ੴਸਤਿਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥

ਪਉੜੀ੧
ਆਦਿਪੁਰਖੁਆਦੇਸੁਕਰਿਆਦਿਪੁਰਖਆਦੇਸੁਕਰਾਇਆ।
ਆਦੀ ਪੁਰਖ(ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ) ਆਦੇਸ ਕੀਤੀ, ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ ਨੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ) ਆਦੇਸ (ਨਿਮਸ਼ਕਾਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਥੋਂ) ਕਰਵਾਈ ਹੈ, (ਯਥਾ-'ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਹੋਇ ਰਹਹਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੋਇ'।)
The Guru bowed before the Lord and the primal Lord made the whole world bow before the Guru.
ਏਕੰਕਾਰਅਕਾਰੁਕਰਿਗੁਰੁਗੋਵਿੰਦੁਨਾਉਸਦਵਾਇਆ।
ਇਕ ਨਿਰਾਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਸਰੂਪ ਰਚਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮ ਸਦਾਇਆ।
The formless Brahm assuming (human) form has got himself called Guru (Har) Gobind.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਪੂਰਨਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਨਿਰਗੁਣਸਰਗੁਣਅਲਖੁਲਖਾਇਆ।
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੂਰਣ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ (ਅਰਥਾਤ) ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਤੋਂ ਸਰਗੁਣ ਹੋਕੇ ਅਲਖ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਲਖਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
Assuming form and being formless at the same time, the transcendental perfect Brahm has made His unmanifest form manifest.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਆਰਾਧਿਆਭਗਤਿਵਛਲੁਹੋਇਅਛਲੁਛਲਾਇਆ।
(ਕੀ ਲੋੜ ਸੀ?) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਨੇ ਅਰਾਧਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ, ਭਗਤ ਵਛਲ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅਛਲ ਹੋਕੇ ਬੀ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਛਲਾਇਆ। (ਭਾਵ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਪਿਛੇ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਧਾਰਕੇ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ ਉਧਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ। ਜਗਤ ਕਿੱਕੁਰ ਰਚਿਆ?)।
The holy congregation adored Him; and being in love with the devotees He, the undeceivable, got deluded (and became manifest in the form of Guru).
ਓਅੰਕਾਰਅਕਾਰਕਰਿਇਕੁਕਵਾਉਪਸਾਉਪਸਾਇਆ।
ਓਅੰਕਾਰ ਨੇ ਇਕ ਵਾਕ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਸਾਰਾ ਪਸਾਰ ਦਿਤਾ।
The Maar assuming form created the whole world by His one commanding vibration.
ਰੋਮਰੋਮਵਿਚਿਰਖਿਓਨੁਕਰਿਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡੁਕਰੋੜਿਸਮਾਇਆ।
(ਇਤਨਾ ਕਿ) ਇਕ ਇਕ ਰੋਮ ਵਿਖੇ ਕ੍ਰੋੜ ਕ੍ਰੋੜ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮੰਡ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਈ ਕਰ ਛੱਡੀ ਹੈ।
In His each trichome He contained millions of universes.
ਸਾਧਜਨਾਗੁਰਚਰਨਧਿਆਇਆ।੧।
ਇਹ (ਲੱਖਤਾ ਕਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ? ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ) ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਹੈ।
The sadhus adore the Lord in the form of the Guru's feet.
ਪਉੜੀ੨
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮਾਰਗਿਪੈਰੁਧਰਿਦਹਿਦਿਸਿਬਾਰਹਵਾਟਨਧਾਇਆ।
(ਜਿਸ ਨੇ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਸਤੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਪੈਰ ਧਰਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਦੋਸ ਦਿਸ਼ਾ ਤੇ ਬਾਰਹਵਾਟ (ਬਿਪਤਾ) ਵਿਖੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੌੜਦਾ (ਅਥਵਾ ਜੋਗੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਰਾਂ ਪੰਥ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾਂ 'ਬਾਰਾਂਵਾਟ' ਬਾਰਾਂ ਰਾਸਾਂ: ਮੀਨ ਮੇਖਾਦਿਕ ਨਿਛੱਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਧਰਮ ਵਿਖੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਫਸਦਾ)।
The guru-oriented treading the path leading towards the Guru does not stray into the paths of the twelve sects of the yogis.
ਗੁਰਮੂਰਤਿਗੁਰਧਿਆਨੁਧਰਿਘਟਿਘਟਿਪੂਰਨਬ੍ਰਹਮਦਿਖਾਇਆ।
(ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਅਗੇ ਹੇਤੂ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ:) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਗੁਰੂ(=ਵੱਡਾ) ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰਕੇ ਘਟ ਘਟ ਵਿਖੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦਿੱਸ ਆਇਆ ਹੈ ('ਕਤ ਜਾਈਐ ਰੇ ਘਰ ਲਾਗੋ ਰੰਗੁ॥ ਮੇਰਾ ਚਿਤੁ ਨ ਚਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਭਇਓ ਪੰਗੁ')।
Concentrating on the form of Guru i.e. Word of the Guru, he adopts it in life and comes face to :face with the perfect Brahm.
ਸਬਦਸੁਰਤਿਉਪਦੇਸੁਲਿਵਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਗੁਰਗਿਆਨੁਜਣਾਇਆ।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ) ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਅਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੀ ('ਲਿਵ') ਸਮਾਧੀ ਨੇ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਜਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।
Concentration of consciousness on the word of the Guru and knowledge bestowed by the Guru provides the awareness about the transcendental Brahm .
ਸਿਲਾਅਲੂਣੀਚਟਣੀਚਰਣਕਵਲਚਰਣੋਦਕੁਪਿਆਇਆ।
ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਅਲੂਣੀ ਸਿਲਾ ਚੱਟਣੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲਾਂ ਦਾ ਚਰਣੋਦਕ (ਆਪ ਪੀਕੇ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪਿਆਇਆ ਹੈ, (ਭਾਵ ਵਿਖਯਾਂ ਥੋਂ ਨਿਰਵਿਖਯ ਹੋਕੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਫਲ ਕੀ ਹੈ?)।
Only such a persen quaffs the nectar of feet-wash of the Guru.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿਨਿਹਚਲੁਚਿਤੁਕਰਿਸੁਖਸੰਪਟਵਿਚਿਨਿਜਘਰੁਛਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤ ਕਰਕੇ, ਨਿਹਚਲ ਚਿਤ ਹੋ ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਡੱਬੇ ਨਿਜ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਥਿਤ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।
This however is nothing less than licking of the tasteless stone. He stablizes his mind in the wisdom of the Guru and reclines comfortably in the chamber of his inner self.
ਪਰਤਨਪਰਧਨਪਰਹਰੇਪਾਰਸਿਪਰਸਿਅਪਰਸੁਰਹਾਇਆ।
ਪਾਰਸ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਣ) ਪਰਸਕੇ ਪਰ ਤਨ (ਪਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ 'ਪਰ ਧਨ') ਪਰਾਏ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੋਂ ਛੱਡਕੇ ਅਪਰਸ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Touching the philosopher's stone in the form of the Guru , he repudiating the wealth and physical body of others remains detached from all.
ਸਾਧਅਸਾਧਿਸਾਧਸੰਗਿਆਇਆ।੨।
(ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਆ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅਸਾਧ (ਵਾਯੂ ਵਤ ਦੁਸ਼ਕਰ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ) ਵਸੀਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਰ ਲੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
For curing his chronic maladies (of evil propensities) he goes to the holy congregation.
ਪਉੜੀ੩
ਜਿਉਵੜਬੀਉਸਜੀਉਹੋਇਕਰਿਵਿਸਥਾਰੁਬਿਰਖੁਉਪਜਾਇਆ।
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਬੋਹੜ ਦਾ ਬੀਜ ਪੁੰਗਰਕੇ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਵਾਲਾ ਬ੍ਰਿਛ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
As the seed of banyan tree getting developed extends itself in the form of a large tree
ਬਿਰਖਹੁਹੋਇਸਹੰਸਫਲਫਲਫਲਵਿਚਿਬਹੁਬੀਅਸਮਾਇਆ।
ਬ੍ਰਿੱਛ ਥੋਂ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਫਲ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਹਰੇਕ ਫਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਬਾਹਲੇ ਬੀਜ ਭਰੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਦਾਰਸ਼ਟਾਂਤ-ਇਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਜਿਹਾ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
and then on that very tree grow thousands of fruits containing myriad seeds (likewise gurmukh makes others like his own self).
ਦੁਤੀਆਚੰਦੁਅਗਾਸਜਿਉਆਦਿਪੁਰਖਆਦੇਸੁਕਰਾਇਆ।
ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਵਿਖੇ ਦੂਜ ਦੇ ਚੰਦ ਵਾਂਙੂੰ 'ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖ' (ਸਭਨਾਂ ਥੋਂ) ਨਮਸਕਾਰਾਂ ਕਰਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
That primal Lord, like the second day's moon in the sky, gets himself worshipped iby one and all.
ਤਾਰੇਮੰਡਲੁਸੰਤਜਨਧਰਮਸਾਲਸਚਖੰਡਵਸਾਇਆ।
ਸੰਤ ਤਾਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੰਡਲਾਂ ਵਾਂਙੂੰ ਧਰਮਸਾਲ ਸਚਖੰਡ (ਰੂਪ ਅਕਾਸ਼) ਵਿਖੇ ਵਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
The saints are constellation inhabiting the abode of truth in the form of religious places.
ਪੈਰੀਪੈਪਾਖਾਕਹੋਇਆਪੁਗਵਾਇਨਆਪੁਜਣਾਇਆ।
ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਖਾਕ ਹੋਕੇ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਪੌਣਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਭਾਵ-ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ) ਆਪਾ ਭਾਵ ਗਵਾਕੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਣਾਉਂਦੇ।
They bowing at the feet and becoming dust of , the feet lose there ego and never allow themselves to be noticed by any one.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਧ੍ਰੂਜਿਵੈਨਿਹਚਲਵਾਸੁਅਗਾਸੁਚੜ੍ਹਾਇਆ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਧ੍ਰੂਹ ਭਗਤ ਵਾਂਙੂੰ (ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਰੂਪ) ਸਚਖੰਡ ਵਿਖੇ ਅਟੱਲ ਵਾਸਾ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
Attainer of the pleasure fruit, the gurmukh lives steadfastly like the pole star in the sky.
ਸਭਤਾਰੇਚਉਫੇਰਿਫਿਰਾਇਆ।੩।
ਸਾਰੇ ਤਾਰੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਰਕ੍ਰਮਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
All the stars revolve around him.
ਪਉੜੀ੪
ਨਾਮਾਛੀਂਬਾਆਖੀਐਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਭਾਇਭਗਤਿਲਿਵਲਾਈ।
ਨਾਮੇ ਨੇ ਜੋ ਜਾਤ ਦਾ ਛੀਂਬਾ ਕਹੀਦਾ ਸੀ, ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਵਿਖੇ ('ਲਿਵ') ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਕੀਤੀ, ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ (ਸਦਰਸ਼)।
Namdev, the calico minter having become gurmukh merged his consciousness in loving devotion.
ਖਤ੍ਰੀਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਦੇਹੁਰੈਉਤਮਜਾਤਿਕਰਨਿਵਡਿਆਈ।
ਦੇਹੁਰੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਉੱਤਮ ਜਾਤ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੋਭਾ ਕਰਨ ਲੱਗੇ।
High caste kshatriyas and Brahmins who went to temple to eulogize the Lord caught hold and ousted Namdev.
ਨਾਮਾਪਕੜਿਉਠਾਲਿਆਬਹਿਪਛਵਾੜੈਹਰਿਗੁਣਗਾਈ।
(ਪੰਡਿਆਂ ਨੇ) ਨਾਮੇ ਨੂੰ ਫੜਕੇ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੱਢ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਉਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਪਿਛਵਾੜੇ ਬੈਠਕੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਜਸ ਗਾਉਣ ਲੱਗਾ।
While sitting in the back yard of the temple, he started singing the praises of the Lord.
ਭਗਤਵਛਲੁਆਖਾਇਦਾਫੇਰਿਦੇਹੁਰਾਪੈਜਿਰਖਾਈ।
(ਹਰੀ ਨੇ ਜੋ) ਭਗਤ ਵਛਲ ਸਦਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਫੇਰ ਕੇ ਪੈਜ ਰਖ ਦਿਤੀ।
The Lord known as kind to devotees turned the face of the temple towards him and maintained His own reputation.
ਦਰਗਹਮਾਣੁਨਿਮਾਣਿਆਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਰਣਾਈ।
ਨਿਮਾਣਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਖੇ ਮਾਣ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਹਨ।
In the shelter of holy congregation, the true Guru and the Lord, the humble ones also get honour.
ਉਤਮੁਪਦਵੀਨੀਚਜਾਤਿਚਾਰੇਵਰਣਪਏਪਗਿਆਈ।
ਉੱਚੀ ਪਦਵੀ ਵਾਲੇ (ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਅਰ) ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤ ਵਾਲੇ (ਸ਼ੂਦ੍ਰ ਲੋਕ, ਗੱਲ ਕੀ) ਚਾਰੇ ਵਰਣ ਨਾਮੇਂ ਦੀ ਪੈਰੀਂ ਆ ਡਿੱਗੇ। (ਇਸ ਪੁਰ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਂਤ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
High, ranking as well as the so-called low castes i.e. all the four as fell at the feet of Namdev
ਜਿਉਨੀਵਾਨਿਨੀਰੁਚਲਿਜਾਈ।੪।
ਜਿੱਕੁਰ ਪਾਣੀ ਨਿਵਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਤੁਰਕੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Just as the water flows down towards low

ਅਸੁਰਭਭੀਖਣੁਭਗਤੁਹੈਬਿਦਰੁਸੁਵਿਖਲੀਪਤਿਸਰਣਾਈ।
ਰਾਖਸ਼ ਬਿਭੀਖਣ ਭਗਤ ਹੋਯਾ, ਬਿਦਰ, ਧ੍ਰੂ ਤੇ ਵੇਸ਼ਵਾ ਸ਼ਰਨੀ ਆਏ।
Saint Vibhisaa a demon, and Vidur son of maid servant came in the shelter of the Lord. Dhanni is known as a jai
ਧੰਨਾਜਟੁਵਖਾਣੀਐਸਧਨਾਜਾਤਿਅਜਾਤਿਕਸਾਈ।
ਧੰਨਾ ਭਗਤ ਜੱਟ ਕਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਸਧਨਾਂ ਜਾਤਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤ ਵਾਲਾ ਕਸਾਈ (ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ)।
And Sadhana was an out caste butcher. Saint Kabir was a weaver
ਭਗਤੁਕਬੀਰੁਜੁਲਾਹੜਾਨਾਮਾਛੀਂਬਾਹਰਿਗੁਣਗਾਈ।
ਕਬੀਰ ਭਗਤ ਜੁਲਾਹਾ, ਨਾਮਾ ਛੀਂਬਾ ਹੋਕੇ ਹਰੀ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਣ ਲੱਗਾ।
And Namdev a calicoprinter who sang the praises of the Lord. Ravidas was a cobbler and saint Sairt belonged to (the so-called ) low barber caste.
ਕੁਲਿਰਵਿਦਾਸੁਚਮਾਰੁਹੈਸੈਣੁਸਨਾਤੀਅੰਦਰਿਨਾਈ।
ਚਮਿਆਰ ਦੀ ਕੁਲ ਵਿਚ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ, (ਸਨਾਤ) ਨੀਵੀਆਂ ਕੌਮਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸੈਣ ਭਗਤ ਨਾਈ (ਅੱਗੇ ਪੰਜਵੀਂ ਛੀਵੀਂ ਤੁਕ ਵਿਚ ਦੋ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਂਤ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Female crow takes care of the fledgelings of nightingale but they ultimately meet their own family.
ਕੋਇਲਪਾਲੈਕਾਵਣੀਅੰਤਿਮਿਲੈਅਪਣੇਕੁਲਜਾਈ।
(ਜਿੱਕੁਰ) ਕਾਂਵਣੀ ਕੋਇਲ ਨੂੰ (ਆਪਣੀ ਅੰਸ਼ ਜਾਣਕੇ) ਪਾਲਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਪਰੰਤੂ) ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ (ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਸੁਣਕੇ ਕੋਇਲਾਂ) ਦੀ ਕੁਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।
Though Yagoda nurtured Krsna, yet he came to be known as the lotus (son) ) of the family of Vasudev.
ਕਿਸਨੁਜਸੋਧਾਪਾਲਿਆਵਾਸਦੇਵਕੁਲਕਵਲਸਦਾਈ।
(ਕ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨ) ਨੂੰ ਜਸੋਧਾਂ (ਗੁਜਰੀ ਨੇ ਬਾਰਾਂ ਵਰ੍ਹੇ) ਪਾਲਿਆ ਸੀ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਵਾਸਦੇਵ ਦੀ ਕੁਲ ਦਾ ਕਵਲ ਹੀ ਕਹਿਲਾਇਆ। (ਇਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਸਨਾਤ ਨਾ ਕਹਿਲਾਏ, ਭਗਤ ਕਹਿਲਾਏ)।
As the pot of any type containing ghee is not said to be bad,
ਘਿਅਭਾਂਡਾਨਵੀਚਾਰੀਐਭਗਤਾਜਾਤਿਸਨਾਤਿਨਕਾਈ।
ਜਿਵੇਂ ਘਿਉ ਦਾ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਚਾਰੀਦਾ (ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੀ (ਉੱਚੀ) ਜਾਤ ਜਾਂ ਨੀਵੀਂ ਜਾਤ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ (ਵਿਚਾਰੀ ਦੀ, ਯਥਾ “ਘਿਅ ਪਟ ਭਾਂਡਾ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ॥')
Likewise, the saints also have no high or low caste whatsoever.
ਚਰਣਕਵਲਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਰਣਾਈ।੫।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇ) ਚਰਣਾਂ ਕਮਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ (ਲੈਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਦਾ ਉੱਤਮ ਹਨ, ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮ ਧਾਮ ਵਿਖੇ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਦੇਣਗੇ।)।

ਮਿਸਰੀ ਡੇਮੂੰਆਂ ਦੀ ਖੱਖਰੋਂ, ਮੱਖੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਥੋਂ ਸ਼ਹਿਤ ਉਤਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
From hornets' nest lump sugar and by honey bees the honey hive is produced.
ਪਾਟਪਟੰਬਰਕੀੜਿਅਹੁਕੁਟਿਕਟਿਸਣੁਕਿਰਤਾਸੁਬਣਾਇਆ।
ਪੱਟ ਦੇ ਕਪੜੇ ਕੀੜਿਆਂ ਥੋਂ (ਬਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਰ) ਸਣ ਨੂੰ ਕਟ ਕੁੱਟਕੇ ਕਾਗਤ ਬਣਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਵੜੇਵਿਆਂ ਥੋਂ ਮਲਮਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਚਿੱਕੜ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕਵਲ (ਅਜਿਹਾ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਪੁਰ) ਭਵਰੇ ਲੋਭਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਜਿਕੂੰ ਕਾਲੇ ਸੱਪ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਮਣੀ ਅਰ ਪੱਥਰਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ, ਹੀਰੇ ਤੇ ਮਾਣਕ ਸ਼ੋਭਦੇ ਹਨ।
A gem remains in the hood of black snake and among the stones are found diamonds and rubies.

(ਹੁਣ ਤਾਤਪਰਜ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ) ਨੀਚ ਜੋਨੀਆਂ ਸਨ(ਪਰ) ਉੱਤਮ ਫਲ ਪਾ ਲਿਆ, (ਤਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਭਗਤ ਜਨ ਨੀਚ ਜਾਤ ਹੋਕੇ ਬੀ ਉੱਚ ਫਲ ਨੂੰ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਏ ਕਿ ਅੱਜ ਤੀਕ ਗ੍ਰੰਥਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਲਿਖੇ ਚਲੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

ਬਲਿਪੋਤਾਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦਦਾਇੰਦਰਪੁਰੀਦੀਇਛਇਛੰਦਾ।
ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਦਾ ਪੋਤ੍ਰਾ (ਅਰਥਾਤ, ਵਿਰੋਚਨ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤ੍ਰ ਰਾਜਾ) ਬਲਿ ਇੰਦ੍ਰਪੁਰੀ ਦੇ ਰਾਜ ਦੀ ਇੱਛਾ ਦਾ ਲੋੜਵੰਦਾ ਸੀ।

ਨੀਚਹੁਨੀਚਸਦਾਵਣਾਕੀੜੀਹੋਇਨਆਪੁਗਣਾਏ।
ਕੀੜੀ ਨੀਵਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਨੀਵਾਂ ਸਦਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਨਿੱਕੀ ਹੋਕੇ) ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਣਾਉਂਦੀ (ਜਾਂ ਕੀੜੀ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ਨੀਚ ਤੋਂ ਨੀਚ ਸਦਾਕੇ ਆਪ ਜਣਾਏ)।
Ants never make themselves noticed and are known lowest among the lowly.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮਾਰਗਿਚਲਣਾਇਕਤੁਖਡੁਸਹੰਸਸਮਾਏ।
(ਜਿਕੂੰ ਮੂੰਹੀ ਕੀੜੀ ਦੇ ਮਗਰ ਸਭ ਚਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤਿਵੇਂ) ਗੁਰਮਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਰਗ ਪੁਰ ਚਲਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਏ (ਫੇਰ ਕੀੜੀ ਵਾਂਙੂੰ) ਇਕ ਖੁੱਡ ਵਿਚ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਈ ਕਰੇ (ਭਾਵ ਪਿਆਰ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿਣ)।
They follow the path of gurmukhs and due to their broad mindedness they live in thousands, in a small hole.
ਘਿਅਸਕਰਦੀਵਾਸੁਲੈਜਿਥੈਧਰੀਤਿਥੈਚਲਿਜਾਏ।
ਘਿਉ ਸ਼ੱਕਰ ਦੀ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜਿਥੇ ਹੋਵੇ ਜਾ ਪਹੁੰਚਦੀ ਹੈ (ਤਿਵੇਂ ਸਤਿਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪੁੱਜਕੇ ਜਾਏ)।
Only by smelling ghee and sugar, they reach the place where these things are kept (gurmukhs also search out he holy congregations).
ਡੁਲੈਖੰਡੁਜੁਰੇਤੁਵਿਚਿਖੰਡੂਦਾਣਾਚੁਣਿਚੁਣਿਖਾਏ।
(ਜੇਕਰ) ਰੇਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਖੰਡ ਡੁੱਲ੍ਹ ਪਵੇ ਉਥੋਂ ਬੀ ਚੁਣ ਚੁਣ ਕੇ ਖੰਡ ਦਾ ਦਾਣਾ ਹੀ ਖਾ ਲਵੇਗੀ। (“ਹਰਿ ਹੈ ਖਾਂਡੁ ਰੇਤੁ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਖਰੀ ਹਾਥੀ ਚੁਨੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ॥ ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਗੁਰਿ ਭਲੀ ਬੁਝਾਈ ਕੀਟੀ ਹੋਇਕੈ ਖਾਇ”॥ ਭਾਵ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲੋਕ ਕੀੜੀ ਹੋਕੇ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਰੂਪੀ ਖੰਡ ਰੇਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਲੀ ਹੋਈ ਬੀ ਚੁਣਕੇ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਅਰਥਾਤ:-”ਸਾਝ

ਭਿ੍ਰੰਗੀ (ਕੀੜੇ ਦੇ) ਡਰ ਨਾਲ ਮਰਕੇ ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗੀ ਹੋਕੇ ਮਾਰ ਜੀਵਾਏ, (ਹੋਰ ਕੀੜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਹਾਧ੍ਯਾਸੋਂ ਮਾਰਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਜਿਹਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਂਤ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਲੋਕ ਜੀਵਤ ਭਾਵ ਥੋਂ ਜਗ੍ਯਾਸੂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਪਰਾਇਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)
Dying of the fear of worm bhringi the ant itself becomes bhringi and makes others also like itself.
ਅੰਡਾਕਛੂਕੂੰਜਦਾਆਸਾਵਿਚਿਨਿਰਾਸੁਵਲਾਏ।
(ਜਿੱਕੁਰ) ਕੱਛੂ ਅਤੇ ਕੂੰਜ ਦੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਆਸਾ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Like the eggs of heron and tortoise, it (ant) remains detached amidst hopes.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਗੁਰਸਿਖੁਸੁਖਫਲੁਪਾਏ।੮।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖਿਆ ਲੈ ਕੇ “ਸੁਖ ਫਲ” ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Similarly gurmukhs also getting educated attain the pleasure fruits.

ਸੂਰਜਪਾਸਿਬਿਆਸੁਜਾਇਹੋਇਭੁਣਹਣਾਕੰਨਿਸਮਾਣਾ।
ਬਿਆਸ ਦੇਵ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ ਜਾਕੇ ਨਿੱਕਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਕੀੜਾ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰਕੇ (ਉੱਚੀ ਸ਼੍ਰਵਾ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੇ ਘੋੜੇ ਦੇ) ਕੰਨ ਵਿਚ ਵੜ ਬੈਠਾ (ਭਾਵ-ਨਿੱਕਾ ਬਣਕੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਹੋਕੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਗੁਣੀ ਤੋਂ ਵਿੱਦ੍ਯਾ ਪਾਈ ਤੇ ਨਿਪੁੰਨ ਹੋਕੇ ਘਰ ਆਇਆ)।

ਪੜਿਵਿਦਿਆਘਰਿਆਇਆਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਬਾਲਮੀਕਮਨਿਭਾਣਾ।
(ਬਾਲਮੀਕ ਬੀ ਨਿਮ੍ਰਭੂਤ ਹੋ) ਵਿੱਦ੍ਯਾ ਪੜ੍ਹਕੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਬਾਲਮੀਕ ਮਨ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਉਂਣਾ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਯਾ।

ਆਦਿਬਿਆਸਵਖਾਣੀਐਕਥਿਕਥਿਸਾਸਤ੍ਰਵੇਦਪੁਰਾਣਾ।
ਆਦਿ ਵ੍ਯਾਸ ਨੇ ਮਥ ਮਥਕੇ ਸ਼ਾਸਤਰ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣਾਂ (ਦੀਆਂ ਸੰਹਤਾਂ) ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ (ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ ਸ਼ਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ)।

ਨਾਰਦਮੁਨੀ ਨੇ (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ) ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਕਿ ਭਗਵਤ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਪੜ੍ਹ, (ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਕੇ ਉਹ) ਪਤੀਜਿਆ (ਭਾਵ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ ਆ ਗਈ।)
Sage Narad preached to him and only after reading the Blia-gavat of devotion he could attain peace.

ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੀ ਹੈ ਅਰ ਪਤਿਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਉਧਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ (ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦਾ) ਬਿਰਦ ਕਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
Association with such humble sadhus is altruistic and makes one habitual liberates of the fallen ones.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਪਤਿਪਰਵਾਣਾ।੯।
ਗੁਰੁਮਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਪਾਇਆ ਹੈ, (ਅਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ) ਪਤ ਪਰਵਾਣ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
Gurmukhs attain pleasure fruits in it and get dignified acceptance in the court of the Lord.

ਬਾਰਹਵਰ੍ਹੇਗਰਭਾਸਿਵਸਿਜਮਦੇਹੀਸੁਕਿਲਈਉਦਾਸੀ।
ਸੁਕਦੇਵ ਨੇ ਬਾਰਾਂ ਵਰਹੇ (ਮਾਤਾ ਦੇ) ਗਰਭ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਹਿਕੇ ਜੰਮਦੇ ਸਾਰ ਹੀ 'ਉਦਾਸੀ' ਲੀਤੀ।
Having remained in his mother's womb for twelve years, Sukadev adopted detachedness right form the very time of his birth.
ਮਾਇਆਵਿਚਿਅਤੀਤਹੋਇਮਨਹਠਬੁਧਿਨਬੰਦਿਖਲਾਸੀ।
ਮਾਇਆ ਵਿਚ ਅਤੀਤ (ਵਿਰੱਕਤੀ ਤਾਂ) ਹੋਇਆ, (ਪ੍ਰੰਤੂ) ਮਨ ਦੀ ਹਠ ਬੁਧੀ ਦੀ ਬੰਦ ਖਲਾਸ ਨਾ ਹੋਈ।
Though he went beyond maya yet because of his intellect pushed by stubbornness of mind, he could not attain liberation.

ਬਿਆਸ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਕਿ ਜਨਕ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਸਹਿਜ ਅਭ੍ਯਾਸੀ ਹੈ (ਉਸ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ।
His father Vyas made him understand that he should adopt king Janak as his guru who is well grounded in the art of remaining in equipoise.
ਤਜਿਦੁਰਮਤਿਗੁਰਮਤਿਲਈਸਿਰਧਰਿਜੂਠਿਮਿਲੀਸਾਬਾਸੀ।
ਹੁਣ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ (ਹਠ) ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡਕੇ ਸਿਰਪੁਰ ਜੂਠੀਆਂ ਪੱਤਲਾਂ ਸਹਾਰ ਕਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿੱਖ੍ਯਾ ਲੀਤੀ (ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸੋਂ 'ਸ਼ਾਬਾਸੀ'=) ਥਾਪੀ ਮਿਲੀ।
Doing so, and divesting himself of the evil wisdom,he acquired he wisdom of Guru and as ordered by his guru he carried left overs on his head and thus earned pats from the guru.

When inspired by the teachings of the guru he repudiated ego, the whole world accepted him as guru and became his servant .

(ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਂਤ) ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈਣਾ, ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਖਾਕ ਹੋਣਾ, ਗੁਰਮਤ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ ਭਗਤੀ ਦਾ (ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੇ) ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ, (ਭਾਵ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ)।
By falling at the feet, by becoming dust of the feet and by the wisdom of the guru, loving devotion came up in him.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਸਹਜਨਿਵਾਸੀ।੧੦।
(ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ (ਸ਼ਾਂਤਿ ਸਰੂਪ) ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਦੇ ਸਹਜੇ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
As a gurmukh attaining pleasure fruit he got himself lodged in equipoise.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੧
ਰਾਜਜੋਗੁਹੈਜਨਕਦੇਵਡਾਭਗਤੁਕਰਿਵੇਦੁਵਖਾਣੈ।
ਰਾਜਾ ਜਨਕ ਰਾਜ ਅਤੇ ਜੋਗ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਕਰਦਾ ਸੀ ਵੱਡਾ ਭਗਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਦ ਨੇ ਵਰਣਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
Janak is a king as well as a yogi and the books of knowledge describe him as great devotee.
ਸਨਕਾਦਿਕਨਾਰਦਉਦਾਸਬਾਲਸੁਭਾਇਅਤੀਤੁਸੁਹਾਣੈ।
ਸਨਕਾਦਿਕ ਤੇ ਨਾਰਦ ਏਹ ਬਾਲ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਥੋਂ ਹੀ ਅਤੀਤ ਅਤੇ ਉਦਾਸ ਰਹੇ (ਇਹੋ ਦਸ਼ਾ) ਚੰਗੀ ਲੱਗਦੀ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ;
Sanaks and Narad from their very childhood were of detached nature and adorned themselves with indifference to all.
ਜੋਗਭੋਗਲਖਲੰਘਿਕੈਗੁਰਸਿਖਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਨਿਰਬਾਣੈ।
ਪਰੰਤੂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੀ ਰਾਜ ਅਤੇ ਜੋਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੰਘਕੇ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਵਿਖੇ (ਨਿਰਬਾਣੈ) ਨਿਰਬੰਧਨ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਾਰਨ ਇਹ ਕਿ ਜੋ)
Going beyond millions of detachments and enjoyments, the Sikhs of Guru also remain humble m the holy congregation.
ਆਪੁਗਣਾਇਵਿਗੁਚਣਾਆਪੁਗਵਾਏਆਪੁਸਿਞਾਣੈ।
ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਗਿਣਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਖਰਾਬ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪਰ ਜੋ) ਹੰਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਤ੍ਯਾਗ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਓਹ ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਸਿਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਭਾਵ-ਸਰੂਪ ਦੀ ਲੱਖਤਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ)।
He who gets himself counted or noticed goes astray in illusions; but he who loses his ego infact identifies his self.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮਾਰਗੁਸਚਦਾਪੈਰੀਪਵਣਾਰਾਜੇਰਾਣੈ।
ਇਸੇ ਲਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਰਸਤਾ ਸੱਚ ਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਰਾਜੇ) ਵੱਡੇ ਅਤੇ (ਰਾਣੇ) ਛੋਟੇ (ਸਾਰੇ) ਪੈਰੀਂ ਆ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Gurmukh' s way is the way of truth whereby all the kings and emperors fall on his feet.
ਗਰਬੁਗੁਮਾਨੁਵਿਸਾਰਿਕੈਗੁਰਮਤਿਰਿਦੈਗਰੀਬੀਆਣੈ।
(ਓਹ ਬੀ) ਗਰਬ ਤੇ ਗੁਮਾਨ ਨੂੰ (ਮਨੋਂ ਤਨੋਂ) ਹਟਾਕੇ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਤੇ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਨੂੰ ਰਿਦੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਧਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਫਲ ਇਹ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ)
Treader of this path, forgetting his ego and pride cherishes humility in his heart through the wisdom of the Guru.
ਸਚੀਦਰਗਹਮਾਣੁਨਿਮਾਣੈ।੧੧।
ਕਿ ਸੱਚੀ ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਖੇ (ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ) ਨਿਮਾਣਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਣ (ਆਦਰ) ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ।
Such an humble person gets respects and regards in the true court.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੨
ਸਿਰੁਉਚਾਅਭਿਮਾਨੁਵਿਚਿਕਾਲਖਭਰਿਆਕਾਲੇਵਾਲਾ।
ਸਿਰ ਹੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਉੱਚਾ ਹੈ, ਕਾਲਖ ਦਾ ਭਰਿਆ ਕਾਲੇ ਵਾਲਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ।
Proud head remains erect and high yet it is coveved by the blackness of hair.
ਭਰਵਟੇਕਾਲਖਭਰੇਪਿਪਣੀਆਕਾਲਖਸੂਰਾਲਾ।
ਭਰਵੱਟੇ ਕਾਲਖ ਦੇ ਭਰੇ ਹਨ, ਝਿੰਮਣੀਆਂ ਕਾਲੀਆਂ ਸੂਲਾਂ (ਬਰਛਿਆਂ) ਵਾਂਗੂੰ ਹਨ।
Eyebrows are full of blackness and the eye lashes are also like black thorns.
ਲੋਇਣਕਾਲੇਜਾਣੀਅਨਿਦਾੜੀਮੁਛਾਕਰਿਮੁਹਕਾਲਾ।
ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਕਾਲੇ ਜਾਣੀਦੇ ਹਨ, ਦਾੜ੍ਹੀ ਮੁੱਛਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਸਾਰਾ) ਮੂੰਹ ਕਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
Eyes are black (in India) and like wise beards and moustaches are also black.
ਨਕਅੰਦਰਿਨਕਵਾਲਬਹੁਲੂੰਇਲੂੰਇਕਾਲਖਬੇਤਾਲਾ।
ਨੱਕ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨੱਕ ਦੇ ਵਾਲ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਹਨ, ਲੂੰ ਲੂੰ ਕਾਲਖ ਵਾਲਾ ਬੇਢੰਗਾ (ਸਰੂਪ) ਹੈ।
Many trichomes are there in the nose and all of them are black.
ਉਚੈਅੰਗਨਪੂਜੀਅਨਿਚਰਣਧੂੜਿਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਧਰਮਸਾਲਾ।
ਉੱਚੇ ਹੋਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਅੰਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਣ ਧੂੜ ਧਰਮਸਾਲਾ (ਵਿਖੇ ਪੂਜੀਦੀ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜੋ)
Organs placed higher are not worshipped and the dust of the feet of gurmukhs is adorable like holy places .
ਪੈਰਾਨਖਮੁਖਉਜਲੇਭਾਰੁਉਚਾਇਨਿਦੇਹੁਦੁਰਾਲਾ।
ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਨੌਂਹ ('ਮੁਖ ਉੱਜਲੇ') ਚਿੱਟੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਵਲੇ ਹਨ, ਦੇਹ ਭਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਭਾਰ ਚੁੱਕਦੇ ਹਨ (ਉਪਕਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Feet and nails are blessed because they carry`the load of the whole body.
ਸਿਰਧੋਵਣੁਅਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰਹੈਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਚਰਣੋਦਕਜਗਿਭਾਲਾ।
ਸਿਰ ਧੋਕੇ (ਪੀਣਾ) ਆਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਣਾਂਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਜਗਤ ਭਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ; (ਇਸੇ ਕਾਰਣ)
The head wash is considered dirty but the feet wash of the gurmukhs is sought after by the whole world.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਸਹਜੁਸੁਖਾਲਾ।੧੨।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਫਲ ਪਾਕੇ 'ਸਹਿਜੇ ਹੀ' (ਸੁਭਾਵਕ ਹੀ) ਸੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਬਣੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Attaining the pleasure fruit the gurmukhs in their equipoise, remain as the store house of all delights.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੩
ਜਲਵਿਚਿਧਰਤੀਧਰਮਸਾਲਧਰਤੀਅੰਦਰਿਨੀਰਨਿਵਾਸਾ।
ਧਰਤੀ ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਟਿਕੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ (ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਚੁਫੇਰੇ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹਨ) ਅਰ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਬੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਦਾ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਹੈ (ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਦਰਯਾ ਤੇ ਝੀਲਾਂ ਹਨ)।
Earth, the abode for the conduct of dharma is supported by water and inside earth,too, resides water.
ਚਰਨਕਵਲਸਰਣਾਗਤੀਨਿਹਚਲਧੀਰਜੁਧਰਮੁਸੁਵਾਸਾ।
(ਭਗਤਾਂ ਦੇ) ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਚਰਣ ਛੁਂਹਦੇ ਹਨ) ਧੀਰਜ ਧਰਮ ਅਤੇ ਖਿਮਾਂ ਆਦਿ ਗੁਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਧਰਤੀ) ਪੂਰਤ ਹੈ।
Coming into the shelter of the lotus feet (of the Guru), the earth is pervaded by the fragrance of firm fortitude, and dharma.
ਕਿਰਖਬਿਰਖਕੁਸਮਾਵਲੀਬੂਟੀਜੜੀਘਾਹਅਬਿਨਾਸਾ।
ਖੇਤੀਆਂ, ਬ੍ਰਿਛ ਫੁਲਵਾੜੀਆਂ, ਬੂਟੀ, ਜੜੀ, ਘਾਹ ਅਖੁੱਟ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
On it (earth) grow trees, lines of flowers, herbs and grass which never exhaust.
ਸਰਸਾਇਰਗਿਰਿਮੇਰੁਬਹੁਰਤਨਪਦਾਰਥਭੋਗਬਿਲਾਸਾ।
ਸਰ, ਸਮੁੰਦਰ, ਪਰਬਤ, ਮੇਰੁ, (ਧੌਲੀਦਾਰ) ਬਾਹਲੇ ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਲਾਸ।
Many a pond, ocean, mountain, jewel and pleasure giving material are there on it.
ਦੇਵਸਥਲਤੀਰਥਘਣੇਰੰਗਰੂਪਰਸਕਸਪਰਗਾਸਾ।
ਦੇਵ ਮੰਦਰ, ਤੀਰਥ, ਰੰਗ ਰੂਪ ਕਈ ਰਸਾਂ ਕਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ।
Many godly places, pilgrimage centres, hues, forms, edibles and inedibles come forth from it.
ਗੁਰਚੇਲੇਰਹਰਾਸਿਕਰਿਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਗੁਣਤਾਸਾ।
ਗੁਰ ਚੇਲੇ ਦੀ ਰਾਹ ਰੀਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੈ।
Owing to the tradition of the Guru-disciple, the holy congregation of the gurmukhs is also a similar ocean of virtues.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਆਸਨਿਰਾਸਾ।੧੩।
(ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜੋ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ (ਹਨ) ਆਸਾ ਥੋਂ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਨ, (ਏਸ ਲਈ) ਸੁਖ ਫਲ (ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Remaining detached amidst hopes and desires is the pleasure fruit for the gurmukhs.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੪
ਰੋਮਰੋਮਵਿਚਿਰਖਿਓਨੁਕਰਿਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਕਰੋੜਿਸਮਾਈ।
(ਨਿਰਗੁਣ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨੇ) ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਈ ਰੋਮ ਰੋਮ ਵਿਖੇ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਆਪਣੀ ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਵਿਖੇ) ਰੱਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
The Lord has subsumed crores of universes in His each trichome.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਪੂਰਨਬ੍ਰਹਮੁਸਤਿਪੁਰਖਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਸੁਖਦਾਈ।
ਉਸੇ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨੇ 'ਸਤਿਗੁਰ' (ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ) ਸਤ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾ (ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ਰੂਪ ਰਚਿਆ)।
The true Guru form of that primal perfect and transcendental Brahm is bestower of delights.
ਚਾਰਿਵਰਨਗੁਰਸਿਖਹੋਇਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਰਣਾਈ।
ਚਾਰੇ ਵਰਣ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸਿਖ ਹੋਕੇ, ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਆਏ।
All the four vamas come to the shelter of the true Guru in the form of holy congregation
ਗਿਆਨਧਿਆਨਸਿਮਰਣਿਸਦਾਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਬਦਿਸੁਰਤਿਲਿਵਲਾਈ।
ਉਥੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਅਰ ਸਦਾ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਗਾਈ।
And the gurmukhs there merge their consciousness in the Word through learning, meditation and, prayer.
ਭਾਇਭਗਤਿਭਉਪਿਰਮਰਸਸਤਿਗੁਰੁਮੂਰਤਿਰਿਦੇਵਸਾਈ।
ਪ੍ਰੇਮਾ ਭਗਤੀ, ਭਉ, ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਾਰ (ਗੁਰ ਮੂਰਤ ਦਾ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਖੇ ਕਰੋੜਾਂ ਬ੍ਰਹਿਮੰਡਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੈ
Fear of the Lord, loving devotion and the delight of love, for them, is the idol of the true Guru whom they cherish in their heart.
ਏਵਡੁਭਾਰੁਉਚਾਇਂਦੇਸਾਧਚਰਣਪੂਜਾਗੁਰਭਾਈ।
ਚਰਣ) ਚੁੱਕਦੇ ਹਨ (ਇਸ ਲਈ) ਸਾਧਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਹੀ ('ਗੁਰ ਭਾਈ'=) ਵਡੇ ਭਾਇ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ।
The feet of the true Guru in the form of sadhu bear so much load (mental as well as spiritual) of their disciples that,
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਕੀਮਨਪਾਈ।੧੪।
(ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁਖਫਲ ਦੀ ਕੀਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾਈ ਜਾਂਦੀ।
0 my brothers you, ought to worship them. The value of the pleasure fruit of the gunnukhs cannot be estimated.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੫
ਵਸੈਛਹਬਰਲਾਇਕੈਪਰਨਾਲੀਂਹੁਇਵੀਹੀਂਆਵੈ।
ਝੜੀ ਲਾਕੇ (ਮੀਂਹ) ਵਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰਨਾਲਿਆਂ ਥਾਣੀ ਹੋਕੇ ਗਲੀਆਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
When it rains cats and dogs, the water flowing through gargoyles comes down in the streets.
ਲਖਨਾਲੇਉਛਲਚਲਨਿਲਖਪਰਵਾਹੀਵਾਹਵਹਾਵੈ।
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲੇ ਉੱਛਲਕੇ ਚਲਦੇ ਹਨ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਵਾਹਾਂ ਦਾ 'ਵਾਹ' (ਹੜ੍ਹ) ਹੋ ਤੁਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Millions of streams overflowing become millions of currents.
ਲਖਨਾਲੇਲਖਵਾਹਿਵਹਿਨਦੀਆਅੰਦਰਿਰਲੇਰਲਾਵੈ।
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਲੇ ਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਹੜ੍ਹ ਵਗਕੇ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੇਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Millions of rivulets join the currents of rivers.
ਨਉਸੈਨਦੀਨੜਿੰਨਵੈਪੂਰਬਿਪਛਮਿਹੋਇਚਲਾਵੈ।
੯੯੯ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਪੂਰਬ ਤੇ ਪੱਛਮ ਵਿਖੇ ਚਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ (ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਲਓ ਤਾਂ ਕਈ ਪੂਰਬ ਪੱਛਮ, ਪਰ ਏਥੇ ਹਿੰਦ ਦਾ ਭਾਵ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ। ਸਿੰਧ ਤੇ ਸਹਾਯਕ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਨਾਲੇ ਪੱਛਮ ਵਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਤੇ ਗੰਗਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੁਤਰ ਆਦਿ ਸਹਾਯਕ ਨਦੀਆਂ ਨਾਲਿਆਂ ਸਣੇ ਪੂਰਬ ਜਾ ਡਿਗਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Nine hundred and ninety nine rivers flow in the east and the west directions.
ਨਦੀਆਜਾਇਸਮੁੰਦਵਿਚਿਸਾਗਰਸੰਗਮੁਹੋਇਮਿਲਾਵੈ।
(ਇੱਕੁਰ) ਨਦੀਆਂ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਗਮ ਹੋਕੇ ਮਿਲਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ।
Rivers go to meet the sea.
ਸਤਿਸਮੁੰਦਗੜਾੜਮਹਿਜਾਇਸਮਾਹਿਨਪੇਟੁਭਰਾਵੈ।
(ਉਜੇਹੇ) ਸੱਤ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਹੋਕੇ ਇਕ ਗੜਾੜ (ਮਹਾਂ ਸਾਗਰ) ਵਿਖੇ ਸਮਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪੇਟ ਅਜੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਭਰੀਦਾ (ਅੱਗੇ ਹੁਣ ਯਥਾਰਥ ਤੋਂ ਫੇਰ ਅਲੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਜਾਕੇ ਸਿੱਧਾਤ ਅਲੰਕਾਰ ਵਿਚ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Seven such seas merge into the oceans but still the oceans are not satiated.
ਜਾਇਗੜਾੜੁਪਤਾਲਹੇਠਿਹੋਇਤਵੇਦੀਬੂੰਦਸਮਾਵੈ।
ਗੜਾੜ ਪਤਾਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾਕੇ ਤੱਤੇ ਤਵੇ ਦੀ ਬੂੰਦ ਹੋਕੇ ਸਮਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੇ, (ਭਲਾ ਜੀ ! ਐਡੇ ਤਵੇ ਹੇਠ ਲਕੜੀਆਂ ਕਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਬਾਲੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ? ਉੱਤਰ)

ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹਾਂ (ਤੇ ਰਾਜਿਆਂ) ਦੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਸਿਰ ਲੱਕੜੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਥਾਉਂ ਜਾਲਕੇ ਉਸ ਤਵੇ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ (ਕਿਹੜੇ ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਬਾਲੀਦੇ ਹਨ?)
To heat this plate, millions of heads of the emperors are used as fuel.
ਮਰਦੇਖਹਿਖਹਿਦੁਨੀਆਦਾਵੈ।੧੫।
(੯) (ਜਿਹੜੇ) ਝੂਠੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਝੂਠੇ ਦਾਵੇ ਬੰਨ੍ਹਕੇ ਆਪੋ ਵਿਚ ਖਹਿ ਖਹਿ ਕੇ (ਅਨ੍ਯਾਇ ਨਾਲ ਜ਼ੁਲਮ ਕਰਕੇ) ਮਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
And these emperors staking their claims on this earth go on fighting and dying.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੬
ਇਕਤੁਥੇਕੈਦੁਇਖੜਗੁਦੁਇਪਤਿਸਾਹਨਮੁਲਕਿਸਮਾਣੈ।
ਇਕ ਮਿਆਨ ਵਿਚ ਤਲਵਾਰਾਂ ਦੋ (ਵਾਂਙੂੰ) ਦੋ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਇਕ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਖੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਮਾਉਂਦੇ।
In one sheath two swords and two emperors in one country cannot be accommodated;
ਵੀਹਫਕੀਰਮਸੀਤਿਵਿਚਿਖਿੰਥਖਿੰਧੋਲੀਹੇਠਿਲੁਕਾਣੈ।
ਇਕ ਮਸੀਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਖਫਨੀ ਜਾਂ ਗੋਦੜੀ ਹੇਠ ਲੁਕ ਕੇ ਵੀਹ ਫਕੀਰ ਗੁਜ਼ਾਰਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਹੁਣ ਦੁਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਤੀਜੀ ਤੁਕ ਵਿਖੇ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਂਤ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
But twenty faquirs in one mosque under one patched blanket can remain (comfortably).
ਜੰਗਲਅੰਦਰਿਸੀਹਦੁਇਪੋਸਤਡੋਡੇਖਸਖਸਦਾਣੈ।
(ਇਕ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਚ ਦੋ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ) ਜੰਗਲ ਵਿਚ ਦੋ ਸ਼ੇਰਾਂ (ਵਾਗੂ ਹਨ, ਅਰ ਵੀਹ ਫਕੀਰ) ਇਕ ਪੋਸਤ ਦੇ ਡੋਡੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਖਸਖਸ ਦੇ ਦਾਣਿਆਂ ਵਾਂਗੂ ਹਨ, (ਓਹ ਦਾਣੇ ਇਕੋ ਜਿਹੇ ਹਨ)।
Emperors are like two lions in a jungle whereas the faquirs are like the opium seeds in one pod.
ਸੂਲੀਉਪਰਿਖੇਲਣਾਸਿਰਿਧਰਿਛਤ੍ਰਬਜਾਰਵਿਕਾਣੈ।
ਸੂਲੀ ਉਪਰ ਖੇਲਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਵਿਚ ਗਲ ਗੁਲਕੇ ਡੰਡੀ ਰੂਪ ਸੂਲੀ ਪੁਰ ਚੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਨ ਜਦ) ਸਿਰ ਪੁਰ ਛੱਤ੍ਰ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਵਿਕਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਇਥੇ ਪੋਸਤ ਦੇ ਡੋਡੇ ਥੋਂ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਦਾ ਭਾਵ ਲੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ)।
These seeds play on the 'bed of thorns before they get the honour of selling in the market.
ਕੋਲੂਅੰਦਰਿਪੀੜੀਅਨਿਪੋਸਤਿਪੀਹਿਪਿਆਲੇਛਾਣੈ।
(ਫੇਰ ਦਾਣੇ) ਕੋਹਲੂ ਵਿਚ ਪੀੜੀਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤੇ ਤੇਲ ਵਰਤਣ ਵਿਖੇ ਕਈ ਕੰਮ ਕੱਢਦਾ ਹੈ) ਪੋਸਤ ਮਲ ਕੇ ਪਿਆਲਿਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਛਾਣਕੇ (ਲੋਕ ਪੀਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
They are rushed in the press with water before they are strained into the cup .
ਲਉਬਾਲੀਦਰਗਾਹਵਿਚਿਗਰਬੁਗੁਨਾਹੀਮਾਣੁਨਿਮਾਣੈ।
ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਖੁਦਾ ਦੀ ਕਚਹਿਰੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਗਰਬ ਵਾਲਾ ਮੁਜਰਮ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਰ ਨਿਮਾਣਾਂ (ਗਰੀਬ) ਮਾਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
In the court of the fearless Lord, the proud ones are called sinners and the humble get respects and regards.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਹੋਂਦੇਤਾਣਿਨਿਤਾਣੈ।੧੬।
(ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਬਲ ਦੇ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਨਿਤਾਣੇ ਹੋ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
That is why the gurmukhs though powerful behave as the meek ones.

ਸੀਹਪਜੂਤੀਬਕਰੀਮਰਦੀਹੋਈਹੜਹੜਹਸੀ।
ਸ਼ੇਰ ਦੀ ਪਕੜੀ ਹੋਈ ਬੱਕਰੀ ਮਰਣ ਵੇਲੇ ਟਾਹ ਟਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੱਸ ਪਈ।
A goat was caught by a lion and while about to die, it gave out a horse laugh.
ਸੀਹੁਪੁਛੈਵਿਸਮਾਦੁਹੋਇਇਤੁਅਉਸਰਿਕਿਤੁਰਹਸਿਰਹਸੀ।
ਸ਼ੇਰ ਹੈਰਾਨ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਪੁੱਛਣ ਲਗਾ ਇਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਕਿਸ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੱਸੀਂ ਹੈਂ?
The surprised lion asked why it was so happy at such a moment (of its death).
ਬਿਨਉਕਰੇਂਦੀਬਕਰੀਪੁਤ੍ਰਅਸਾਡੇਕੀਚਨਿਖਸੀ।
ਬੱਕਰੀ ਨੇ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਕਿ ਸਾਡੇ ਬੱਚੇ 'ਖੱਸੀ' (ਨਮਰਦ) ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਜਾਣ (ਜੋ ਸਾਡੀ ਵੰਸ਼ ਨਾ ਰਹੇ ਤੇ ਏਹ ਦੁਖ ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਪਾਯਾ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਪਾਉਣ)।
Humbly the goat replied that the testicals of our male progeny are crushed in order to castrate them.
ਅਕਧਤੂਰਾਖਾਧਿਆਂਕੁਹਿਕੁਹਿਖਲਉਖਲਿਵਿਣਸੀ।
ਅੱਕ ਤੇ ਧਤੂਰਾ ਖਾਂਦਿਆਂ (ਪਾਵ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਦੁੱਖ ਨਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਨਿਕੰਮੀ ਚੀਜ਼ ਜੋ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੇ ਅਰਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਪੇ ਉੱਗ ਖੜੋਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਖਾਕੇ ਸਾਡਾ ਇਹ ਹਾਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਕੁਹ ਕਹ ਕੇ (ਸਾਡੀ) ਖੱਲ ਉਧੇੜੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
We eat only wild plants of arid regions yet our skin is peeled and pounded.
ਮਾਸੁਖਾਨਿਗਲਵਢਿਕੈਹਾਲੁਤਿਨਾੜਾਕਉਣੁਹੋਵਸੀ।
(ਭਲਾ) ਜਿਹੜੇ (ਤੇਰੇ ਵਰਗੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦਾ) ਗਲਾ ਵੱਢਕੇ ਮਾਸ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਹਾਲ ਕੀ ਹੋਊ?
I think about the plight of those (like you) who cut the throat of others and eat their flesh.
ਗਰਬੁਗਰੀਬੀਦੇਹਖੇਹਖਾਜੁਅਖਾਜੁਅਕਾਜੁਕਰਸੀ।
ਗਰਬੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਦੀ ਦੇਹ ਖੇਹ ਹੋ ਜਾਊ, (ਪਰੰਤੂ ਜਿਹੜੇ) ਖੋਟਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ('ਅਖਾਜ'=) ਹਰਾਮ ਹੋਣਗੇ (ਅਰ ਸੋ ਸੁਕਾਜ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਦੇਹ) ਖਾਜ (ਹਲਾਲ) ਹੋਊ (ਇਹ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਬੱਕਰੀ ਗਰੀਬ ਰਹੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਾਸ ਖਾਧਾ ਗਿਆ, ਸ਼ੇਰ ਜ਼ਾਲਮ ਸੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਾਸ ਕੌੜਾ ਹੋਯਾ, ਧ੍ਵਨੀ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਗ੍ਰੀਬਾਂ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨ
The body of both of the proud and the humble will become dust ultimately, but, even then the body of the arrogant (lion) is inedible and that of the humble (goat) attaims the status of edible.
ਜਗਿਆਇਆਸਭਕੋਇਮਰਸੀ।੧੭।
(ਏਥੇ) ਜਗਤ ਤੇ ਆਯਾ ਮਰ ਸਭ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਏਗਾ (ਪਰ ਅੰਤ ਭਲੇ ਦਾ ਭਲਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ, ਬੁਰੇ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਬੁਰਾ ਹੀ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ)।
All who came to this world have to die ultimately.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੮
ਚਰਣਕਵਲਰਹਰਾਸਿਕਰਿਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਪਰਗਾਸੀ।
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ) ਗਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ (ਵਿਖੇ ਮਿਲਕੇ) ਗੁਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੁ ਰੀਤ ਪਰਗਾਸ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ,
By remaining in and around the lotus feet, the gurmukh receives the light of the holy congregation.
ਪੈਰੀਪੈਪਾਖਾਕਹੋਇਲੇਖਅਲੇਖਅਮਰਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ।
(ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕਿ) ਪੈਰੀਂ ਪੈ ਕੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਹੋ ਗਏ (ਉਹ) ਲੇਖੇ ਥੋਂ ਅਲੇਖ ਹੋਕੇ ਅਮਰ ਤੇ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ (ਹੋ ਗਏ)।
Worshipping the feet and becoming the dust of the feet one becomes detached , immortal and indestructible .
ਕਰਿਚਰਣੋਦਕੁਆਚਮਾਨਆਧਿਬਿਆਧਿਉਪਾਧਿਖਲਾਸੀ।
ਚਰਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਲ ਦਾ ਆਚਮਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਧਿ ਬ੍ਯਾਧਿ ਉਪਾਧਿ (ਤੰਨ ਪੀੜਾਂ) ਤੋਂ ਖਲਾਸੀ ਪਾਈ ਹੈ।
Drinking the ash of the feet of gurmukhs, freedom from all physical mental and spiritual ailments is attained.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿਆਪੁਗਵਾਇਆਮਾਇਆਅੰਦਰਿਕਰਨਿਉਦਾਸੀ।
ਆਪਾ ਭਾਵ ਗਵਾ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
Through the wisdom of the Guru they lose, their ego and do not get absorbed in maya.
ਸਬਦਸੁਰਤਿਲਿਵਲੀਣੁਹੋਇਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਸਚਖੰਡਿਨਿਵਾਸੀ।
ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਦੀ ਲਿਵ ਵਿਖੇ (ਲੀਨ) ਮਗਨ ਹੋਕੇ (ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ) ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਸਚਖੰਡ ਵਿਖੇ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Absorbing their consciousness in the word, they reside in the true abode (holy congregation) of the formless one.
ਅਬਿਗਤਿਗਤਿਅਗਾਧਿਬੋਧਿਅਕਥਕਥਾਅਚਰਜਗੁਰਦਾਸੀ।
(ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ) ਅਬਿਗਤਿ ਗਤੀ ਹੈ ਅਰ ਡੂੰਘੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ, ਕਥਨ ਤੋਂ ਅਕੱਥ ਅਚਰਜ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਹੈ। (ਓਹ ਅਚਰਜ ਕੀ ਹੈ?)
The tale of the servants of the Lord is unfathomable ineffable and Manifest.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਆਸਨਿਰਾਸੀ।੧੮।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਫਲ ਪਾਕੇ ਆਸਾ ਥੋਂ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਹੋ ਗਏ (ਇਸ ਲਈ ਓਹ ਅਚਰਜ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਾਸ ਹਨ)।
Remaining indifferent to hopes is the pleasure fruit of the Gurmukhs.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੯
ਸਣਵਣਵਾੜੀਖੇਤੁਇਕੁਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੁਵਿਕਾਰੁਜਣਾਵੈ।
ਸਣ ਅਤੇ ਕਪਾਹ ਦਾ ਖੇਤ ਇਕੋ ਹੈ (ਪਰੰਤੁ ਕਪਾਹ) ਪਰੋਪਕਾਰ (ਅਰ ਸਣ) ਵਿਕਾਰ (ਖੋਟੀ ਕਾਰ) ਜਣਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
Hemp and cotton grow in the same field but the use of one is benevolent while the other one is put to evil use.
ਖਲਕਢਾਹਿਵਟਾਇਸਣਰਸਾਬੰਧਨੁਹੋਇਬਨ੍ਹਾਵੈ।
ਖੱਲ ਕਢਾ ਕੇ ਸਣ ਵੱਟੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਰ ਰੱਸਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਹੋਕੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਨ੍ਹਾਉਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਅਗੇ ਤੀਜੀ ਤੁਕ ਵਿਖੇ ਕਪਾਹ ਦਾ ਪਰੋਪਕਾਰ ਦਸਦੇ ਹਨ)।
After peeling off the hemp plant rope is made whose nooses are used to tie people in bondage.
ਖਾਸਾਮਲਮਲਸਿਰੀਸਾਫੁਸੂਤੁਕਤਾਇਕਪਾਹਵੁਣਾਵੈ।
ਖਾਸਾ, ਮਲਮਲ ਤੇ ਸਿਰੀ ਸਾਫ ਕਪਾਹ ਦੇ ਸੂਤ ਥੋਂ ਉਣਕੇ ਬਣਾਏ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
On the other hand, from cotton are made coarse cloth muslin and sirisaf.
ਲਜਣੁਕਜਣੁਹੋਇਕੈਸਾਧੁਅਸਾਧੁਬਿਰਦੁਬਿਰਦਾਵੈ।
(ਉਹ ਕਪੜੇ) ਲੱਜਾ ਦੇ ਢੱਕਣ ਹੋਕੇ ਸਾਧਾਂ ਤੇ ਅਸਾਧਾਂ ਦੇ ਧਰਮ ਦੀ ਰੱਛਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਨੰਗੇਜ ਨੂੰ ਢਕਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Cotton in the form of cloth covers the modesty of others and protects the dharma of sadhus as well as wicked persons.
ਸੰਗਦੋਖਨਿਰਦੋਖਮੋਖਸੰਗਸੁਭਾਉਨਸਾਧੁਮਿਟਾਵੈ।
ਨਿਰਦੋਖਾਂ ਦੀ (ਭਾਵ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਦੀ) ਜੇਕਰ ਸੰਗਤ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਦੋਖੀ ਬੀ ਮੋਖ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਸਾਧੂ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਦਾ ਸਭਾਉ ਗੁਆਉਂਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ (ਹੁਣ ਜੇਕਰ ਸਾਧੂ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਆ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ)
The sadhus even when they associate with the evil never repudiate their saintly nature.
ਤ੍ਰਪੜੁਹੋਵੈਧਰਮਸਾਲਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਪਗਧੂੜਿਧੁਮਾਵੈ।
(ਉਹੋ ਦੋਖੀ ਸਣ) ਤੱਪੜ (ਉਣੀਜਕੇ) ਧਰਮਸਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਛਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਰ ਸਾਧਾਂ ਦੀ ਚਰਣ ਧੂੜ ਪੈ ਕੇ (ਕ੍ਰਿਤਾਰਥ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ)।
When the hemp transformed into coarse cloth is brought to the holy places for spreading in the holy congregation, it also becomes blest after coming in touch with the dust of the feet of the sadhus.
ਕਟਿਕੁਟਿਸਣਕਿਰਤਾਸੁਕਰਿਹਰਿਜਸੁਲਿਖਿਪੁਰਾਣਸੁਣਾਵੈ।
ਕੁਟ ਕੁਟ ਕੇ ਸਣ ਦੇ ਕਾਗਤ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਹਰੀ ਦਾ ਜੱਸ (ਗ੍ਯਾਨੀ) ਲਿਖਕੇ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ) ਸੁਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਭਾਵ ਭਲੀ ਸੰਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਬੁਰੇ ਬੀ ਸੁਧਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Also, when after getting a thorough beating paper is made of it, the holy men write praises of the Lord.on it and recite the same for others.
ਪਤਿਤਪੁਨੀਤਕਰੈਜਨਭਾਵੈ।੧੯।
(ਜੇ ਹਰੀ) ਜਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਪਾਪੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੀ ਪਵਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The holy congregation makes the fallen ones also holy.
ਪਉੜੀ੨੦
ਪਥਰਚਿਤੁਕਠੋਰੁਹੈਚੂਨਾਹੋਵੈਅਗੀਂਦਧਾ।
ਪੱਥਰ ਦਾ (ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਚਿੱਤ ਕਰੜਾ ਹੈ, ਅੱਗ ਦਾ ਸਾੜਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਚੂਨਾ (ਕਲੀ) ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
When the hard hearted stone is burnt, it turns into lime stone. sprinkling of water extinguishes fire
ਅਗਬੁਝੈਜਲੁਛਿੜਕਿਐਚੂਨਾਅਗਿਉਠੇਅਤਿਵਧਾ।
ਪਾਣੀ ਛਿਣਕਿਆਂ (ਓਪਰੀ) ਅੱਗ ਬੁਝ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਪਰੰਤੂ) ਚੂਨੇ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਅੱਗ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਉੱਠਦੀ ਹੈ।
But in the case of lime water produces great heat.
ਪਾਣੀਪਾਏਵਿਹੁਨਜਾਇਅਗਨਿਨਛੁਟੈਅਵਗੁਣਬਧਾ।
ਪਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਹਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਵਿਚਲੀ ਵਿਹੁ ਰੂਪੀ ਅੱਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੁਟਦੀ, (ਅਜਿਹਾ) ਅਵਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਬੱਧਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।
Its poison does not go away even if water is thrown on it and its foul fire remains in it .
ਜੀਭੈਉਤੈਰਖਿਆਛਾਲੇਪਵਨਿਸੰਗਿਦੁਖਲਧਾ।
ਜੇਕਰ ਜੀਭ ਪੁਰ ਚੂਨਾ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਛਾਲੇ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਇਸ) ਸੰਗਤ ਦਾ ਦੁਖ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਾਣਿਆਂ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਸਭ ਸਮਝਦੇ ਹਨ)।
