦਰਿਤੇਲੁਪਾਇਕਿਉਮਨੁਮੂਰਖੁਅਗਿਬੁਝਾਵੈ।
ਬਲਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਲ ਪਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਕਿੱਕੁਰ ਮੂਰਖ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਅੱਗ ਬੁਝਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
How could a manmukh extinguish fire by putting oil on it?
ਗੁਰੁਪੂਰੇਵਿਣੁਕਉਣੁਛੁਡਾਵੈ।੯।
ਪੂਰਣ ਗੁਰੂ (ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਦੀ ਕਾਮੁਕ) ਬਾਝ ਕੌਣ (ਇਸ ਅੱਗ ਤੋਂ) ਛੁਡਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?
Who except the perfect Guru can liberate man from these bondage's?

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਤੀਰਥੁਛਡਿਕੈਅਠਿਸਠਿਤੀਰਥਨਾਵਣਜਾਹੀ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ (ਸਚੇ) ਤੀਰਥ ਨੂੰ ਛਡਕੇ ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਲਈ (ਲੋਕ) ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Leaving aside pilgrimage centre in the form of the true Guru (God) people go to take bath at the sixty-eight holy places.
ਬਗੁਲਸਮਾਧਿਲਗਾਇਕੈਜਿਉਜਲਜੰਤਾਂਘੁਟਿਘੁਟਿਖਾਹੀ।
(ਉਥੇ ਜਾਕੇ) ਬਗਲੇ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ (ਅੱਖਾਂ ਮੀਟਕੇ) ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾ ਮਾਨੋਂ ਜਲ ਜੰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਕੜ ਪਕੜ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਭਾਵ ਆਏ ਗਏ ਲੋਕ ਦੇਖਕੇ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Like crane, they keep their eyes closed in trance but they catch hold of small creatures, press them hard and eat them.
ਹਸਤੀਨੀਰਿਨਵਾਲੀਅਨਿਬਾਹਰਿਨਿਕਲਿਖੇਹਉਡਾਹੀ।
ਹਾਥੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਨ੍ਹਵਾਲੀਦੇ ਹਨ, ਓਹ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਕਲਕੇ (ਦੂਣੀ) ਖੇਹ ਉਡਾਕੇ (ਸਿਰ ਤੇ) ਪਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਏਹ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਪਰ ਦੂਣੀ ਮੈਲ ਸਹੇੜਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Elephant is given bath in water, but coming out of water it again spreads dust on its body.
ਨਦੀਨਡੁਬੈਤੂੰਬੜੀਤੀਰਥੁਵਿਸੁਨਿਵਾਰੈਨਾਹੀ।
ਨਦੀ ਵਿਚ ਤੂੰਬੀ ਡੁੱਬਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ (ਭਾਵ ਮਨ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ) ਤੀਰਥ ਉਸ ਦੀ (ਅੰਦਰਲੀ) ਵਿਹੁ (ਕੁੜੱਤਣ) ਹਟਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ। (ਯਥਾ-'ਲਉਕੀ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਈ॥ ਕਉਰਾਪਨੁ ਤਉ ਨ ਜਾਈ'॥ ਅਰਥਾਤ ਤੂੰਬੀ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਅਠਾਹਠ ਤੀਰਥ ਨ੍ਹਾਵੈ ਕਉੜੱਤਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ)।
Colocynth does not drown in water and even baths at many pilgrimage centres do not let its poison go.
ਪਥਰੁਨੀਰਪਖਾਲੀਐਚਿਤਿਕਠੋਰੁਨਭਿਜੈਗਾਹੀ।
ਪੱਥਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਨਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਖੀਏ ਪਰ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਕਠੋਰ ਚਿੱਤ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਭਿੱਜੇਗਾ। (ਅਗੇ ਛੇਕੜੀਆਂ ਦੋ ਤੁਕਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਦਾਰਸ਼ਟਾਂਤ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Stone put and washed in water remains hard as before and water does not get inside it.
ਮਨਮੁਖਭਰਮਨਉਤਰੈਭੰਭਲਭੂਸੇਖਾਇਭਵਾਹੀ।
ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਭਰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਤਰਦਾ, ਇਸੇ ਵਾਸਤੇ ('ਭੰਭਲ ਭੂਸੇ' ਖਾਂਦੇ) ਅਵਾਰਾ ਗਰਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਭੌਂਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The illusions and doubts of the mind orientated, manmukh, never come to an end and he always wanders in dubiety.
ਗੁਰੁਪੂਰੇਵਿਣੁਪਾਰਨਪਾਹੀ।੧੦।
ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰੂ (ਮਲਾਹ) ਬਾਝ ਪਾਰ (ਪਾਰਲਾ ਕਿਨਾਰਾ) ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦੇ।
Without the perfect Guru none can go across the world-ocean.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਪਾਰਸੁਪਰਹਰੈਪਥਰੁਪਾਰਸੁਢੂੰਢਣਜਾਏ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ) ਪਾਰਸ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡਕੇ (ਲੋਕ) ਪੱਥਰਾਂ (ਵਿਖੇ) ਪਾਰਸ ਲੱਭਣ ਲਈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Leaving aside the philosophers stone in the form of the true Guru, people go on searching the material philosopher's stone.
ਅਸਟਧਾਤੁਇਕਧਾਤੁਕਰਿਲੁਕਦਾਫਿਰੈਨਪ੍ਰਗਟੀਆਏ।
ਅੱਠਾਂ ਧਾਤਾਂ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਚਾਰ ਵਰਣ ਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਅਸ਼੍ਰਮਾਂ) ਨੂੰ ਇਕ (ਸੋਨਾ) ਧਾਂਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ (ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਬਨਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਾ) ਪਾਰਸ ਛਿਪਦਾ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ (ਹੋਕੇ) ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਚਰਦਾ।

Mammon-orientated person searches him in forests and gets disappointed in many illusions.

(ਮਾਇਆ ਨੂੰ) ਹੱਥ ਨਾਲ ਛੋਹਣ ਨਾਲ, ਹੱਥ ਕਾਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਲੋਭ ਲੁਭਾਇਆ ਅੰਤਹਕਰਣ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The touch of riches blackens one's outside and the mind is also smeared by it.
ਰਾਜਡੰਡੁਤਿਸੁਪਕੜਿਆਜਮਪੁਰਿਭੀਜਮਡੰਡੁਸਹਾਏ।
(ਜੇਕਰ) ਉਹ (ਲੋਭੀ ਚੋਰ) ਪਕੜਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ (ਤਦ ਇਕ ਤਾਂ) ਰਾਜਾ ਦਾ ਦੰਡ ਫੇਰ ਮਰਕੇ ਜਮਾਂ ਦਾ ਡੰਡ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Catching hold of wealth makes one liable to public punishment here and to punishment by the lord of death there in his abode.

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਾ ਜਨਮ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੇ ਭਾਇ ਦੇ ਖੋਟੇ ਦਾਉ ਵਿਖੇ (ਜਨਮ ਰਤਨ) ਹਾਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਗੁਰੂ (ਨਾਨਕ ਚੇਤਨ) ਕਲਪ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ (ਸੁਰਗੀ) ਕਲਪ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ (ਜੜ੍ਹ ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕੱਚੇ ਫਲ (ਨਾਮੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਜਾਚਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਅਥਵਾ 'ਕਚੇ' ਲੋਕ ਮੰਗਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Leaving the wish-fulfilling tree in the form of Guru, people desire to have the raw fruits of traditional wish-fulfilling tree (kalptaru/parijat).
ਪਾਰਜਾਤੁਲਖਸੁਰਗੁਸਣੁਆਵਾਗਵਣੁਭਵਣਵਿਚਿਪਚੇ।
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਕਲਪ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ, ਸੁਰਗ ਸਮੇਤ ਆਵਗੌਣ ਦੀ ਭਵਾਟੜੀ ਵਿਚ 'ਪਚਦੇ' ਦੁਖੀ ਹਨ, (ਭਾਵ ਸਭ ਨਾਸ਼ੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹਨ)।
Millions of parijat along with heavens are getting perished in the cycle of transmigration.
ਮਰਦੇਕਰਿਕਰਿਕਾਮਨਾਦਿਤਿਭੁਗਤਿਵਿਚਿਰਚਿਵਿਰਚੇ।
ਕਾਮਨਾ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਲੋਕ (ਰੱਬ ਦੇ) ਦਿਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਵਿਖੇ (ਆਪ) ਖਚਿਤ ਹਨ, (ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਫਸਾ ਕੇ ਇੱਛਾ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Controlled by desires people are perishing and are busy in enjoying whatever has been bestowed by the Lord.
ਤਾਰੇਹੋਇਅਗਾਸਚੜਿਓੜਕਿਤੁਟਿਤੁਟਿਥਾਨਹਲਚੇ।
(ਕਈ ਲੋਭੀ) ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਚੜ੍ਹਕੇ ਤਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਙ ਉਥੋਂ (ਪੁੰਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਭੋਗਕੇ) ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਟੁੱਟ ਟੁੱਟ ਕੇ ਥਾਉਂ ਤੋਂ ਡਿਗਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਭਾਵ ਮਨ ਕਲਪਤ ਯਾ ਸ਼ਾਸਤ੍ਰੋਕਤ, ਸ੍ਵਰਗ ਬੀ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਾ ਹੋਏ ਉਥੋਂ ਬੀ ਆਵਾਗਵਨ ਹੀ ਹੋਇਆ)।
Man of good actions establish in the sky in the form of stars and after exhausting the results of virtues again become falling stars.

(ਉਥੋਂ ਡਿਗਕੇ) ਕਈਆਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਿਉ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤੇ ਕਈਆਂ ਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਭਾਵ ਫੇਰ ਜੋਨੀ ਵਿਚ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Again through transmigration they become mothers and fathers and many beget children.
ਪਾਪਪੁੰਨੁਬੀਉਬੀਜਦੇਦੁਖਸੁਖਫਲਅੰਦਰਿਚਹਮਚੇ।
(ਜਿਹਾ) ਪਾਪ ਅਤੇ ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾ ਬੀਉ ਬੀਜਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਫਲ ਦੁਖ (ਵਿਚ ਦੁਖੀ) ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਵਿਚ ਅਨੰਦ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਭਾਵ ਪਿਛਲਾ ਜਨਮ ਫਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਲਈ ਕੁੱਤੇ ਬਿੱਲੇ ਜੋਨੀ ਆਦਿ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੇ ਕਰਮ ਫਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਚਹਿਲ ਪਹਿਲ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ)
Further sowing evils and virtues remain immersed in pleasures and sufferings.

ਪੂਰਣ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ) ਬਾਝ ਹਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ (ਭਾਵ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨਤਾ ਬਾਝ ਚੌਰਾਸੀ ਦੀ ਫਾਂਸੀ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹਾ 'ਉਦਮ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਗਾਵਹੀ॥ ਭਰਮਹਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਆਵਹੀ॥ ਪਸੂ ਪੰਖੀ ਸੈਲ ਤਰਵਰ ਗਣਤ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਆਵਏ॥ ਬੀਜੁ ਬੋਵਸਿ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗਹਿ ਕੀਆ ਅਪਣਾ ਪਾਵਏਂ॥'
Without the perfect Guru, God cannot be made happy.

ਸੁਖੁਸਾਗਰੁਗੁਰੁਛਡਿਕੈਭਵਜਲਅੰਦਰਿਭੰਭਲਭੂਸੇ।
ਸੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ (ਦੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ) ਵਿਖੇ ਲੋਕ ਡੱਕੋ ਡੋਲੇ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਵੱਲ ਭਟਕਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Leaving the Guru, the Pleasure Ocean, one tosses up and down in the world-ocean of delusions and deceptions.
ਲਹਰੀਨਾਲਿਪਛਾੜੀਅਨਿਹਉਮੈਅਗਨੀਅੰਦਰਿਲੂਸੇ।
(ਚਿੰਤਾ ਦੀਆਂ) ਲਹਿਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਰੀਦੇ ਹਨ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੂਪੀ ਬੜਗਾਵਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਸੜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
The stroke of the waves of the world-ocean tosses and the fire of ego continuously burns the inner self.
ਜਮਦਰਿਬਧੇਮਾਰੀਅਨਿਜਮਦੂਤਾਂਦੇਧਕੇਧੂਸੇ।
ਧਰਮਰਾਜ ਦੇ ਦਰਵਾਜ਼ੇ ਪੁਰ ਬੱਧੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਾਰੀਦੇ ਜਮਦੂਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਧੱਕਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਧੂਹੀਦੇ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਘਸੀਟੀਦੇ ਹਨ।)
Tied and beaten at the door of death, one receives the kicks of the messengers of death.
ਗੋਇਲਿਵਾਸਾਚਾਰਿਦਿਨਨਾਉਧਰਾਇਨਿਈਸੇਮੂਸੇ।
(ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤਾਂ) ਚਾਰ ਦਿਨ ਦਾ ('ਗੋਇਲ' ਕਹੀਏ) ਗੁਜਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਛੱਪਰੀਆਂ ਵਾਂਙੂੰ ਵਾਸਾ ਹੈ, (ਇੱਥੇ ਕੋਈ) ਈਸਾ ਮੂਸਾ ਨਾਮ ਧਰਾਕੇ (ਸਦਾ ਰਹਿਨ ਵਾਲੇ) ਕਹਾ ਗਏ।
May be some one has named himself after Christ or Moses, but in this world all are to stay for a few days.
ਘਟਿਨਕੋਇਅਖਾਇਦਾਆਪੋਧਾਪੀਹੈਰਤਹੂਸੇ।
(ਆਪ ਨੂੰ) ਘੱਟ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਖਾਉਂਦਾ (ਜਿਹਾ ਕਿ 'ਘਾਟਿ ਨ ਕਿਨਹੀ ਕਹਾਇਆ॥ ਸਭ ਕਹਿਤੇ ਹੈ ਪਾਇਆ'॥ ਅਰਥ=ਸਾਰੇ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਰੱਬ ਨੂੰ ਮੈਂ ਹੀ ਪਾ ਲੀਤਾ ਹੈ)। ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਹੈਰਤ ਨਾਲ ਹੱਟ ਗਏ।
Here none deems himself lesser one and all are engrossed in the rat race for selfish ends to find themselves shocked ultimately.
ਸਾਇਰਦੇਮਰਜੀਵੜੇਕਰਨਿਮਜੂਰੀਖੇਚਲਖੂਸੇ।
ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਦੇ ਮਰਜੀਵੜਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਙੂੰ ਮਜੂਰੀਆਂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਖੇਚਲ ਨਾਲ ਖੁੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਯਾ ਗੁਆਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Those who are divers of the pleasure-ocean existing in the form of Guru, only they remain happy in the labour (of spiritual discipline).
ਗੁਰੁਪੂਰੇਵਿਣੁਡਾਂਗਡੰਗੂਸੇ।੧੩।
ਪੂਰਣ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਬਾਝ ਡੱਕੋ ਡੋਲੇ ਹੀ ਹਨ, (ਜਾਂ) ਧਰਮਰਾਜ ਦਾ ਡੰਡਾ ਸੋਟਾ ਹੀ (ਬਾਕੀ ਹੈ, ਨਰਕ ਦੀ ਭੱਠੀ ਥੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ।)।
Without the true Guru, all are always at loggerheads.

ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣਿਗੁਰੁਛਡਿਕੈਚਿੰਤਾਮਣਿਚਿੰਤਾਨਗਵਾਏ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ, ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣੀ (ਚਿੰਤਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੰਨਿਆਂ ਹੋਇਆ ਪੱਥਰ) ਚਿਤ ਦੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਟਾਉਂਦੀ।
The traditional wish fulfilling fabulous gem (chintamani) cannot remove anxiety if one could not cultivate the Guru, chintamani.
ਚਿਤਵਣੀਆਲਖਰਾਤਿਦਿਹੁਤ੍ਰਾਸਨਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾਅਗਨਿਬੁਝਾਏ।
(ਸਗਮਾਂ) ਲੱਖਾਂ ਰਾਤ ਤੇ ਦਿਨ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਫ਼ੁਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ (ਚੋਰਾਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਭੈ ਉਠਦੇ ਹਨ) ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੱਗ ਡਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬੁਝਾਉਂਦੀ, (ਚਿੰਤਾਮਣੀ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਦੇਊ, ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਤੇ ਡਰ ਹੋਰ ਵਧੇਗਾ)।
Many hopes and disappointments scare man day in and day out and the fire of desires it never quenched.
ਸੁਇਨਾਰੁਪਾਅਗਲਾਮਾਣਕਮੋਤੀਅੰਗਿਹੰਢਾਏ।
ਸੋਨਾਂ, ਚਾਂਦੀ ਦੇ ਬਾਹਲੇ (ਭੂਖਣ) ਮਾਣਕ ਮੋਤੀ (ਦੇ ਜੜਾਊ) ਸਰੀਰ ਪੁਰ (ਪਹਿਨਕੇ) ਹੰਢਾਵੇ।
Plenty of gold, wealth, rubies and pearls are worn by man.
ਪਾਟਪਟੰਬਰਪੈਨ੍ਹਕੇਚੋਆਚੰਦਨਮਹਿਮਹਕਾਏ।
ਪੱਟ ਦੇ ਕੱਪੜੇ ਪਹਿਨਕੇ ਚੋਆ ਚਦਨ (ਆਦਿ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਨਾਲ) ਧਰਤੀ ਮਹਿਕਾ ਦੇਵੇ।
Wearing silken garment scatters around the fragrance of sandal etc.
ਹਾਥੀਘੋੜੇਪਾਖਰੇਮਹਲਬਗੀਚੇਸੁਫਲਫਲਾਏ।
ਹਾਥੀ ਘੋੜੇ ਕਾਠੀਆਂ ਵਾਲੇ, ਉਚੇ ਮੰਦਰ, ਬਗੀਚੇ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਸੁਹਣੇ ਫਲਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਫਲੀਭੂਤ ਹਨ (ਵਿਦਮਾਨ ਹੋਣ)।
Man keeps elephants, horses, palaces, and fruit laden gardens.
ਸੁੰਦਰਿਨਾਰੀਸੇਜਸੁਖੁਮਾਇਆਮੋਹਿਧੋਹਿਲਪਟਾਏ।
ਸੁਹਣੀਆਂ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸੇਜਾ ਦੇ ਸੁਖ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਣ, ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ (ਮੋਹ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ) ਵੈਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਲਪਟਾਉਣਗੇ।
Enjoying the pleasure-giving bed along with beautiful women, he remains engrossed in many deceptions and infatuations.
ਬਲਦੀਅੰਦਰਿਤੇਲੁਜਿਉਆਸਾਮਨਸਾਦੁਖਿਵਿਹਾਏ।
ਬਲਦੀ ਹੋਈ ਅੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਲ ਦੇ ਪਾਇਆਂ ਜਿਵੇਂ (ਵਧੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਜ੍ਵਲਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ) ਆਸਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਨਸਾ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਵਿੱਚ (ਉਮਰ) ਗੁਜ਼ਰਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਅੱਗ ਬੁਝਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ 'ਜਿਉ ਪਾਵਕਿ ਈਧਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੈ' ਅਰਥ-ਅੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੱਕੜਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਾਇਆਂ ਵਧੇਰੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਰੱਜਣ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੇ)
They all are fuels to the fire and man spends life in the sufferings of hopes and desires
ਗੁਰਪੂਰੇਵਿਣੁਜਮਪੁਰਿਜਾਏ।੧੪।
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਾਝ ਧਰਮਰਾਜ ਦੀ ਪੁਰੀ ਜਾਏਗਾ।
He has to reach the abode of Yama (death god) if he remains without the perfect Guru.

ਲਖਤੀਰਥਲਖਦੇਵਤੇਪਾਰਸਲਖਰਸਾਇਣੁਜਾਣੈ।
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਤੀਰਥ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਦੇਵਤੇ, ਲਖਾ ਪਾਰਸ ਅਰ ਲਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਰਸਾਇਣੀ (ਲੋਕ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਰਸਾਇਣ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ) ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ।

(ਏਹ ਸਭ ਉਸ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਦਾਤ ਹਨ, ਹੁਣ ਸੋਚੋ ਤਾਂ) ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾਨਾ ਦੀ ਕੀਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ, (ਉਸ) ਦਾਤੇ ਦਾ ਕੌਣ ਲੇਖਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
When charities bestowed cannot be evaluated, how can one describe the extent of the bestower.
ਕੁਦਰਤਿਕਾਦਰਨੋਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ।੧੫।
(ਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ) ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੀ 'ਕੁਦਰਤ' ਤੋਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਈਏ।
This whole creation is sacrifice unto that creator Lord.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੬
ਰਤਨਾਦੇਖੈਸਭੁਕੋਰਤਨਪਾਰਖੂਵਿਰਲਾਕੋਈ।
ਰਤਨਾਂ (ਯਾ ਪਾਠਾਂਤ੍ਰ-ਰੱਤਕਾਂ=ਲਾਲੜੀਆਂ) ਨੂੰ ਸਭ ਕੋਈ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਰਤਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਾਰਖੂ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ (ਜਗ੍ਯਾਸੂ) ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The jewels are beholden by all but the jeweller is any rare one who test checks the jewels.
ਰਾਗਨਾਦਸਭਕੋਸੁਣੈਸਬਦਸੁਰਤਿਸਮਝੈਵਿਰਲੋਈ।
ਰਾਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ (ਪਰੰਤੂ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੈ।
All listen to the melody and rhythm but a rare one understands the mystery of Word consciousness,
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਰਤਨਪਦਾਰਥਾਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਮਿਲਿਮਾਲਪਰੋਈ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹਨ (ਏਹ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ (ਵਿਚ) ਮਿਲਦੇ (ਮਾਨੋਂ) ਮਾਲਾ ਵਿਖੇ ਪਰੋਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ।
The Sikhs of the Guru are pearls who are strung in the garland in the form of congregation.
ਹੀਰੈਹੀਰਾਬੇਧਿਆਸਬਦਸੁਰਤਿਮਿਲਿਪਰਚਾਹੋਈ।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਰੂਪੀ) ਹੀਰੇ ਨਾਲ (ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਰੂਪੀ) ਹੀਰਾ ਵਿੰਨ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਗਿਆ (ਉਸ ਨੇ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਖੇ ਸੁਰਤ ਮਿਲਾਕੇ ਤਸੱਲੀ ਪਾ ਲਈ।
Only his consciousness remains merged in the Word whose mind diamond remains cut by the diamond of Word, the Guru.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਪੂਰਨਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਗੁਰੁਗੋਵਿੰਦੁਸਿਞਾਣੈਸੋਈ।
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਅਤੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਤੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੂੰ ਉਸੇ ਨੇ ਸਿਾਣਿਆ ਹੈ।
The fact that the transcendental Brahm is the prefect Brahm and the Guru is God, is only identified by a gurmukh, the Guru-orientated one.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਸਹਜਿਘਰੁਪਿਰਮਪਿਆਲਾਜਾਣੁਜਣੋਈ।
ਉਸ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਨੂੰ 'ਸੁਖਫਲ' ਤੇ ਸਹਿਜ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ (ਰੂਪੀ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ) ਦਾ ਪਿਆਲਾ (ਆਪੇ) ਜਾਣਕੇ (ਪੀਕੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਜਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਪਿਲਾਕੇ ਮਸਤ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Only gurmukhs enter the abode of inner knowledge to attain fruits of delight and only they know the delight of the cup of love and make others also know it.
ਗੁਰੁਚੇਲਾਚੇਲਾਗੁਰੁਹੋਈ।੧੬।
(ਉਹੀ) ਗੁਰੂ (ਹੋਕੇ) ਚੇਲਾ ਹੈ, (ਅਰ) ਚੇਲਾ ਹੋਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ। (ਦੋ ਨਾਉਂ, ਰੂਪ ਇਕੋ ਹੈ, ਜਿਹਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਅਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਅੰਗਦ ਜੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਚੇਲਾ ਅਰ ਚੇਲਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ, ਇਕ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ)।
Then the Guru and the disciple become identical.

ਮਾਣਸਜਨਮੁਅਮੋਲੁਹੈਹੋਇਅਮੋਲੁਸਾਧਸੰਗੁਪਾਏ।
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਨਮ ਅਮੋਲਕ, ਹੈ (ਪਰੰਤੂ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਣ ਨਾਲ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਕੌਡੀਓਂ ਖੋਟਾ ਹੈ)।
Human life is invaluable and by being born man gets the company of the holy congregation.
ਅਖੀਦੁਇਨਿਰਮੋਲਕਾਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਦਰਸਧਿਆਨਲਿਵਲਾਏ।
ਦੋਵੇਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕ (ਸੁਗਾਤ ਹਨ, ਪਰੰਤੁ ਜੇ) ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਦੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਲਿਵ (ਬ੍ਰਿਤਿ) ਲਗ ਜਾਵੇ।
Both the eyes are invaluable who behold the true Guru and concentrating upon the Guru remain immersed in Him.
ਮਸਤਕੁਸੀਸੁਅਮੋਲੁਹੈਚਰਣਸਰਣਿਗੁਰੁਧੂੜਿਸੁਹਾਏ।
ਮੱਥਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਿਰ (ਤਦ) ਅਮੋਲਕ ਹਨ (ਜਦੋਂ) ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਲੱਗੇ ਤਾਂ।
The forehead is also invaluable which remaining in the shelter of the feet of the Guru adorns itself with the dust of the Guru.
ਜਿਹਬਾਸ੍ਰਵਣਅਮੋਲਕਾਸਬਦਸੁਰਤਿਸੁਣਿਸਮਝਿਸੁਣਾਏ।
ਜਿਹਬਾ ਅਤੇ ਕੰਨ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਤਦ ਹਨ, ਜਦ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ (ਕੰਨ) ਸੁਣਨ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਤ (ਸਹਿਜੇ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰੇ, ਗੁਰ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਵਿਚ ਖਚਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਏ ਤੇ ਉਸ ਜਿਹਬਾ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਚ) ਸਮਝਕੇ ਸਿਖਾਵੇ।
Tongue and ears are also invaluable which carefully understanding and listening to the Word make other people also understand and listen.
ਹਸਤਚਰਣਨਿਰਮੋਲਕਾਗੁਰਮੁਖਮਾਰਗਿਸੇਵਕਮਾਏ।
ਹੱਥ ਤੇ ਪੈਰ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਕ (ਤਦ ਹਨ ਜਦੋਂ ਪੈਰ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਰਗ ਪੁਰ ਚੱਲਣ (ਅਤੇ ਹੱਥ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ) ਟਹਿਲ ਕਰਨ।
Hands and feet are also invaluable which move on the way of becoming gurmukh and perform service.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਰਿਦਾਅਮੋਲੁਹੈਅੰਦਰਿਗੁਰੁਉਪਦੇਸੁਵਸਾਏ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਿਦਾ ਅਮਲੋਕ ਹੈ, (ਜਦੋਂ) ਅੰਦਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਵਸਾ ਲਵੇ।
Invaluable is the heart of gurmukh wherein resides the teaching of the Guru.
ਪਤਿਪਰਵਾਣੈਤੋਲਿਤੁਲਾਏ।੧੭।
(ਅਤੇ ਜਦੋਂ) ਪਤ ਦੇ ਵੱਟੇ ਦੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਤੋਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਤੁਲ ਜਾਵੇ, (ਯਥਾ: “ਪਤਿ ਪਰਵਾਣਾ ਪਿਛੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੋਲਿਆ ਜਾਪੈ॥” ਅਰਥਾਤ-ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਚ ਇੱਜ਼ਤ ਰਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਰਿਹਾ)।
Whosoever becomes equal to such gurmukhs, is respected in the court of the Lord.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੮
ਰਕਤੁਬਿੰਦੁਕਰਿਨਿਮਿਆਚਿਤ੍ਰਚਲਿਤ੍ਰਬਚਿਤ੍ਰਬਣਾਇਆ।
(ਮਾਂ ਦੀ) ਰਕਤ ਤੇ (ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ) ਬੀਰਜ ਦਾ ਪੁਤਲਾ ਹੋਕੇ ਸਿਥਿਤ ਹੋਇਆ, ਉਸ ਥੋਂ ਅਚਰਜ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਨਕਸ਼ਾ (ਰੂਪ) ਈਸ਼ਰ ਨੇ ਬਣਾਇਆ।
From the blood of mother and semen of father the human body was created and the Lord accomplished this wonderful feat.
ਗਰਭਕੁੰਡਵਿਚਿਰਖਿਆਜੀਉਪਾਇਤਨੁਸਾਜਿਸੁਹਾਇਆ।
(ਮਾਂ ਦੇ) ਗਰਭ ਕੁੰਡ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਖਿਆ (ਜੀਉ) ਚੇਤਨ ਸੱਤਾ ਪਾਕੇ (ਛੀ ਮਹੀਨਿਆਂ ਪਿਛੋਂ) ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸਰੀਰ ਸਾਜ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
This human body was kept in the well of the womb. Then life was infused in it and its grandeur was further enhanced.
ਮੁਹੁਅਖੀਦੇਨਕੁਕੰਨਹਥਪੈਰਦੰਦਵਾਲਗਣਾਇਆ।
ਮੂੰਹ (ਖਾਣ ਲਈ), ਅੱਖਾਂ (ਦੇਖਣ ਲਈ), ਨੱਕ (ਸੁੰਘਣ ਲਈ), ਕੰਨ (ਸੁਨਣ ਲਈ), ਹੱਥ (ਕੰਮ ਲਈ), ਪੈਰ (ਚਲਣ ਲਈ), ਦੰਦ (ਚਿੱਥਣ ਲਈ, ਵਾਲ (ਸੋਭਾ ਤੇ ਅਰੋਗਤਾ ਦੀ ਰਖਿਆ ਲਈ ਮਾਨੋ) ਗਿਣਕੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ (ਭਾਵ ਸਭ ਲੋੜਾਂ ਪੂਰਨ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ)।
Mouth, eyes, nose, ears, hands, teeth, hair etc. were bestowed upon it.
ਦਿਸਟਿਸਬਦਗਤਿਸੁਰਤਿਲਿਵੈਰਾਗਰੰਗਰਸਪਰਸਲੁਭਾਇਆ।
ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟ (ਓਹ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਜੋ ਅਖਾਂ ਥਾਣੀ ਦੇਖੀਦੀ ਹੈ), ਸ਼ਬਦ (ਉਹ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਜੋ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਥਾਣੀ ਅਵਾਜ਼ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ), ਗਤ (ਉਹ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਜੋ ਸਾਰੇ ਅੰਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਿੱਲਣ ਜੁਲਣ ਦੀ ਸੱਤਾ ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਚੇਸ਼ਟਾ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ), ਸੁਰਤ (ਉਹ ਸਾਖੀ ਸੱਤਾ ਜੋ ਗਿਆਨ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਅਰ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਨੂੰ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ), ਲਿਵ (ਉਹ ਸੱਤਾ ਜ
Man was given sight, speech, power of listening and consciousness of merging in the Word. For his ears, eyes, tongue and skin, the form, joy, smell etc. were created.
ਉਤਮੁਕੁਲੁਉਤਮੁਜਨਮੁਰੋਮਰੋਮਗਣਿਅੰਗਸਬਾਇਆ।
ਉੱਤਮ ਕੁਲ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਤੂ ਵਿਚ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੁੱਲ ਉੱਤਮ ਹੈ) ਵਿਚ ਉੱਤਮ ਜਨਮ (ਉਪਰ ਕਹੀਆਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਸੰਯੁਕਤ 'ਜਿਹ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਆਰੋਗ ਕੰਚਨ ਦੇਹੀ' ਮਿਲਿਆ) ਗੁਣ (ਐਨੇ ਦੇਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਮਾਏ ਕਿ) ਰੋਮ ਰੋਮ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ (ਮੂਜਬ) ਗੁਣ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ।
By giving the best family (of human being) and birth in it, the Lord god gave shape to one and all organs.
ਬਾਲਬੁਧਿਮੁਹਿਦੁਧਿਦੇਕਰਿਮਲਮੂਤ੍ਰਸੂਤ੍ਰਵਿਚਿਆਇਆ।
ਬਾਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ (ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਖੇ) ਦੁੱਧ (ਮਾਂ) ਦੇਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮਲ ਤੇ ਮੂਤਰ (ਜਦ ਦੋ) ਸੋਤਰ (ਕਰਮ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਯ) ਵਿਖੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਤਦ ਮਾਂ ਉਠਾਕੇ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਦੀ ਟਹਿਲ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ)।
During infancy, mother pours milk into the mouth and make (the baby) defecate.
ਹੋਇਸਿਆਣਾਸਮਝਿਆਕਰਤਾਛਡਿਕੀਤੇਲਪਟਾਇਆ।
(ਜਦ ਜੀਵ) ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਸਮਝਣ ਲੱਗਾ (ਤਦੋਂ) ਕਰਤਾਰ (ਦਾ ਨਾਮ) ਵਿਸਾਰਕੇ ('ਕੀਤੇ' ਕਹੀਏ) ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਲਪਟ ਗਿਆ।
When grown up, he (man) leaving aside the creator Lord becomes engrossed with His creation.
ਗੁਰਪੂਰੇਵਿਣੁਮੋਹਿਆਮਾਇਆ।੧੮।
ਪੂਰਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਾਝ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੇ ਮੋਹਤ ਕਰ ਲੀਤਾ।
Without the perfect Guru, man goes on to be engrossed into the web of maya.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੯
ਮਨਮੁਖਮਾਣਸਦੇਹਤੇਪਸੂਪਰੇਤਅਚੇਤਚੰਗੇਰੇ।
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇਹੀ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਅਚੇਤ ਪਸੂ ਅਤੇ ਪਰੇਤ ਚੰਗੇਰੇ ਹਨ (ਇਸਦਾ ਕਾਰਣ ਅਗਲੀਆਂ ਦੋ ਤੁਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਖੋਲ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Animals and ghosts said to be without wisdom are better than manmukh the mind-orientated.
ਹੋਇਸੁਚੇਤਅਚੇਤਹੋਇਮਾਣਸੁਮਾਣਸਦੇਵਲਿਹੇਰੇ।
(ਮਨਮੁਖ) ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੋਕੇ ਫੇਰ ਅਚੇਤ ਹੋ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਅਤੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਹੋਕੇ ਮਨੁਖ ਵੱਲ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਮਨੁਖ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Even being wise the man becomes fool and goes on looking towards men (to meet his selfish ends).
ਪਸੂਨਮੰਗੈਪਸੂਤੇਪੰਖੇਰੂਪੰਖੇਰੂਘੇਰੇ।
ਪਸੂ ਪਸੂ ਦੇ ਅੱਗੇ ਹੱਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਟੱਡਦਾ, ਪੰਖ ਪੰਖ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਘੇਰਦਾ (ਭਾਵ ਇਕ ਦੂਏ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਨਹੀਂ ਤੱਕਦੇ)।
An animal from animals and a bird from birds never ask for anything.
ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹਲਖਜੂਨਿਵਿਚਿਉਤਮਮਾਣਸਜੂਨਿਭਲੇਰੇ।
ਚਉਰਾਸੀ ਲਖ ਜੋਨੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਮਾਣਸ ਜੋਨੀ ਉੱਤਮ ਅਤੇ ਭਲੀ ਹੈ।
Among eighty-four lakh species of life, the human life is the best one.
ਉਤਮਮਨਬਚਕਰਮਕਰਿਜਨਮੁਮਰਣਭਵਜਲੁਲਖਫੇਰੇ।
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਬਚਨਾਂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉੱਤਮ ਹੈ, (ਪਰੰਤੂ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੋਣ ਨਾਲ) ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਦੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਫੇਰ (ਇਸਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਚੰਬੜ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Having even the best mind, speech and actions, man goes on transmigtraing in the ocean of life and death.
ਰਾਜਾਪਰਜਾਹੋਇਕੈਸੁਖਵਿਚਿਦੁਖੁਹੋਇਭਲੇਭਲੇਰੇ।
ਰਾਜਾ (ਹੋਵੇ ਜਾਂ) ਪਰਜਾ (ਰੱਯਤ) (ਕਿੱਡਾ ਹੀ) ਭਲਿਆਂ ਥੋਂ ਭਲਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਸੁਖ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੁਖ ਭੋਗਣਾ ਹੀ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਜੀਵ ਇਸ ਦੀ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਉੱਤਮਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਗਵਾ ਬੈਠਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਰ ਨਿਜ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Whether it is a king or the people, even the good persons suffer the fear (of going away) from pleasure.

ਕੁੱਤੇ ਨੂੰ ਜੇ ਰਾਜ ਤੇ ਬਹਾਲੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਓਹ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਚੱਕੀ ਦੇ ਚੱਟਣ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਊ, (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਉੱਤਮ ਜਨਮ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜਦ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਤਦ ਰਾਜ ਰੂਪ ਗੁਣ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਨੇ ਦੇਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਕਥਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖ ਭੋਗਣ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਚੱਕੀ ਚੱਟਣ
Dog, even if enthroned, according to its basic nature goes on to lick the flourmill at the fall of darkness.
ਗੁਰਪੂਰੇਵਿਣੁਗਰਭਵਸੇਰੇ।੧੯।
(ਇਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਲਓ, ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ) ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨਮੁਖਤਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ) ਗਰਭ ਵਿਚ ਵਾਸਾ ਮਿਲੇਗਾ।
Without the perfect Guru one has to stay in the abode of womb i.e. the transmigration never ends.
ਪਉੜੀ੨੦
ਵਣਿਵਣਿਵਾਸੁਵਣਾਸਪਤਿਚੰਦਨੁਬਾਝੁਨਚੰਦਨੁਹੋਈ।
ਜਿੱਕੁਰ (ਵਣਾਸਪਤਿ=) ਬਨਸਪਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ ਦਾ ਵਾਸਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਨਾਨ੍ਹਾ ਭਾਂਤ ਦੇ ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ ਹਨ, ਪਰੰਤੂ (ਇਕ) ਚੰਦਨ ਦੇ ਬੂਟੇ ਬਾਝ ਚੰਦਨ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
The forests are replete with vegetation but without sandalwood, the fragrance of sandal does not occur in it.
ਪਰਬਤਿਪਰਬਤਿਅਸਟਧਾਤੁਪਾਰਸਬਾਝੁਨਕੰਚਨੁਸੋਈ।
ਪਹਾੜ ਪਹਾੜ ਵਿਖੇ ਅੱਠ ਧਾਤਾ (ਲੋਹਾ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਆਦਿ ਵਿਦਮਾਨ) ਹਨ (ਪਰੰਤੂ) ਪਾਰਸ ਬਾਝ ਉਹ ਸੋਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ(ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀਆਂ, ਅੱਗੇ ਦਾਰਸ੍ਟਾਂਤ ਦਸਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Minerals are there on all the mountain but without the philosopher's stone they do not transform into gold.
ਚਾਰਿਵਰਣਿਛਿਅਦਰਸਨਾਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਵਿਣੁਸਾਧੁਨਕੋਈ।
ਚਾਰੇ ਵਰਣ ਛੀ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਹਨ) ਸਾਧੂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੇ ਬਾਝ ਕੋਈ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) 'ਸਾਧੂ' (ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ)।
None among the four varnas and the scholars of the six philosophies can become (true) sadhu without the company of saints.
ਗੁਰਉਪਦੇਸੁਅਵੇਸੁਕਰਿਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਜਾਣੋਈ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਖੇ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸ਼ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲੋਕ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਜਾਣਦੇ (ਭਾਵ ਉਸੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਮਗਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ) ਹਨ।
Charged by the teachings of the Guru, gurmukhs understand the importance of the company of the saints.
ਸਬਦਸੁਰਤਿਲਿਵਲੀਣੁਹੋਇਪਿਰਮਪਿਆਲਾਅਪਿਉਪਿਓਈ।
ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਰਤ ਦੀ (ਇਕ ਰਸ ਲਗਨਿ) ਵਿਚ ਲੀਨ ਹੋਕੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰੂਪ ਪਿਆਲਾ ਪੀਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Then, they getting the consciousness attuned to the Word, quaff the cup of nectar of loving devotion.
ਮਨਿਉਨਮਨਿਤਨਿਦੁਬਲੇਦੇਹਬਿਦੇਹਸਨੇਹਸਥੋਈ।
ਮਨ (ਕਰਕੇ) 'ਉਨਮਨ' (ਉਦਾਸ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਥਵਾ) ਤੁਰੀਆ ਪਦ ਵਿਖੇ ਹੋਕੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਦੁਬਲੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਦੇਹ (ਦੀ ਭਾਵਨਾ) ਤੋਂ ਵਿਦੇਹੀ ਹੋਕੇ (ਕਰਤਾਰ ਦੇ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੇ ਸਾਥੀ ਹੋ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਸਰੀਰ ਸੁਤੇ ਸਿੱਧ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਰਸਾਂ ਕਸਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦੇ ਪਰ ਮਨ ਤੁਰੀਆ ਪਦ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The mind now reaching the highest stage of spiritual realisation (turiya) and becoming subtle stabilises in the love of the Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਅਲਖਲਖੋਈ।੨੦।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ (ਅਰਥਾਤ) ਅਲਖ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਲੱਖਤਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Gurmukhs beholding the invisible Lord receive the fruits of that pleasure.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਸਾਧਸੰਗੁਮਾਇਆਅੰਦਰਿਕਰਨਿਉਦਾਸੀ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲੋਕ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਖੇ (ਸੁਖ ਫਲ=) ਸਰੂਪਾਨੰਦ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਖੇ ਉਦਾਸ ਭਾਵ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Gumukhs get pleasure in the company of saints. They remain indifferent to maya though they live in it.
ਜਿਉਜਲਅੰਦਰਿਕਵਲੁਹੈਸੂਰਜਧ੍ਯਾਨੁਅਗਾਸੁਨਿਵਾਸੀ।
ਜਿਕੁਰ ਜਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਕਮਲ ਰਹਿਕੇ ('ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ'ਕਹੀਏ) ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਵੱਲ ਹੀ ਧਿਆਨ ਰਖਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਧੁਨੀ ਇਹ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਤਰ ਜਾਵੇ ਕਵਲ ਉਥੇ ਹੀ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸ ਦੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ, ਪਰ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਦੇਖਣ ਨਾਲ ਝੱਟ ਮੁੰਦਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, 'ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਲੇਪ॥ ਜੈਸ
As a lotus, which remains in water and yet keep its gaze fixed towards the sun, gurmukhs always keep their consciousness attuned to the Lord.
ਚੰਦਨੁਸਪੀਂਵੇੜਿਆਸੀਤਲੁਸਾਂਤਿਸੁਗੰਧਿਵਿਗਾਸੀ।
ਚੰਦਨ (ਦਾ ਬੂਟਾ) ਸੱਪਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਵੇੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਬੀ ਸੀਤਲਤਾ, ਸ਼ਾਂਤਿ ਅਰ ਸੁੰਗਧਤਾਈ ਦਾ ਫੈਲਾਉ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The sandalwood remains entwined by snakes but still it spreads cool and peace-producing fragrance all around.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਸੰਸਾਰਵਿਚਿਸਬਦਸੁਰਤਿਲਿਵਸਹਜਿਬਿਲਾਸੀ।
(ਗੁਰਮੁਖ) ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ (ਰਹਿਕੇ ਹੀ) ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸੁਰਤ ਦੀ ਲਿਵ (ਵਿਚ ਲਗੇ) ਸਹਜ ਪਦ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਲਾਸ (ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਆਨੰਦਤ ਹਨ)।
Gurmukhs living in the world, through the company of the saints keeping the consciousness attuned to the Word, move around in equipoise.
ਜੋਗਜੁਗਤਿਭੋਗਭੁਗਤਿਜਿਣਿਜੀਵਨਮੁਕਤਿਅਛਲਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ।
ਜੋਗ ਦੀ ਜੁਗਤੀ (ਨਾਲ) ਭੋਗ ਦੀ ਭੁਗਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਤ ਕੇ ਜੀਵਣ ਮੁਕਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਅਛਲ ਤੇ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਹੋਕੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
They conquering the technique of yoga and bhog (enjoyment) become liberated in life, undecievable and indestructible.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਪੂਰਨਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਗੁਰਪਰਮੇਸਰੁਆਸਨਿਰਾਸੀ।
ਜਿਕੁਰ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਅਤੇ) ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ (ਸਰਗੁਣ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਤਿਹਾ ਹੀ) ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਆਸਾ ਤੋਂ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਇਕ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ)।
As the transcendetal Brahm is the perfect Brahm , the same way the Guru who is indifferent to hopes and desires is also nothing but God.
ਅਕਥਕਥਾਅਬਿਗਤਿਪਰਗਾਸੀ।੨੧।੧੫।ਪੰਦ੍ਰਾਂ।
(ਦੋਵੇਂ) ਅਕਥ ਕਥਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਅਵਿਗਤ, (ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਅਤੇ) ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਸਰੂਪ ਹਨ।
(Through the Guru) that ineffable story and unmenifest light of the Lord becomes known (to the world).
