ਸੋਰਠਿਬੀਜਾਗਾਵੀਐਜਸੁਸੁਘੜਾਵਾਤੀ।

(ਪਰ) ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ (ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ) ਓਹ (ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਨੂੰ) ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਵੇਲੇ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
But superior to all is the love the disciples bear their Guru.They sing it at the ambrosial hour of morning.
ਪਉੜੀ੨
ਅਮਲੀਅਮਲੁਨਛਡਨੀਹੁਇਬਹਨਿਇਕਠੇ।
(ਜਿੱਕੁਰ) ਅਮਲੀ ਲੋਕ (ਆਪੋ ਆਪਣੇ) ਅਮਲ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦੇ, ਕੱਠੇ ਹੋਕੇ ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ (ਅਮਲ ਛਕਣ ਲਈ)।
Opium-eaters eschew not opium and sit down together to eat it.
ਜਿਉਜੂਏਜੂਆਰੀਆਲਗਿਦਾਵਉਪਠੇ।
ਜੂਏ ਵਿਖੇ ਜੁਆਰੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੈ, ਉਲਟੇ ਦਾਉ ਬੀ ਲਾ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਭਾਵ ਯੁਧਿਸ਼ਟਰ ਵਾਙੂੰ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਤ੍ਰੀਮਤਾਂ ਹਾਰਣ ਤੀਕ ਬੀ ਢਿੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ)
Gamblers indulge in play and lose their stakes.
ਚੋਰੀਚੋਰਨਪਲਰਹਿਦੁਖਸਹਨਿਗਰਠੇ।
ਚੋਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਚੋਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਛਡਦੇ, ਭਾਵੇਂ (ਕੁਟਵਾਲਾਂ) ਦੇ ਗ੍ਰਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੁਖ ਬੀ ਸਹਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Thieves do not abandon thieving and suffer punishment when caught.
ਰਹਨਿਨਗਣਿਕਾਵਾੜਿਅਹੁਵੇਕਰਮੀਲਠੇ।
ਵੇਕਰਮੀ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਮੰਦ ਕਰਮੀ) ਲੋਕ ਵੇਸਵਾ ਦੇ ('ਵਾੜੇ') ਘਰੋਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੇ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ 'ਲੱਠੇ') ਮਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਲੱਟੂ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਯਾ 'ਲੱਠਾਂ' ਸੋਟਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਬੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੁਕਦੇ)।
The evil-doers do not remain away from the house of the ill-repute women though they sell off even their clothes to provide for them.
ਪਾਪੀਪਾਪੁਕਮਾਵਦੇਹੋਇਫਿਰਦੇਨਠੇ।
(ਗੱਲ ਕੀ ਉਕਤ ਅਮਲੀਆਂ ਆਦਿਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਕਈ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਪਾਪ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਪਰੰਤੂ)
Sinners commit sin anu abscond to avoid punishment.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਪਿਰਹੜੀਸਭਪਾਪਪਣਠੇ।੨।
ਮੁਰੀਦ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਪਾਪ ਨੱਸ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
But, contrary to all these, the Sikhs of the Guru, (whose companionship is far from being injurious) love their Guru, and he absolves them of all their sins.
ਪਉੜੀ੩
ਭਵਰੈਵਾਸੁਵਿਣਾਸੁਹੈਫਿਰਦਾਫੁਲਵਾੜੀ।
ਭਵਰ ਦਾ (ਭਾਵੇਂ) ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਵਿਣਾਸ ਹੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ, (ਫੇਰ ਬੀ) ਫੁਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਾੜੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਅਜਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਬੀ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਕੰਡਿਆਂ ਵੱਲ ਨਾ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਤਿਆਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ)।
The black bee gets perished while enjoying the fragrance in the garden.
ਜਲੈਪਤੰਗੁਨਿਸੰਗੁਹੋਇਕਰਿਅਖਿਉਘਾੜੀ।
ਪਤੰਗ ਨਿਸੰਗ ਹੋਕੇ (ਦੀਵੇ ਪੁਰ ਜਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਫੇਰ ਬੀ) ਅੱਖਾਂ ਉਘਾੜਕੇ (ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦਾ) ਹੈ (ਡਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ)।
Moth fearlessly burns itself on the flame but goes on beholding in the face of the flame up to last.
ਮਿਰਗਨਾਦਿਬਿਸਮਾਦੁਹੋਇਫਿਰਦਾਉਜਾੜੀ।
ਮਿਰਗ ਨਾਦ ਪਰ ਮੋਹਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਉਜਾੜਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਫਿਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Overwhelmed by melody, the deer goes on wandering in the forests.
ਕੁੰਡੀਫਾਥੇਮਛਜਿਉਰਸਿਜੀਭਵਿਗਾੜੀ।
ਕੁੰਡੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਮੱਛ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਰਸ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਜੀਭ ਵਿਗਾੜ ਰਖੀ ਹੈ।
Overpowered by the taste of tongue, the fish itself catches the hook.
ਹਾਥਣਿਹਾਥੀਫਾਹਿਆਦੁਖਸਹੈਦਿਹਾੜੀ।
ਹਾਥਣੀ (ਦਾ ਕਲਬੂਤ ਦੇਖਕੇ) ਹਾਥੀ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। (ਕਈ) ਦਿਹਾੜੀਆਂ ਦੁਖ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Out of lust for its female, the male elephant gets caught and bears sufferings for the rest of life.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਪਿਰਹੜੀਲਾਇਨਿਜਘਰਿਤਾੜੀ।੩।
ਪੀਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੱਚੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਨਿਜ (ਘਰ) ਸਰੂਪ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾ ਛਡਦੇ ਹਨ।
Likewise, the Sikhs of the Guru love their Guru and stablize themselves in their true selves.
ਪਉੜੀ੪
ਚੰਦਚਕੋਰਪਰੀਤਹੈਲਾਇਤਾਰਨਿਹਾਲੇ।
ਚਕੋਰ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ, ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਕੇ (ਚੰਦ ਵਲ) ਤੱਕਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Red-legged partridge (chakor) loves moon and hence stares at it without even losing its glance.
ਚਕਵੀਸੂਰਜਹੇਤਹੈਮਿਲਿਹੋਨਿਸੁਖਾਲੇ।
ਚਕਵੀ ਦਾ ਸੂਰਜ ਨਾਲ ਹੇਤ ਹੈ। (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਜਦ ਉਹ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਦੋਂ ਚਕਵੀ ਚਕਵਾ ਆਪੋ ਵਿਖੇ) ਮਿਲਕੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Ruddy sheldrake (chakavi) loves sun, and in sunlight, meeting its beloved feels elated.
ਨੇਹੁਕਵਲਜਲਜਾਣੀਐਖਿੜਿਮੁਹਵੇਖਾਲੇ।
ਕਵਲ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਜਲ ਨਾਲ ਜਾਣੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਖਿੜਕੇ (ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਹੋਕੇ) ਮੂੰਹ ਵਿਖਾਲਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਪਾਣੀ ਬਾਝ ਕੁਮਲਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।)
Lotus loves water and shows the water its blossomed face.
ਮੋਰਬਬੀਹੇਬੋਲਦੇਵੇਖਿਬਦਲਕਾਲੇ।
ਮੋਰ ਅਤੇ ਬੰਬੀਹੇ ਕਾਲੇ ਬੱਦਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਕੇ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਭਾਵ ਪਯਾਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਕੇ ਗੁਟਕਦੇ ਹਨ)
Rain birds and peacocks also shriek when they see the clouds.
ਨਾਰਿਭਤਾਰਪਿਆਰੁਹੈਮਾਂਪੁਤਸਮ੍ਹਾਲੇ।
ਭਰਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਹੈ ਅਰ ਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Wife loves her husband and mother takes care of the son.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਪਿਰਹੜੀਓਹੁਨਿਬਹੈਨਾਲੇ।੪।
ਪੀਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ (ਜੋ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੈ ਸੋ ਓੜਕ ਤੀਕ ਨਿਭਦੀ ਹੈ।
Similarly the Sikh loves Guru and this love accompanies him to the end.
ਪਉੜੀ੫
ਰੂਪੈਕਾਮੈਦੋਸਤੀਜਗਅੰਦਰਿਜਾਣੀ।
ਕਾਮੀ ਦੀ ਰੂਪ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੈ। (ਇਹ ਗੱਲ ਜਗਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾਣੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ।
Friendship of beauty and lust is known all over the world.
ਭੁਖੈਸਾਦੈਗੰਢੁਹੈਓਹੁਵਿਰਤੀਹਾਣੀ।
ਪੁਰਖ ਦੀ ('ਸਾਦ') ਰੋਟੀ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੈ, ਇਹ (ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਪਰਤੱਖ(ਵਰਤ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ।
And this is very practical that hunger and taste are complementry.
ਘੁਲਿਮਿਲਿਮਿਚਲਿਲਬਿਮਾਲਿਇਤੁਭਰਮਿਭੁਲਾਣੀ।
ਲਾਲਚੀ ਦੀ ਮਾਲ ਨਾਲ (ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅਜਿਹੀ ਕਿ 'ਘੁਲ ਮਿਲ' ਕਹੀਏ) ਰਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ('ਮਿਚਲ') ਅਭੇਦ ਹੋਕੇ ਇਸ ਭਰਮ ਵਿਖੇ ਭੁਲ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। (ਕਿ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਲ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Greed and wealth also mix up with each other and remain deluded.
ਊਘੈਸਉੜਿਪਲੰਘਜਿਉਸਭਿਰੈਣਿਵਿਹਾਣੀ।
ਨਿੰਦ੍ਰਾਲੂ ਨੂੰ ਜਿੱਕੁਰਾਂ 'ਸਉੜ' ਤੇ ਪਲੰਘ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੈ (ਤੇ ਇਵੇਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ) ਸਾਰੀ ਰਾਤ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
For a dozing person, even a small cot is a pleasure to pass the night.
ਸੁਹਣੇਸਭਰੰਗਮਾਣੀਅਨਿਕਰਿਚੋਜਵਿਡਾਣੀ।
ਸੁਪਨੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਾਰੇ (ਓਹ) ਰੰਗ ਮਾਣੀਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਕਈ ਪਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ) ਅਚਰਜ ਕੌਤਕ (ਜੋ) (ਲੱਗ) ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਕਰੀਦੇ ਹਨ)
In the dream, one enjoys every colour of events.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਓਹੁਅਕਥਕਹਾਣੀ।੫।
ਪੀਰ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ (ਜਿਹੜੀ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਓਹ ਅਕਥ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਹੈ।
Likewise, indescribable is the story of the love of the Sikh and the Guru

ਮਾਨਸਰੋਵਰਹੰਸਲਾਖਾਇਮਾਣਕਮੋਤੀ।
ਹੰਸ ਮਾਨਸਰੋਵਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਹਿਕੇ ਮਾਣਕ ਅਰ ਮੋਤੀ ਚੁਗਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਤਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਲੋਕ ਪੀਰਾਂ ਪਾਸ ਨਿਵਾਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਦੈਵੀਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਹਾਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The swan of Mansarovar picks up only pearls and jewels.
ਕੋਇਲਅੰਬਪਰੀਤਿਹੈਮਿਲਬੋਲਸਰੋਤੀ।
ਕੋਇਲ ਦੀ ਅੰਬ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ, ਮਿੱਠੇ ਮਿੱਠੇ ਬੋਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੁਰ ਕਢਦੀ ਹੈ।
The nightingale and mango tree bear love for each other, and hence it sings thereupon.
ਚੰਦਨਵਾਸੁਵਣਾਸੁਪਤਿਹੋਇਪਾਸਖਲੋਤੀ।
ਚੰਦਨ ਦੇ ਪਾਸ ਖਲੋਤੀ ਹੋਈ ਵਨਾਸਪਤੀ (ਚੰਦਨ ਦੀ ਹੀ) ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
The sandal loves whole vegetation, and whosoever is near it, becomes fragrant.
ਲੋਹਾਪਾਰਸਿਭੇਟਿਐਹੋਇਕੰਚਨਜੋਤੀ।
ਲੋਹਾ ਪਾਰਸ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਸੋਨੇ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
Touching the philosopher's stone the iron brightens like gold.
ਨਦੀਆਨਾਲੇਗੰਗਮਿਲਿਹੋਨਿਛੋਤਅਛੋਤੀ।
ਨਦੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਲੇ ਗੰਗਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਕੇ ਛੋਤ ਥੋਂ ਅਛੋਤ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Even the defiled streams, meeting the Ganges, become sacred.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਇਹਖੇਪਸਓਤੀ।੬।
ਪੀਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਦੀ ਖੇਪ ('ਸਓਤੀ') ਸਫਲੀ ਹੈ।
Such is also the love between the Sikh and the Guru, and to a Sikh, this is most priceless commodity.
ਪਉੜੀ੭
ਸਾਹੁਰੁਪੀਹਰੁਪਖਤ੍ਰੈਘਰੁਨਾਨੇਹਾਲਾ।
ਸਾਹੁਰਾ, ਪੇਕਾ ਅਤੇ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਘਰ ਤਿੰਨ ਪਾਸੇ (ਸਾਕਾ ਦਾਰੀ ਦੇ) ਹਨ (ਸਾਹੁਰੇ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਸਾਕ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਹਨ?)
There are three types of relationship - first those of father, mother, sister, brother and their offspring and alliances;
ਸਹੁਰਾਸਸੁਵਖਾਣੀਐਸਾਲੀਤੈਸਾਲਾ।
ਸਹੁਰਾ, ਸੱਸ, ਸਾਲੀ, ਅਤੇ ਸਾਲਾ ਕਹੀਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪੇਕੇ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਸਾਕ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਹਨ?)
Second, mother's father, mother's mother, mother's sisters, mother's brothers;
ਮਾਪਿਉਭੈਣਾਭਾਇਰਾਪਰਵਾਰੁਦੁਰਾਲਾ।
ਮਾਂ, ਪਿਉ, ਭੈਣਾਂ, ਭਿਰਾਉ (ਆਦਿ) ਬਾਹਲਾ ਪਰਵਾਰ। (ਨਾਨਕੇ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਸਾਕ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ।)
Third, father-in-law, mother-in-law, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law.
ਨਾਨਾਨਾਨੀਮਾਸੀਆਮਾਮੇਜੰਜਾਲਾ।
ਨਾਨਾ, ਨਾਨੀ ਮਾਸੀਆਂ, ਮਾਮੇ (ਪਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਾਕ) ਜਾਲ ਰੂਪ ਹਨ।
For them, gold, silver, diamonds, and corals are amassed.
ਸੁਇਨਾਰੁਪਾਸੰਜੀਐਹੀਰਾਪਰਵਾਲਾ।
ਸੋਨਾ, ਰੁੱਪਾ, ਹੀਰੇ ਅਰ ਗੁਲੀਆਂ ਕੱਠੇ ਕਰੀਦੇ ਹਨ (ਤਦ ਸਾਕਾ-ਦਾਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਭਦੀ ਹੈ) ਸੱਚਾ ਸਾਕ ਅਰ ਸੱਚਾ ਧਨ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਹੈ?
But dearer than all is the love of the Guru's Sikhs for the Guru,
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਏਹੁਸਾਕੁਸੁਖਾਲਾ।੭।
ਪੀਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ, ਇਹ ਸਾਕ ਸੁੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਘਰ ਹੈ।
And, this is the relationship which brings happiness.
ਪਉੜੀ੮
ਵਣਜੁਕਰੈਵਾਪਾਰੀਆਤਿਤੁਲਾਹਾਤੋਟਾ।
ਵਿਹਾਰੀ ਲੋਕ ਵਣਜ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ (ਕਦੀ) ਲਾਭ (ਕਦੀ) ਘਾਟਾ ਪੈ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The trader trades and he earns profits as well as loss.
ਕਿਰਸਾਣੀਕਿਰਸਾਣੁਕਰਿਹੋਇਦੁਬਲਾਮੋਟਾ।
ਜ਼ਿਮੀਂਦਾਰ ਲੋਕ ਖੇਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਵਿਖੇ (ਮੇਹਨਤ ਨਾਲ) ਲਿੱਸੇ (ਤੇ ਫਸਲ ਸਿਰੇ ਚਾੜਨ ਦੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਵਿਚ) ਮੋਟੇ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The farmer cultivates and thus increases or decreases.
ਚਾਕਰੁਲਗੈਚਾਕਰੀਰਣਿਖਾਂਦਾਚੋਟਾਂ।
ਨੌਕਰ ਲੋਕ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਅਰ) ਜੁੱਧ ਵਿਖੇ (ਸ਼ਾਸ਼ਤ੍ਰ ਦੀਆਂ) ਚੋਟਾਂ ਸਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
The servant serves and gets blows in the battlefield.
ਰਾਜੁਜੋਗੁਸੰਸਾਰੁਵਿਚਿਵਣਖੰਡਗੜਕੋਟਾ।
ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਾਜਗੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਕੋਟਾਂ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਕਿਲਿਆਂ ਵਿਖੇ) ਅਰ 'ਜੋਗ' (ਪ੍ਰਣਾਯਾਮ), ਖੰਡਾਂ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਬਾਨਪ੍ਰਸਥ ਵਿਖੇ) ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਫਲ ਕੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ?)
The results of ruling, living as a yogi, residing in the world, forest
ਅੰਤਿਕਾਲਿਜਮਜਾਲੁਪੈਪਾਏਫਲਫੋਟਾ।
ਅੰਤ ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਜਮ ਦੀ ਫ਼ਾਂਸੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਪੈਕੇ ('ਫੋਟਾ') ਫੁੱਟਣ ਵਾਲਾ (ਜਾਂ ਮਾੜਾ) ਫਲ ਭੋਗ ਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵ ਚੋਰਾਸੀ ਦੀ ਫਾਂਸੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦੀ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ)।
And forts are such that ultimately man is caught in the web of yama i.e. he goes on transmigrating.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਹੁਇਕਦੇਨਤੋਟਾ।੮।
ਪੀਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਕਦੀ ਘਾਟਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ।
But such is love between the Sikh and his Guru that loss is never suffered.
ਪਉੜੀ੯
ਅਖੀਵੇਖਿਨਰਜੀਆਬਹੁਰੰਗਤਮਾਸੇ।
ਅੱਖਾਂ ਨਾਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਦੇਖਦੀਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਰੱਜੀਆਂ ਨਹੀਂ।
The eyes are not satisfied with beholding sights and exhibitions;
ਉਸਤਤਿਨਿੰਦਾਕੰਨਿਸੁਣਿਰੋਵਣਿਤੈਹਾਸੇ।
ਉਸਤਤੀ ਅਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕੰਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਣਕੇ ਰੋਂਦੇ ਤੇ ਹੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ (ਸਿੱਟਾ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ)।
The ears are not satisfied with hearing praise or blame, mourning or rejoicing;
ਸਾਦੀਂਜੀਭਨਰਜੀਆਕਰਿਭੋਗਬਿਲਾਸੇ।
ਜੀਭ ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਦੇ ਰਜਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ (ਸੁਆਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੱਖਕੇ) ਅਨੰਦ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।
The tongue is not satisfied with eating what affords pleasure and delight;
ਨਕਨਰਜਾਵਾਸੁਲੈਦੁਰਗੰਧਸੁਵਾਸੇ।
ਨੱਕ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੈਕੇ ਰੱਜਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, (ਕਿਧਰੇ) ਦੁਰਗੰਧ (ਕਿਧਰੇ) ਸੁਗੰਧ (ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਹੁੰਦੀ) ਹੈ।
The nose is not contented with good or evil odour;
ਰਜਿਨਕੋਈਜੀਵਿਆਕੂੜੇਭਰਵਾਸੇ।
ਰੱਜਕੇ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਮਰ ਭੋਗਦਾ, ਝੂਠੇ ਭਰੋਸਿਆਂ (ਵਿਖੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਫਸੇ ਹੋਏ ਮਸਤ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Nobody is satisfied with his span of life, and everyone entertains false hopes.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਸਚੀਰਹਰਾਸੇ।੯।
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ) ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੀਰਾਂ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ) ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਹੁ ਰੀਤ ਸੱਚੀ ਹੈ।
But the Sikhs are satisfied with the Guru and theirs is the true love and delight.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੦
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁਸਿਰੁਜੋਗੁਰਨਨਿਵੈਗੁਰਲਗੈਨਚਰਣੀ।
ਧ੍ਰਿਕਾਰ ਹੈ (ਉਸ) ਸਿਰ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਅਗੇ ਨੀਉਂਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਰ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਚਰਣੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਗਦਾ।
Cursed is the head that bows not before the Guru and touches not his feet.
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁਲੋਇਣਿਗੁਰਦਰਸਵਿਣੁਵੇਖੈਪਰਤਰਣੀ।
ਜੇਹੜੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਪਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ ਵੱਲ ਬੁਰੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਕਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਹਨ।
Cursed are the eyes who instead of beholding the Guru behold another's wife.
ਧ੍ਰਿਗਸਰਵਣਿਉਪਦੇਸਵਿਣੁਸੁਣਿਸੁਰਤਿਨਧਰਣੀ।
ਉਹ ਕੰਨ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਨਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਗੁਰਾਂ ਵੱਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਧਾਰਦੇ, ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਹਨ।
Those ears are (also) cursed which do not listen to the sermon of the Guru and do not concentrate upon it'
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁਜਿਹਬਾਗੁਰਸਬਦਵਿਣੁਹੋਰਮੰਤ੍ਰਸਿਮਰਣੀ।
(ਉਸ) ਜੀਭ ਨੂੰ ਧ੍ਰਿੱਗ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਦੀ) ਬਾਣੀ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡਕੇ ਹੋਰ ਮੰਤਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰਦੀ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
Cursed is that tongue which recites • mantras other than the word of the Guru
ਵਿਣੁਸੇਵਾਧ੍ਰਿਗੁਹਥਪੈਰਹੋਰਨਿਹਫਲਕਰਣੀ।
ਧਿ੍ਰ$੨ੱਗ ਹੈ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪੈਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਸੇਵਾ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਝੂਠੀਆਂ ਅਫਲ (ਸੇਵਾ) ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Without service, cursed are the heads, and feet, and useless are other deeds.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਸੁਖਸਤਿਗੁਰਸਰਣੀ।੧੦।
ਪੀਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੀ (ਸਫਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਹੈ, ਕਾਰਨ ਕੀ ਹੈ?) ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ (ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਦੀ) ਸ਼ਰਣ ਵਿਖੇ (ਆਤਮ) ਸੁਖ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।
The (true) love is there between the Sikh and the Guru and the real delight is there in the shelter of the Guru.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੧
ਹੋਰਤੁਰੰਗਿਨਰਚੀਐਸਭੁਕੂੜੁਦਿਸੰਦਾ।
ਹੋਰ ਰੰਗਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਨ ਕਰੀਏ ਸਾਰੇ (ਰੰਗ) ਕੂੜੇ ਦਿਸਦੇ ਹਨ।
Love none but the Guru; all other love is false.
ਹੋਰਤੁਸਾਦਿਨਲਗੀਐਹੋਇਵਿਸੁਲਗੰਦਾ।
ਹੋਰ ਸਵਾਦਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਨ ਮਨ ਦੇਈਏ, (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਓਹ ਸਵਾਦ) ਵਿਹੁ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੰਦਲਾਂ ਹਨ (ਜਿਹਾ ਕੁ “ਫਰੀਦਾ ਏ ਵਿਸੁ ਗੰਦਲਾਂ ਧਰੀਆਂ ਖੰਡੁ ਲਿਵਾੜਿ॥”)
Enjoy no other relish than his, for it would be poisonous.
ਹੋਰਤੁਰਾਗਨਰੀਝੀਐਸੁਣਿਸੁਖਨਲਹੰਦਾ।
ਹੋਰ ਰਾਗਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਨਾ ਮਸਤ ਹੋਈਏ, (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ) ਸੁਣਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈ ਸਕਦੇ (ਸਰਾਪਾਂ ਪਾਪਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Be not pleased with any one else's singing, for listening to it would bring no happiness.
ਹੋਰੁਬੁਰੀਕਰਤੂਤਿਹੈਲਗੈਫਲੁਮੰਦਾ।
ਹੋਰ ਕਰਤੂਤਾਂ ਬੁਰੀਆਂ ਹਨ, (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ) ਫਲ ਅੰਤ ਨੁੰ ਮੰਦਾ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਊ (“ਜੇਹਾ ਬੀਜੇ ਸੋ ਲੁਣੈ ਕਰਮਾ ਸੰਦੜਾ ਖੇਤੁ”)।
All acts not in conformity with the Guru's teaching, are evil, and bear evil fruit.
ਹੋਰਤੁਪੰਥਿਨਚਲੀਐਠਗੁਚੋਰੁਮੁਹੰਦਾ।
ਹੋਰ (ਜੋਗੀ, ਜੰਗਮ, ਸਰੇਵੜਿਆਂ ਦੇ) ਪੰਥ ਵਿਖੇ ਨਾ ਤੁਰੀਏ, (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਾਦਿਕ ਠੱਗ ਅਤੇ ਚੋਰ (ਦੈਵੀ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦਾ) ਧਨ ਲੁੱਟ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ (ਲਾਭਦਾਈ ਪੰਥ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਹੈ?)
Walk only in the way of true Guru, because in all other ways, there are thieves who cheat and rob.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਸਚੁਸਚਿਮਿਲੰਦਾ।੧੧।
ਪੀਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਿਸ਼ਚੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕਰਣੀ, (ਇਉਂ ਮੁਰੀਦ) ਸੱਚੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The love of the Guru's Sikhs for the Guru causes their soul to blend their truth with the Truth.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੨
ਦੂਜੀਆਸਵਿਣਾਸੁਹੈਪੂਰੀਕਿਉਹੋਵੈ।
ਦੂਜੀ ਆਸਾ ਵਿਖੇ (ਦੇਹ ਦਾ) ਵਿਣਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪੂਰੀ ਕਿੱਕੁਰ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ?
Other hopes (except Lord's) are ruination; how could they be accomplished.
ਦੂਜਾਮੋਹਸੁਧ੍ਰੋਹਸਭੁਓਹੁਅੰਤਿਵਿਗੋਵੈ।
ਦੂਜਾ ਮੋਹ ਸਭ ਛਲ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ ਓਹ ਅੰਤ ਦੁਖ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
Other infatuations are delusion which ultimately lead (man) astray.
ਦੂਜਾਕਰਮੁਸੁਭਰਮਹੈਕਰਿਅਵਗੁਣਰੋਵੈ।
ਦੂਜਾ ਕਰਮ ਭਰਮ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ, ਕਰਣਹਾਰੇ ਅਵਗੁਣਾਂ (ਮਾਰੇ) ਰੋਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
Other actions are deceits by which man cultivates demerits and suffers.
ਦੂਜਾਸੰਗੁਕੁਢੰਗੁਹੈਕਿਉਭਰਿਆਧੋਵੈ।
ਦੂਜੀ ਸੰਗਤ (ਭਾਵ ਮਨਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੁਸੰਗਤ) ਖੋਟਾ ਢੰਗ ਹੈ, ਪਾਪਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਿੱਕੁਰ ਧੋ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ?
The company of the sense of otherness is a perfidious way of living; and how it could wash away the sinful life.
ਦੂਜਾਭਾਉਕੁਦਾਉਹੈਹਾਰਿਜਨਮੁਖਲੋਵੈ।
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਖੋਟਾ ਦਾਉ ਹੈ, ਜਨਮ ਨੂੰ (ਦੂਜੇ ਭਾਉ ਵਾਲਾ) ਹਾਰ ਖਲੋਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
The othemness is a wrong stake which ultimatley makes one lose the (battle of) life.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਗੁਣਗੁਣੀਪਰੋਵੈ।੧੨।
ਪੀਰ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਐਸੀ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੋਕੇ ਗੁਣੀ ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ।
The love between the Sikhs and the Guru, brings the meritorious people closer and makes them one (sangat).
ਪਉੜੀ੧੩
ਅਮਿਓਦਿਸਟਿਕਰਿਕਛੁਵਾਂਗਿਭਵਜਲਵਿਚਿਰਖੈ।
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਕੱਛੂ ਵਾਂਗ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਸਮੁੰਦਰ ਵਿਖੇ (ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਸਿਖ ਦੀ) ਰੱਛਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
As the contraction of limbs saves the tortoise, the ambrosial vision of the Guru saves the Sikh from the world ocean.
ਗਿਆਨਅੰਸਦੇਹੰਸਵਾਂਗਿਬੁਝਿਭਖਅਭਖੈ।
ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ('ਅੰਸ') ਕਿਰਣ ਜਾਂ ਬੁਧਿ ਦੇ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੰਸ ਵਾਂਗੂ ਭੱਖ ਅਤੇ ਅਭੱਖ ਦੇ ਭੱਛਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਬੂਝ (ਸਮਝ) (ਭਾਵ ਤੱਤ ਮਿੱਥਯਾ ਦਾ ਵਿਵੇਚਨ) ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹਨ (ਅਜਿਹਾ ਸਿਖ, ਪਾਣੀ ਤੇ ਦੁਧ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਖੋ ਵੱਖ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Like a swan having discriminatory knowledge (of sifting water from milk), this vision of Guru provides wisdom about the edible and the inedible.
ਸਿਮਰਣਕਰਦੇਕੂੰਜਵਾਂਗਿਉਡਿਲਖੈਅਲਖੈ।
ਕੂੰਜ ਵਾਂਗ (ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਸਿਖ ਦੀ) ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਤੀ ਰਖਦੇ ਹਨ (ਭਾਵੇਂ ਕੂੰਜ) ਲੱਖਾਂ ਕੋਹ ਉੱਡਕੇ ਆਪ ਅਲਖ ਭੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ (ਪਰੰਤੂ ਬੱਚਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਰਖਦੀ ਹੈ)।
Like a Siberian crane which keeps in mind its off-springs, the Guru also always takes care of the disciples, and (through his spiritual powers) foresees the invisible.
ਮਾਤਾਬਾਲਕਹੇਤੁਕਰਿਓਹੁਸਾਉਨਚਖੈ।
ਮਾਤਾ ਪੁਤਰ ਨਾਲ ਪਿਆਰ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਸਵਾਦਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੱਖਦੀ (ਕਿ ਮੇਰਾ ਪੁਤਰ ਔਖਾ ਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਖ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਾ ਤੇ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ)।
As the mother shares not the pleasures of her son, the Guru also has no demand of the Sikh.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਪੁਰਖੁਦਇਆਲੁਹੈਗੁਰਸਿਖਪਰਖੈ।
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੁਰਖ (ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ) ਦਿਆਲ ਮੂਰਤੀ ਹਨ (ਹਾਂ) ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਸਿਖ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਖ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
The true Guru is kind and (sometime) tests also the Sikhs.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਲਖਮੁਲੀਅਨਿਕਖੈ।੧੩।
ਪੀਰ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਲਖਮੁਲੀ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਹੈ ('ਅਨ ਕਖੇਂ) ਹੋਰ (ਪ੍ਰੀਤਾਂ) ਕੱਖ ਦੇ ਸਮਾਨ (ਭਾਵ ਛੇਤੀ ਟੁੱਟ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ) ਹਨ।
The love between the Guru and the Sikh makes the latter valuable like a blade of grass made worthy of million (coins)
ਪਉੜੀ੧੪
ਦਰਸਨੁਦੇਖਿਪਤੰਗਜਿਉਜੋਤੀਜੋਤਿਸਮਾਵੈ।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ) ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਰੂਪ ਦਾ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਪਤੰਗ ਵਾਂਗ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਜੋਤ ਵਿਖੇ (ਸਿਖ) ਸਮਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਧਿਆਨ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਤਦਾਕਾਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Beholding the flame (of the lamp), as the moth mingles with the flame and
ਸਬਦਸੁਰਤਿਲਿਵਮਿਰਗਜਿਉਅਨਹਦਲਿਵਲਾਵੈ।
ਮਿਰਗ ਵਾਂਗ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਦੀ ਸੁਰਤ ਵਿਖੇ 'ਲਿਵ' ਸਮਾਧੀ ਲਾਕੇ ਇਕ ਰਸ ਬ੍ਰਿਤੀ ਜੋੜਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਨਿਵਾਤ ਦੀਪ ਵਤ ਚਿਤ ਸਥਿਰ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Deer absorbs its consciousness in the melodious Word, likewise in the river of holy congregation,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਵਿਚਿਮੀਨੁਹੋਇਗੁਰਮਤਿਸੁਖਪਾਵੈ।
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ (ਰੂਪੀ ਸਰੋਵਰ) ਵਿਖੇ ਮੱਛ ਵਤ ਮਗਨ ਹੋਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
The Sikh becoming fish and adopting the way of the wisdom of the Guru, enjoys the life.
ਚਰਣਕਵਲਵਿਚਿਭਵਰੁਹੋਇਸੁਖਰੈਣਿਵਿਹਾਵੈ।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ) ਚਰਣ ਕਵਲ ਵਿਖੇ ਚਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਭਵਰਾ ਬਣਾ ਕੇ ਸੁਖ ਨਾਲ (ਅਵਸਥਾ ਰੂਪੀ) ਰਾਤ ਕੱਟਦਾ ਹੈ।
By becoming black bee of the lotus feet (of the Lord), the Sikh spends his night ecstatically.
ਗੁਰਉਪਦੇਸਨਵਿਸਰੈਬਾਬੀਹਾਧਿਆਵੈ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ (ਅਰਥਾਤ ਨਾਮ ਤੇ ਬਾਣੀ) ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਸਰਦੀ, ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਵਤ ਧਿਆਉਂਦਾ (ਮੁਖੋਂ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਕਰਦਾ) ਹੈ।
He never forgets the teaching of the Guru and repeats it as the rainbird does in the rainy season.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਦੁਬਿਧਾਨਾਸੁਖਾਵੈ।੧੪।
ਮੁਰੀਦ ਲੋਕ ਪੀਰਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਵਿਖੇ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਦਾ ਖੁਰਾ ਖੋਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ।
The love between the Guru and the disciple is such that they do not like the sense of duality.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੫
ਦਾਤਾਓਹੁਨਮੰਗੀਐਫਿਰਿਮੰਗਣਿਜਾਈਐ।
ਉਸ ਦਾਤੇ ਕੋਲੋਂ ਨਾ ਮੰਗੀਏ ਜੋ 'ਫਿਰ' (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਅਗੇ) ਮੰਗਣ ਜਾਵੇ (ਜਿਹਾ ਕਿ) ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਪਿਆਸਾ ਹੀ ਮਰ ਜਾਵੇ, ਪਰੰਤੂ ਬੱਦਲ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਸ੍ਵਾਂਤਿ ਬੂੰਦ ਮੰਗਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Ask not for a giver from whom you shall have to appeal to another
ਹੋਛਾਸਾਹੁਨਕੀਚਈਫਿਰਿਪਛੋਤਾਈਐ।
ਥੋੜ੍ਹ ਦਿਲਾ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਨ ਬਣਾਈਏ (ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ) ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਪਛਤਾਉ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਥੋੜ੍ਹ ਦਿਲੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਉਗ੍ਰਾਹੀ ਵੇਲੇ ਪਤ ਉਤਾਰ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
Employ not a brusque banker who will afterwords make you repent.
ਸਾਹਿਬੁਓਹੁਨਸੇਵੀਐਜਮਡੰਡੁਸਹਾਈਐ।
ਉਸ ਮਾਲਕ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾ ਕਰੀਏ ਜਿਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਜਮ ਦਾ ਡੰਡਾ ਸਿਰ ਪੁਰ ਸਹਾਰਨਾ ਪਵੇ (ਜੋ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਾਵੇ ਤੇ ਖੋਟੇ ਕੰਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਨੌਕਰੀ ਲਵੇ)।
Serve not such a master as will render you liable to death's punishment.
ਹਉਮੈਰੋਗੁਨਕਟਈਓਹੁਵੈਦੁਨਲਾਈਐ।
ਉਹ ਹਕੀਮ ਨਾ ਲਾਈਏ ਜਿਹੜਾਂ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਰੋਗ ਨਾ ਦੂਰ ਕਰੇ।
Engage not a physician who cannot cure the malady of pride.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿਮੈਲੁਨਉਤਰੈਕਿਉਂਤੀਰਥਿਨਾਈਐ।
ਜੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਨਾ ਉਤਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਨ੍ਹਾਉਣਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਫਲ ਹੈ।
What is the use of bathing the body at the places of pilgrimages if the filth of evil inclinations is not cleansed.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਸੁਖਸਹਜਿਸਮਾਈਐ।੧੫।
ਪੀਰ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੀ (ਵਡਾ ਸਾਧਨ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਸਹਜ ਸੁਖ ਵਿਖੇ (ਭਾਵ ਅਚੁੱਤ ਸੁਖ ਵਿਖੇ) ਸਮਾ ਜਾਈਦਾ ਹੈ।
The love between the Guru and the disciples brings happiness and composure.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੬
ਮਾਲੁਮੁਲਕੁਚਤੁਰੰਗਦਲਦੁਨੀਆਪਤਿਸਾਹੀ।
ਦੌਲਤ ਮੁਲਖ ਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਦੀ ਸੈਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ (ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੀ) ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹਤ (ਕਰੇ)।
If being master of army having four divisions (elephant, chariot, horse and infantry), country and the wealth;
ਰਿਧਿਸਿਧਿਨਿਧਿਬਹੁਕਰਾਮਾਤਿਸਭਖਲਕਉਮਾਹੀ।
ਬਹੁਤੀਆਂ ਰਿਧਾਂ, ਸਿੱਧਾਂ, (ਨਵੇਂ) ਨਿੱਧਾਂ (ਘਰ ਵਿਖੇ ਹੋਣ) ਕਰਾਮਾਤ (ਜਾਣੇ), ਸਾਰੀ ਖਲਕਤ (ਉਸਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਕੇ) ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭੀ ਕਰੇ (ਜਾਂ ਖਿੜ ਜਾਵੇ)।
If having attraction for others due to possession of miracles through ridhis and siddhis;
ਚਿਰੁਜੀਵਣੁਬਹੁਹੰਢਣਾਗੁਣਗਿਆਨਉਗਾਹੀ।
ਚਿਰਜੀਵੀ ਹੋਕੇ ਵਡੀ ਉਮਰ ਭੋਗੇ ਅਥਵਾ ਗੁਣੀ, ਗਿਆਨੀ, ਉਸਦੀ ਸਾਖੀ ਭਰਨ (ਕਿ ਇਸ ਜਿਹਾ ਹੋਰ ਕੋਈ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਨਹੀਂ)।
If living a long life full of qualities and knowledge
ਹੋਰਸੁਕਿਸੈਨਜਾਣਈਚਿਤਿਬੇਪਰਵਾਹੀ।
ਹੋਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਨਾ ਜਾਣੇ ਅਰ ਚਿੱਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹੀ ਰੱਖੇ (ਐਸਾ ਮਨੌਂ ਅਲਗਰਜ਼ ਭੀ ਹੋਵੇ)।
And if being enough powerful to care for nobody is still engrossed in dilemma,
ਦਰਗਹਢੋਈਨਲਹੈਦੁਬਿਧਾਬਦਰਾਹੀ।
ਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿਖੇ ਢੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈ ਸਕੇਗਾ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਦੁਬਿਧਾ (ਦ੍ਵੈਤ ਵਿਖੇ ਪੈਕੇ) ਬਦਰਾਹੀ (ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ)।
He cannot have shelter in the court of Lord.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਪਰਵਾਣੁਸੁਘਾਹੀ।੧੬।
ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ (ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਹੋਕੇ) ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਰਖੇ (ਭਾਵੇਂ ਆਪ) 'ਘਾਹੀ' (ਹੋਵੇ, ਉਹ ਦਰਗਹ ਵਿਖੇ) ਪ੍ਰਮਾਣਿਕ ਹੋਊ।
Due to love for his Guru, even an ordinary grass cutter Sikh becomes acceptable.
ਪਉੜੀ੧੭
ਵਿਣੁਗੁਰੁਹੋਰੁਧਿਆਨੁਹੈਸਭਦੂਜਾਭਾਉ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਾਝ ਹੋਰ (ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ) ਦੇ ਧਿਆਨ (ਕਰਨ) ਵਿਖੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਹੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਹੋਰ ਸਾਰੇ ਧ੍ਯਾਨ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਅਤ੍ਰਿਕਤ ਥਾਈਂ ਲੈ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਗੁਰੂ ਧ੍ਯਾਨ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਵੱਲ ਲਿਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
The concentration except on Guru is all duality.
ਵਿਣੁਗੁਰਸਬਦਗਿਆਨੁਹੈਫਿਕਾਆਲਾਉ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਥੋਂ (ਬਾਹਰਾ ਜੋ) ਗਿਆਨ (ਕਰਦਾ) ਹੈ (ਉਹ) ਫਿੱਕਾ ਹੀ ਬਕਵਾਸ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਸਦਾ ਰਸ ਨਾਸ਼ੀ, ਇਸਦਾ ਆਤਮ ਰਸ ਅਵਿਨਾਸ਼ੀ ਹੈ)।
The knowledge except theknowledge of the Guru-word is a cry in vain.
ਵਿਣੁਗੁਰਚਰਣਾਂਪੂਜਣਾਸਭੁਕੂੜਾਸੁਆਉ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਥੋਂ ਬਾਝ (ਹੋਰ ਮੜ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਮਸਾਣਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਾਕੇ ਪੰਜ ਧੂਣੀਆਂ ਜਾਲ ਕਰ) ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਣੀਆਂ) ਸਭ ਝੂਠਾ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਯੋਜਨ (ਜਾਂ ਸਵਾਦ) ਹੈ (ਫਲ ਸਿੱਧੀ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਊ, “ਜੋ ਪਾਥਰ ਕੀ ਪਾਂਈ ਪਾਇ॥ ਤਿਸਕੀ ਘਾਲ ਅਜਾਂਈ ਜਾਇ”॥)
Worship except the Guru feet is all false and selfishness.
ਵਿਣੁਗੁਰਬਚਨੁਜੁਮੰਨਣਾਊਰਾਪਰਥਾਉ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਬਚਨ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡਕੇ ਹੋਰ (ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਜੰਤ੍ਰਾਂ ਦਾ) ਮੰਨਣਾ ਤੁੱਛ ਵਸੀਲਾ (ਅਥਵਾ ਕਾਰਣ) ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਯ ਵਧ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦੇ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ)।
Except the acceptance of the teaching of the Guru, all other means are incomplete.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿਵਿਣੁਸੰਗੁਹੈਸਭੁਕਚਾਚਾਉ।
ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੇ ਬਿਨਾ (ਜਿੰਨੀਆਂ) ਸੰਗਤਾਂ ਹਨ ਸਾਰੇ ਕੱਚੇ ਹੀ ਚਾਉ (ਹੁਲਾਸ) ਹਨ, (ਜਨਮ ਦੀ ਸਫਲਤਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਨ)।
Except the meeting in the holy congregation, all other assemblages are fragile.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਜਿਣਿਜਾਣਨਿਦਾਉ।੧੭।
(ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ) ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ (ਨੇ) ਪੀਰ ਗੁਰੂ (ਨਾਨਕ) ਨਾਲ ਪੱਕੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ ਓਹੀ ਦਾਊ ਦਾ ਜਿੱਤਣਾ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ (ਇਤਰ ਲੋਕ ਮਨੁਖ ਜਨਮ ਦੀ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰ ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The Sikhs loving their Guru, know well to win the game (of life).
ਪਉੜੀ੧੮
ਲਖਸਿਆਣਪਸੁਰਤਿਲਖਲਖਗੁਣਚਤੁਰਾਈ।
ਲਖ ਦਾਨਾਈਆਂ, ਲੱਖਾਂ (ਸੁਰਤੀ) ਗਿਆਤਾਂ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਗੁਣ ਤੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈਆਂ।
One may have millions of wisdoms, consciousness, qualities, meditations, honours, japs,
ਲਖਮਤਿਬੁਧਿਸੁਧਿਗਿਆਨਧਿਆਨਲਖਪਤਿਵਡਿਆਈ।
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਮੱਤਾਂ, ਬੁਧਾਂ, ਸੁਧਾਂ, ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ, ਇੱਜ਼ਤਾਂ ਅਰ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ।
Penances, continences, bathings on pilgrimage centres, karmas, dharmas yogas,
ਲਖਜਪਤਪਲਖਸੰਜਮਾਂਲਖਤੀਰਥਨ੍ਹਾਈ।
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਜਪ, ਤਪ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਸੰਜਮ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਤੀਰਥਾਂ ਦਾ ਅਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕਰਨਾਂ।
Enjoyments rind recitations of holy scriptures to his credit.
ਕਰਮਧਰਮਲਖਜੋਗਭੋਗਲਖਪਾਠਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ।
ਲੱਖਾਂ ਕਰਮ, ਧਰਮ, ਜੋਗ, ਭੋਗ, ਲੱਖਾਂ ਪਾਠਾਂ ਦਾ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ।
But still, if such a person controlled by ego wishes to be noticed by others,
ਆਪੁਗਣਾਇਵਿਗੁਚਣਾਓਹੁਥਾਇਨਪਾਈ।
(ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਣ ਨਾਲ) ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪ ਗਣਾਕੇ ਖਰਾਬ ਹੀ ਹੋਣਾਂ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਥਾਉਂ ਕੋਈ ਉਹ (ਕਰਮ) ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਦਾ।
He has gone astray and cannot fathom the Lord (and His creation).
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਹੋਇਆਪੁਗਵਾਈ।੧੮।
ਪੀਰ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਹੀ (ਪੂਰਣ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਦਾ ਸਾਧਨ ਹੈ ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਇਸ ਵਿਖੇ) ਆਪਾ ਭਾਵ ਗੁਆਚ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
If the love prevails between the Guru and the disciple, the sense of ego vanishes (in the thin air).
ਪਉੜੀ੧੯
ਪੈਰੀਪੈਪਾਖਾਕਹੋਇਛਡਿਮਣੀਮਨੂਰੀ।
(ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਦੇ) ਚਰਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਧੂੜ ਹੋਕੇ ਪੈਰੀ ਪੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਵਡਿਆਈ ਅਰ ਮਨੌਤਾਂ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਅਥਵਾ ਮਣੀ ਆਦਿ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ 'ਮਨੂਰੀ' ਲੋਹੇ ਦੀ ਮੈਲ ਵਾਂਙੂ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ)।
The Sikh of the Guru, falling at the feet (of Guru) forswears his ego and desires of mind.
ਪਾਣੀਪਖਾਪੀਹਣਾਨਿਤਕਰੈਮਜੂਰੀ।
ਪਾਣੀ (ਭਰਦੇ), ਪੱਖਾ (ਝੱਲਦੇ), (ਚੱਕੀ) ਪੀਹਣ (ਦੀ) ਮਜੂਰੀ ਨਿੱਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
He fetches water, fans the congregation, grinds flour (for latigar) and does all manual jobs.
ਤ੍ਰਪੜਝਾੜਿਵਿਛਾਇੰਦਾਚੁਲਿਝੋਕਿਨਝੂਰੀ।
ਤ੍ਰੱਪੜ ਝਾੜਕੇ (ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਤ ਦੇ ਜੋੜ ਮੇਲ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਵਿਛਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਜਦ ਉਥੋਂ ਵੇਹਲੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ਚੁਲ੍ਹੇ ਵਿਖੇ ਲੱਕੜੀਆਂ ਝੋਕਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਝੁਰਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ (ਭਾਵ ਰੰਜਸ਼ ਨਹੀਂ ਮੰਨਦੇ)।
He cleanses and spreads the sheets and gets not dejected while putting fire in the hearth.
ਮੁਰਦੇਵਾਂਗਿਮੁਰੀਦੁਹੋਇਕਰਿਸਿਦਕਸਬੂਰੀ।
ਮੁਰਦੇ ਵਾਂਙ ਮੁਰੀਦ (ਨਿਰਮਾਣ) ਹੋਕੇ ਸਿਦਕ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਬਰ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ।
He adopts the contentment like a dead person does.
ਚੰਦਨੁਹੋਵੈਸਿੰਮਲਹੁਫਲੁਵਾਸੁਹਜੂਰੀ।
ਸਿੰਮਲ (ਦੇ ਬੂਟੇ ਵਾਂਙ ਚੰਨਣ) ਹਜ਼ੂਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਚੰਦਨ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਰੂਪ ਹੋਕੇ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਤੱਦਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
He gets such a fruit of living near the Guru, as the silk-cotton tree gets by being near the sandal tree i.e. it also becomes fragrant.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਮਤਿਪੂਰੀ।੧੯।
ਜੋ ਮੁਰੀਦ ਪੀਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ (ਉਕਤ) ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ (ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ) ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੈ।
The Sikhs loving the Guru make their wisdom complete.
ਪਉੜੀ੨੦
ਗੁਰਸੇਵਾਦਾਫਲੁਘਣਾਕਿਨਿਕੀਮਤਿਹੋਈ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਸੇਵਾ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਸੇ ਪਾਸੋਂ ਕੀਮਤ ਪੈ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ? (ਭਾਵ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ)।
Immense is the fruit of the service to the Guru; who can understand its worth.
ਰੰਗੁਸੁਰੰਗੁਅਚਰਜੁਹੈਵੇਖਾਲੇਸੋਈ।
ਰੰਗਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਅਚਰਜ (ਸੇਵਾ ਦਾ) ਲਾਲ ਰੰਗ ਹੈ, ਉਹ (ਗੁਰੂ ਹੀ) ਦਿਖਾ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ (ਲਾਲ ਰੰਗ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਲਗਾ ਜਿਸਕੇ ਵਡਭਾਗਾ')।
From among the wondrous shades (of life) it makes one see the most wonderful one.
ਸਾਦੁਵਡਾਵਿਸਮਾਦੁਹੈਰਸੁਗੁੰਗੇਗੋਈ।
ਸ੍ਵਾਦਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਅਚਰਜ ਸ੍ਵਾਦ ਹੈ (ਪਰ) ਰਸ ਗੂੰਗੇ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਹੈ ('ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਗੂੰਗੇ ਗੁੜੁ ਖਾਇਆ ਪੂਛੇ ਤੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ॥' ਭਾਵ ਗੂੰਗਾ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਵਿਖੇ ਗੁਣਕਦਾ ਹੈ, ਵਰਣਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ)।
The taste of the service is as awesome as the sweet is to the dumb person.
ਉਤਭੁਜਵਾਸੁਨਿਵਾਸੁਹੈਕਰਿਚਲਤੁਸਮੋਈ।
ਉਤਭੁਜ (ਆਦਿ ਵਿਖੇ) ('ਵਾਸ') ਸਥਾਨਾ ਵਿਖੇ (ਆਤਮਾ ਦਾ) ਨਿਵਾਸ ਹੈ, (ਕਿੱਕੁਰ ਜਾਣੀਦਾ ਹੈ?) ਚਲਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ (ਆਪਣੀ ਚੇਤਨਾ ਸੱਤਾ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ) ਸਮਾਈ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਉਸ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਈਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, “ਜੋਤੀ ਹੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਪਦਾ” ਜਿੱਕੁਰ ਧੁੱਪ ਥੋਂ ਸੂਰਜ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਲਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਚੇਤਨ ਸਤਾ ਥੋਂ ਆਤਮਾਂ ਦਾ) (
It is a great feat (of God) that the fragrance is there in the trees.
ਤੋਲੁਅਤੋਲੁਅਮੋਲੁਹੈਜਰੈਅਜਰੁਕੋਈ।
ਤੋਲ ਥੋਂ ਅਤੋਲ ਅਰ ਅਮੋਲਕ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ) ਅਜਰ ਵਸਤੂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ (ਵਿਰਲਾ) ਜਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਇਹ ਗਿਆਨ ਕਿਸਨੂੰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ?)
The service is invaluable and incomparable; any rare endures this unendurable faculty.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਜਾਣੈਜਾਣੋਈ।੨੦।
ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੀਰਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ, ਓਹੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਹਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਦੇ ਹਨ।
Only God, the omniscient knows the mystery of the service.

ਚੰਨਣੁਹੋਵੈਚੰਨਣਹੁਕੋਚਲਿਤੁਨਜਾਣੈ।
ਚੰਦਨ ਥੋਂ ਚੰਦਨ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕੋਈ ਚਲਿੱਤ੍ਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦਾ (ਕਿ ਕਿੱਕੁਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ)
None knows the mystery how in the association of sandal, other trees transform into sandal.
ਦੀਵਾਬਲਦਾਦੀਵਿਅਹੁਂਸਮਸਰਿਪਰਵਾਣੈ।
ਦੀਵੇ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਦੀਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਉਸ ਦੇ) ਬਰਾਬਰ ਹੀ (ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਸਾਰੇ) ਪਰਵਾਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ।
From lamp is illumined the lamp and looks identical.
ਪਾਣੀਰਲਦਾਪਾਣੀਐਤਿਸੁਕੋਨਸਿਞਾਣੈ।
ਪਾਣੀ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਰਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਾਣਦਾ (ਕਿ ਨਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਤਲਾਉ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਕਿਹੜਾ ਹੈ?)
No one can identify that water which mixes into water.
ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗੀਹੋਵੈਕੀੜਿਅਹੁਕਿਵਆਖਿਵਖਾਣੈ।
(ਕੀੜਿਆਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹੀ ਭ੍ਰਿੰਗੀ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਕੇ) ਕੀੜਾ ਭਿ੍ਰੰਗੀ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿੱਕੁਰ ਕੋਈ ਕਹਿ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਈ ਇਹ ਕੀੜਾ ਹੈ)?
The small aunt turns into bhringiinsect; none can tell about it.
ਸਪੁਛੁਡੰਦਾਕੁੰਜਨੋਕਰਿਚੋਜਵਿਡਾਣੈ।
ਸੱਪ ਕੂੰਜ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਚਰਜ ਕੌਤਕ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਕੋਈ ਭੇਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਤਿਵੇਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ਵਾਂਸ਼ਨਾ ਛਡ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, “ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਜਨਮੇ ਗਵਨੁ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ। “)
The snake leaves its slough and this is again a wonderful feat.
ਪੀਰਮੁਰੀਦਾਂਪਿਰਹੜੀਹੈਰਾਣੁਹੈਰਾਣੈ।੨੧।
ਪੀਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਮੁਰੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਅਚਰਜ ਥੋਂ ਅਚਰਜ ਹੈ।
Similarly, the love between the Guru and disciple is wondrous.
ਪਉੜੀ੨੨
ਫੁਲੀਵਾਸੁਨਿਵਾਸੁਹੈਕਿਤੁਜੁਗਤਿਸਮਾਣੀ।
ਫਲਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਦਾ 'ਨਿਵਾਸ' (ਟਿਕਾਉ) ਹੈ (ਪਰੰਤੂ ਇਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣੀਦਾ ਭਈ) ਕਿਸ ਜੁਗਤੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੈ।
The fragrance resides in the flowers but none knows how it takes place there.
ਫਲਾਂਅੰਦਰਿਜਿਉਸਾਦੁਬਹੁਸਿੰਜੇਇਕਪਾਣੀ।
ਫਲਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਸਵਾਲ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਵੱਖੋ ਵੱਖਰੇ ਹਨ, ਪਾਣੀ ਇਕੋ ਸਿੰਜਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਏਹ ਕੌਤਕ ਕਿਉਂ ਹੈ? ਅਚਰਜ ਹੈ)।
Tastes of the fruits are varied, though the same water irrigates them.
ਘਿਉਦੁਧੁਵਿਚਿਵਖਾਣੀਐਕੋਮਰਮੁਨਜਾਣੀ।
ਦੁਧ ਵਿਖੇ ਘਿਉ (ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ) ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਪਰੰਤੂ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ 'ਮਰਮ') ਭੇਦ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ।
Butter remains in the milk but none understands this mystery.
ਜਿਉਬੈਸੰਤਰੁਕਾਠਵਿਚਿਓਹੁਅਲਖਵਿਡਾਣੀ।
ਲੱਕੜੀ ਵਿਖੇ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਅੱਗ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਓਹ ਨਾ ਦੇਖਣ ਦਾ ਅਚਰਜ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ ਦਿੱਸਣ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦੀ) (ਉਕਤ ਵਸਤਾਂ ਦਾ ਮਰਮ ਕਿੱਕੁਰ ਜਾਪਦਾ ਹੈ? ਪੰਜਵੀਂ ਤੁਕ ਵਿਖੇ ਉੱਤਰ ਦੇਂਦੇ ਹਨ)।
In the gurmukhs, due to their discipline the realization of authentic self takes place.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੰਜਮਿਨਿਕਲੈਪਰਗਟੁਪਰਵਾਣੀ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਨਾਲ (ਜੁਗਤ ਨਾਲ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾਦਿ ਉਕਤ ਵਸਤਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਸੁਧ ਆਤਮ ਵਸਤੂ) ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ, (ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਰੇ) ਪਰਵਾਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ। (ਗੱਲ ਕੀ ਜਿੱਕੁਰ ਫੁਲਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਰਸ ਲੱਕੜਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਅਗਨੀ ਸੰਜਮ ਨਾਲ ਲੋਕ ਕੱਢਦੇ ਹਨ, ਤਿਹਾ ਹੀ ਜਗ੍ਯਾਸੂ ਲੋਕ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਕੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਸੰਜਮ ਨਾਲ ਆਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ, ਜ
For this all, the gurmukh applies the method of love for Guru,

ਦ੍ਰਵੇ ਉਤੇ ਪਤੰਗਾਂ ਦੀ 'ਵੰਸ਼' (ਉਲਾਦ) ਸੜ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਰਦਾ) ਦੇਖਕੇ ਬੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਟਦੀ।
Seeing the burning flame of the lamp the moths cannot withhold themselves.
ਜਲਵਿਚਹੁਫੜਿਕਢੀਐਮਛਨੇਹੁਨਘਟੈ।
ਮੱਛ ਨੂੰ ਫੜਕੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੱਢ ਸਿੱਟੀਏ ਤਾਂ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ
The fish is taken out of water but still it does not give up its love for water.
ਘੰਡਾਹੇੜੈਮਿਰਗਜਿਉਸੁਣਿਨਾਦਪਲਟੈ।
ਮਿਰਗ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਘੰਡੇਹੇੜੇ ਦਾ ਨਾਦ (ਲੱਟੂ ਹੋਕੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਪਰ) ਲੇਟਦਾ ਸੁਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਫੜ ਲਓ ਪਰ ਮਸਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਛੱਡਦਾ)।
As listening to the drum beat of the hunter, the deer turns towards the sound,
ਭਵਰੈਵਾਸੁਵਿਣਾਸੁਹੈਫੜਿਕਵਲੁਸੰਘਟੈ।
ਭਵਰ ਦਾ ਕਮਲ ਦੀ ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਵਿਖੇ ਵਿਣਾਸ ਬੀ ਹੋਵੇ (ਭਾਵ ਮੁੰਦਿਆ ਬੀ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਦ ਬੀ) ਫੜਕੇ (ਕਵਲ) ਸੁੰਘਦਾ ਹੈ (ਅਥਵਾ ਘੁਟਕੇ ਜੱਫੀ ਪਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਿਛੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਟਦਾ)।
And the black bee by entering the flower perishes itself for enjoying the fragrance.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿਸੁਖਫਲੁਪਿਰਮਰਸੁਬਹੁਬੰਧਨਕਟੈ।
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਸ ਸੁਖ ਰੂਪ ਫਲ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਬਾਹਲੇ (ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣਾਦਿ) ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਟ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, (ਅਥਵਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਰਮ ਰਸ ਲਈ ਅਨੇਕ ਬੰਧਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਝੱਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ)।
Similarly, the gurmukhs enjoy the delight of love and liberate themselves from all the bondages.
ਧੰਨੁਧੰਨੁਗੁਰਸਿੱਖਵੰਸੁਹੈਧੰਨੁਗੁਰਮਤਿਨਿਧਿਖਟੈ।੨੩।੨੭।ਸਤਾਈ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਸਿਖ ਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਵੰਸ ਧੰਨ ਅਤੇ ਧੰਨ ਹੈ (ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ) ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮਤ (ਸਿਖ੍ਯਾ) ਗ੍ਰਹਣ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਆਤਮ ਨਿਧੀ ਦਾ ਧਨ ਖੱਟਦੇ ਹਨ (ਹੋਰ ਧਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅੱਗ, ਚੋਰ, ਰਾਜਾ ਦਾ ਡਰ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਇਹ ਧਨ ਨਿਰਭਯ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਣ ਅਰ ਅੰਤ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਲ ਦਾ ਸਾਥੀ ਹੈ)।
